Post-Match Thread and Ratings Tamworth 1-1 Southend United

So a few weeks out for Parillon it seems.
I guess its the usual wait and see. Pennyfather said he was waving at the bench trying to get their attention. Then said it looks like it could be a groin , then corrected that to say it looks like a hamstring

Hopefully whichever it is the lads made a precautionary call, so with luck , a slight event

They were happy with the draw (keeper going down when they were under pressure - substituted players pulling out to the far side, before their number went up etc). That said, in the first half in particular, they looked sharper than us, and a tad hungrier.
Fortunately they lacked quality, and we got our act together after the break.
Our central defence now look rock solid but again we hardly troubled their keeper.
What got me was how rudderless we were. Ralph is not a captain (and was insipid today). In the days of say Timlin and Cox we would be bending the refs Earole at every contentious decision, the oppo did so (incessantly) but we were meek in comparison. Makes a difference in tight games.
Our fans were also strangely subdued today, not sure if it was because of the strung out layout of the away end, the realisation that this is it for some time yet, or maybe too many punchy beers in their super hostelries (that was my excuse anyway).

People have a dig about new signings being on the bench for the first few games but this is exactly why. I don’t get why LCP has started, nor why Bridge hasn’t started .. Ralph has never really impressed as a LWB. I haven’t seen Kev’s post match interview but .. I don’t get these kind of things tbh. I know he wants to use the squad but … I’d love to know the logic.

In today's lesson of basic common sense, point one.

The size of the crowd particularly in non league directly correlates with the size of a teams budget.
Your patronising lesson in common sense lacks... guess what.... and falls apart on the very first point.

If that were the case, how do Forest Green, Barnet and Gateshead (plus others) have very decent budgets?

At our level, it's often about being bankrolled by very wealthy owners (like FGR), or bankrolled plus some great deals on transfers with sell-ons paying dividends (eg. Barnet).

There is also the fact that we're still mending a club left in financial ruin, it's infrastructure and dilapidated stadium after years and years of neglect with an eye on improving that stadium with costly redevelopment on the horizon.

We clearly don’t have the strength , certainly upfront, to consistently overwhelm teams
Our 5 strikers have possibly the worst record in the league, with just one of them to score every 13 games
Hardly promotion material

You’ve concluded that we need to get better players to beat part time Tamworth? As other have said, it’s likely that all our players earn more than any of theirs, and that nearly all of our players would get in their team? At what point do we expect more from the players and management team we have already. Roy Keane would say ‘do your job’.

I disagree it is only one side of the equation. The important factor is how much cash is left after income minus expenditure. Southend are not making money. If crowd size (or income) was the only factor football would be very boring. Although we would beat Col U every time.

The team budget helps obtain better players but it takes time to build a "better" team. Even then there are no guarantees.
