Post-Match Thread and Ratings Tamworth 1-1 Southend United

Just woken up and reading all the comments from today (yesterday for me) I am glad I never stayed up to stream the game now
Sounds like we really must do better

Is this post for real?

Southend shouldn't expect to beat a part time team?

Full time Southend united shouldn't expect to beat a team who only train a couple of times a week?

Southend shouldn't expect to beat a team 15th in the National League?

Southend, with their high 6000 attendees and probable (conservative) 5 times larger budget shouldn't expect to beat Tamworth?

Southend shouldn't expect to beat a team that included someone who sells zips for a living?

**** me. The acceptance of mediocrity is astounding.

If I performed like this in my day job, I'd rightly be on a performance review.

I don't expect to win every game, nor finish in the playoffs. I do expect us to beat part part timers.

Something we failed to do twice this month.

Apathy reigns supreme.
It's not apathy it's just a statement of fact. What has the size of the crowd got to do with it? So they're 15th. Which league position is it acceptable to draw 10th???

Awful pitch, awful game, poor performance, poor result although a draw about right. Away terrace was actually better than I expected although couldn’t see the bottom third of the goal so never saw the Gus shot go in. First half as poor as we’ve been in a long time. The midfield three struggled with Morton who I love as a player having an off day. Leon had one decent run and shot but otherwise we created little. Tamworth played the way they always do I guess. On that pitch it’s hard to play football but they are a big physical side and played that way. The front two offered little and the defence struggled. The line up suggested we were more worried about their long throw ins than attacking ourselves. Second half we were better and more on the front foot and scored a decent equaliser and for a few minutes looked dangerous. We had a few chances but so did they. A draw was the right result. Tamworth have lost 4 at home, Barnet, Halifax, Alty and Hartlepool and you can see why. Once again the travelling shrimpers did the club proud with 709 in a crowd of 1631. Decent noise. MOM for me was Hayes who commanded his area well and made a couple of decent saves, can’t think of anyone else who did well. Maybe Leon, Golding and Goodliffe. Missing Yeovil next week due to a wedding and can’t say I’m gutted at the moment. Results went our way which makes this point and the defeat to Maidenhead who lost at home to Yeovil today more frustrating.

We were oktoday, but lacked incisiveness up front. I just hate plastic pitches! It stifled any creativity we might have had (not that there was much non show). A few players were a bit anonymous today (especially in the midfield). We were clearly the better side. Their goal was lucky – dodgy deflection – fortuitous fall. GSM did what he does – great finish, but his positional play was superb. Great turnout as usual 700+ is a decent show. Truth is, it was all a bit average

Hayes 7 –assured throughout – odd dodgy kick, but I have confidence with him in goal

GSM 7 – Good engine, great positioning such a lust for goal

Taylor 6 – Defended well, could have linked play better

Ralph 6 – as above

Goodliffe 7 – Great performance – committed, got his head on the ball or body in the way of various tonks rockets.

Husin 5 – pretty anonymous, without doing loads wrong

Morton 4 – Weirdly poor – crosses kept hitting first man

Golding 6 – a menace around the box and put himself about

Bonne 5 – no lack of effort, complete lack of product

Hopper 3- very poor

LCP 6 – floated in and out of the game but always looked a threat when he ran at defenders

Subs – Coker 5, Waldron 5, Kendall 5 – all sound but unspectacular

Bonne 5? Didn’t he get an assist? From what I heard on the radio he won loads in the air and also put it on a plate for Gus who put it over?

Sorry if you were there and saw it in the flesh

So slow at the start and very poor in first half basic passes being misplaced looked of the pace for sure .

2nd half we upped the tempo on and of the ball Gus steady strike got us a share of the points which I thought was fair result in the end .

Bonne missed a decent header I just wished we tested there gk more often but at the end of the day a point away from home isn’t to shabby just need to start winning these types of game if want to push on for the future for sure .

I thought Tamworth played the game plan well ie long ball pumped forward and fighting for it in the end .

and a new ground ticked off which is a nice bonus .

Maybe a 6 for getting the assist. Otherwise I thought he was poor. He seems to do ok when he comes on as a sub but struggles when he starts. Thought Hopper won more in the air but overall we were poor as an attacking force and that not entirely their fault. As a side as a whole we struggled going forward another than a few odd moments. I would add the pitch was dreadful though which didn’t help

Bonne won few in the air but did assist the goal. He and Hopper didn't work well together. Bonne and Walker seem a more effective strike partnership.

Fair. We lost against part time Maidenhead (twice), and drew against part time Tamworth today. I could maybe accept one poor result against part timers on the law of averages, but if you want to challenge for the play offs, surely we need to win most of these games.

Tamworth seem to have gained an inflated status thanks to the Spurs result, but let’s be honest, they’re **** poor, relying solely on set pieces for any attacking threat. If we can’t beat them, then I worry any playoff push will fizzle out.

What has the size of the crowd got to do with it?
In today's lesson of basic common sense, point one.

The size of the crowd particularly in non league directly correlates with the size of a teams budget.

More people through the door equals more revenue from ticket sales, food and drink and merchandise.

This ultimately equals in the ability to pay more for players and staff.

The better your players and staff, the better results should be.

Given our crowd and therefore revenue is so high in comparison with Tamworth's, we shouldn't be in a position of saying drawing one all with Tamworth is a good result.

Id argue they didn't have a player earning more than any one player in our team today.

So they're 15th. Which league position is it acceptable to draw 10th???

15th position indicates that Tamworth are in the bottom 40 percent of teams in this division. Add in that they are part time, there is no justification for saying that one all is a good result.

I wouldn't care if they were top. A professional full time team should beat a part time one.

If you recall, we couldn't ****ing score against Sittingbourne 20 odd days ago.

If you think losing to Sittingbourne and drawing with Tamworth in the same month is in anyway positive more power to you.

I don't. I think we deserve better.

A 6 would be fairer - maybe I'm harsh saying 5 as there was no shortage of industry, but it was not a good performance.

Would like to to think we'll move on from him in the summer. Will be better options out there. Just never really shown enough for me. View from the standing area was dreadful
