This is all going a bit off topic but the examples you've listed an individual would have agency. At the football, I'm a fan wanting my team to win every game but knowing they won't.With respect, that is just an opinion. Those who work in highly competitive industries would get eaten for breakfast if we had anything other than that opinion. The long term impact of winning over coming 2nd, is the difference between getting paid and going out of business.
Whilst I appreciate that everybody reacts differently to different types of encouragement / motivation, I think that the last place you would want to foster a safe, comfortable environment is a professional changing room - this is what creates a mentality of going through the motions.
I broadly carry this approach through life and try (mostly) my hardest to improve & succeed but I am aware that sometimes that won't be enough. I don't think that thinking of myself or anyone else as a loser is a healthy reaction in that outcome.
To try to bring it back on topic: no one can win all the time, certainly not a single football team. Even Man City have lost their last 4 games. I think some people here need to realise that it is precisely BECAUSE the other team is trying to beat us that we can't win them all. Whether they were a pub team or not.
