Great write up by Mr Ardley on his squad

I also thought Ardley came over really well in defeat yesterday. I think Moors have a good proven manager there and they are a well funded club, so if they sort their ground issues out, I would expect them to be in and around the play offs again next season.

Take 4 points off of them and I will be happy and I also think it would be a sign of progress for us.

Age is just a number. Stockport won promotion with a 32 year old striker and Grimsby with a 33 (recently turned 34) year old striker. The difference between them and us is that those players brought more to the team in terms of other qualities and they didn't have injury/fitness problems. Add to that they built a team around them that made up for their limitations. Grimsby had Sousa, McAtee and Maguire-Drew to do the running and set up the chances for Ryan Taylor to be that "fox in the box". Meanwhile, we had Dunne and Ogogo paired in midfield, which just emphasised both their limitations.

Don't know out of those players leaving Solihull could be the one we are interested in. Callum Rilley maybe?
Didn't play much this season.

Sbarra, unsurprisingly has had his contract extended via an option and probably will be off to a league club for a decent fee. Two that have their contract expiring are Osborne and Hudlin, but probably unrealistic.

A slightly interesting one is Lois Maynard, on loan from Stockport this season and played CM and CB. Plenty of experience at this level and League 2. However, at 33 and missing a few games at the end of the season due to niggling injuries, I'd expect we won't be looking at him.

I thought Maycock, their CM, had a contract expiring this summer but seems like he is under contract for next season. He has been pretty useful for them this season.

Blimey some of the comments are getting really boring now. Some fans writing us off signing any players over the age of about 27 just because recent signings have all been early 20s. Look at Peter Clarke 40 years old, most minutes played last season, smashing it. Age is just a number and we will need a few older heads in the team if we want to do well. We won’t win anything simply signing young players from lower leagues and if you think any different then you need to give your heads a wobble. I’d ideally like an average age squad around 26 but with a decent mixture of players with good potential and sell on potential along with some decent experience too. Look at most the top teams - Wrexham had strikers with league experience, Stockport had madden. We have Dalby and as good as his hold up play is could you imagine if we had someone like Michael Cheek to play off of him. Surely no one could turn their nose up at him but quite a few on here wouldn’t entertain it because he isn’t 22 years old.

I agree in the main, certainly need a few wise heads and experience, Promoted Grimsby had two in their starting line up, A thirty and 31 year old, added that balance to the nine under 28s

We of course already benefit ,depending on your opinion with 3 ,older pros, having Murphy, Arnold and Demetriou, bags of experience there, from front to back

Of our current 16 you may be pleased to know we average out to 24.9375. on the squad age front ,or we could call it 25, not far off your preferred plan

Unfortunately, although a very polite and extremely pleasant sentiment that I try to live up to when I can walk without pain, I am sorry to say age actually just isnt a number, although I get why people say it and the wisdom behind it, but for the vast majority of professional footballers, there is a window of peak performance. This is also clearly a strong belief held by the 3 Amigos and our recruitment team as stated by Kev himself who are seeking this nirvana, let alone the Business model aimed at benefitting from the odd Gem or two to develop and sell on from amongst the youngsters from the lower leagues ( 6 signed so far )

Im delighted we are moving at last in the right direction and not setting off with 8 over 30s as under the Brown era, as physical decline for other than Superman sets in as one gets older

One can of course always find the rare exception to the rule like the amazing Peter Clarke, but science and medical research affirms that by far the majority of older professional footballers lose pace, the body starts to breakdown, it takes longer to recover from injuries, hamstrings become more of a problem,, muscles and connecting tissues such as tendons to bone also lose their elasticity

We had too many older players and some not fit enough in first 3 months of the season, against an young and athletic side in NL, the results showed up.

Kev's biggest issue when he came in was that the squad balance wasn't right. There weren't enough players of peak age. We're clearly intent on rectifying that, but I certainly don't think he'll turn his nose up at a player of quality just because they are north of 30 years old.

As others have said, it wasn't the age of the players that was necessarily the issue, it was that they weren't the type of older players that could play 40 games a season. Plenty can.

Age is so much more than a number---I know so much more about life as a mature man than I ever did as a teenager.
