Student Protests - November 2011

No, but I could research it if I could be arsed. :raspberry:

Alternatively we could ask someone who hasnt got anything to do to find out for us so we can continue the discussion in style and armed with facts.
Over to you Osy.

Lol most kind , though on matters of pure fiscal research i will defer to C or teh other merry band of people who know where the bodies are buried ;)

On the street you don't need a degree to be a mother****ing hustler.

Word.

I went to university. But I'm also starting up my own business. So I can see the best of both worlds.

Sadly, I don't believe that the State is best at deciding where/when/how to allocate resources. Let the market decide.

Yes because that's doing SO well isn't it? Or is that a massive world-wide recession I see around the corner?

It's not a pure market though is it? China, Russia, still controlled by State, and in a global economy that has an impact. Italy, is controlled by a man who makes Murdoch look small-time.

There is no pure market . Monopolies exisit in public (countries want to control their asset's and resources ) and private . The illusion is they are some how using different resources , and the effects of their actions only affect their respective sectors .
This is a main contributor to what has happened .

I agree. Which is why we should abandon all state control.

I paid £16k for a degree that isn't worth the paper that its printed on but at least when I left university in 2002 I got a job and have been lucky enough thus far to never have to face unemployment.

These 'pampered little tossers' have no choice other than to go to university because there are no jobs, will pay £30k for their worthless degree and then many of them still won't be able to get work.

I'd say they have plenty to protest against.

Let the market decide.

I usually agree with this approach, but what about when the market makes irrational decisions like applelover's decision to pay £16k for a degree that isn't worth the paper it is printed on?

The biggest issue for students is the exploitation of unpaid internships.

I don't mean the odd week here and there, but those lasting over a couple of months where employers exploit students that actually try hard to make a success of themselves.

so if its not a pure market, best not let the market decide. Governments are expected to invest for our collective long term benefit, markets are looking for profit and if that can be achieved in the short term then so be it.

completely agree with this. A company that I worked for recently slashed the staff in the department I worked in from 7 to 2 members of staff and told me I could recruit as many interns as I wanted - at £50 a week wages each. At the same time they launched their new cruise ship which cost $1 billion to build. Youth unemployment is highest out of any age group, if you go to uni you will be hit with £30k of fees on top of living expenses, your other choice is to accept working as an intern which is effectively working for free, or hunting down an apprentiship which is an idea that has re-emerged but I don't think is much more than just an idea. Rents are rocketing and if you want to buy your own home you need £30k deposit. Unless you have rich parents it seems the youth are being priced out of all their options. If I was 20 years younger I don't think I'd walk the streets protesting at uni fees I think I'd just walk off a tall building.
