What was Steve Tilson's great achievement at Southend United?

I did think that at first however bottom of L2 to the championship isnt bad, in not too many seasons.

Tilson is an emotive subject and it's all about opinions.
Whilst I don't subscribe to the fact that he was successful only because he had a young , fit , hungry , talented Eastwood , because to manage at this level requires much more than having one top player , I am of the opinion that his abilities were not at the level some have built up in their minds.
People inside the game tend to know more about a person , so thought he would have been given a chance somewhere higher than Canvey if he were thought worthy of the chance.

''After the port v game on Saturday I was listening to bbc Essex and Tilly came on the show talking about the game at Canvey. I found it incredibly sad that our ex, very loyal, talented manager is managing at this level... Why do you think he hasn't managed to get back into the football league. It wasn't that long ago that he was tipped to go to Norwich.

Crazy

I said the same to the better half driving to the Pub ... He was up for the Naawich Job when Paul Lambert was offered it

Like Steve, but maybe he is truely as a player and manager a one Club Man :-) not even setting the world alight at lowly Canvey

I think he was long out of the frame when Lambert was appointed, we were on the slippery slope by 2009, I thought he was linked around 2006 / 7 season when Worthington was dismissed

Steve Tilson performed miracles at this club,He imo did 3 things wrong which explains his current situation.

1/Remained here too long
2/Should of took the Norwich job if it was offered
3/Taking the Lincoln job

He also misplaced a pass against Northampton in 1989. I've never forgiven him for that

The point is that he clearly is / was not ever rated outside of Roots Hall. People that say he was up for this job and up for that job are clearly wishful thinking. There was never ever any proof that Norwich were after him. So many managers of a similar age have gone on to manage bigger and better clubs yet ST has been left managing Canvey. Unfortunately after all the glory years there were also some very poor seasons with both us and Lincoln. Yes he worked under difficult conditions here, but a certain Mr PS is working under much harder conditions now...he is the true miracle worker. I have to admit that i really laughed at his interview on Saturday, it was like listening to virtually every interview after our games, same old rubbish about unlucky, boys did well, battled hard etc. At least now under PS he sees it how many of us do and lets you know when he feels we have under performed etc

Errr because during his time as a manager he has two promotions and three relegation's including taking one team out of league football! Couple that with a personality like dishwater I don't feel many other clubs would have been that inspired - don't forget he had history at Southend before hand that gave him that chance

I agree with you totally , but would add that having such a personality hasn't held every Manager bac.
In fact , some have thrived on it !

Who gives a frig about his personality? He got us two promotions, two trips to Cardiff, a win against Man Utd. Club legend always and forever, and those who say differently have VERY short memories.

Its not about short memories. ST gave us some of the best years seen at Roots Hall, but so did David Webb, for a short time Barry Fry and what PS is doing now is fantastic when you look at the circumstances. But unfortunately the footballing world will probably look at the last few years of ST at Southend and Lincoln and judge him on this not the success prior. As for his personaility it doesnt bother me, PS hasnt got a great personality, however, ST used to drive me mad with the after match interviews and i rarely ever agreed with him, the boys did well, battled hard, unlucky etc. At least PS says it as it is.

At least I could understand the words that came out of Tilsons mouth in the post match interviews. Even with the "you know"s, was still more coherent than Slurrock

Personality is important because Tilly once played in goal for us and being a good keeper is all about interacting with the fans.

One Cameron Belford!

I couldn't care less what they say.

I just want the football club to succeed.

.

Agreed, but I often wonder how much some of our players understand when he's talking tactics.....Maybe that's why he had Blair come over for the first two years.....Primarily for translation purposes.

I would have expected most clubs to be aware that the Lincoln debacle was mainly the result of Chris Sutton spending all the money poorly & then walking out. Tilly should not have taken the job there. I believe he will return to league management and will get back via a coaching role; older and wiser.

People moan about Tilly's interviews but Sturrock is soporific.

Anyway can't believe we are going over all this again!

So we're back to mocking the symptoms of Sturrock's Parkinson's are we? Classy.

Actually I hadn't considered that it was a symptom of his disease until you just said it, so no I wasn't mocking his condition.

The fact does remains that some of his team talks must get a little "lost in translation" with the players.

To effing true, the way some of our fans talk about ex players / managers who have done more for this club than most is disgusting and properly disrespectful.

That maybe the case however, I witnessed some of the best and exciting football home and away since the early 70's
Two Trips to Cardiff, Chelsea, two trips to the Lane, man U and finally Swansea away. Don't remember better days than those
