Pre-Match Thread Southend Utd v Ipswich Town Saturday 3.00pm. 26.Oct 2019

What's your starting 11 and result prediction for Saturday?

Nope, no to wing backs - Elvis gets horrible exposed when he plays in this position. Sol wants to keep it simple, the best way to do that is to go 4-4-2. Goodship and Hutchinson can play out wide.

Under normal circumstances i'd agree on a 4-4-2 but Goodship isn't a winger and don't think it's Hutchinson's best position either, would prefer him more central. Elvis & Ralph are better going forward than defending and with Macca out think wing backs is our best option tomorrow

To go 352 we would need Lennon I think- and he is suspended. Shaunessy/Milligan/Kiernan there would leave us exposed defensively down that flank. Sol I think very much sets his teams up 422 so dont see that changing- certainly not for tomorrow

422 is what we ended up playing on Tuesday night! Hope Sol's not planning on two sent off again!

If we go 422 we will get battered

Sol will set up with 5 3 2 for sure.

Demi is still a right footed right back playing left midfield!!! That’s square in round enough for me!!

Hutchinson came to the club as a second striker / attacking CM....he did an interview saying he also played left wing for BHA as a scholar...and we can’t work out why his defending is suspect at right midfield in league 1 ??
Well, mock me all you like but the fact is Demi has plenty of experience at this level playing as a first choice left sided midfielder so I still fail to see why he wouldn't be a valid option.

I've seen your proposed team and while I think it looks decent on paper, we always seem to struggle playing 3-5-2; it's a system that needs a lot of work on the training ground because players need to be comfortable in more areas on the pitch than they would in a 4-4-2; for example defenders need to be creative coming out from the back, midfielders need to know what shape they are playing, what movement they should be making and who they need to pick up defensively, and forwards have extra defensive duties to stop the spare men - the full-backs (if playing against a 4-4-2) - from bombing forward and creating two-on-ones with the wing-backs.

When Glenn Hoddle was England manager he said he needed to split the strikers in order to prevent an easy pass to the opposition full-back; that's why you sometimes see forwards in wider positions in a 3-5-2 than you would in a 4-4-2.

And equally, does Ralph have experience playing as a wing-back? Again, it looks logical on paper but left-back and left wing-back are not quite as similar as people might think. I've played in both positions and the responsibilities are quite different: as a left-back you tuck in as part of a four that have to work together - it's all part of team work - and when going forward there's a player ahead of you and you can develop a partnership. But as a wing-back you are much wider and more isolated. You can spend a whole game just running up and down like a sub warming up. It's quite a lonely position.

If only football was played on paper. Sigh.

I wasn’t mocking anyone. I was simply saying regardless of previous experience in a position, a right footed right back at left midfield is far from a round peg in a round hole!

If transfermarkt is to believed Sol, after having all pre-season to work on shape, had Macclesfield start the season with wingbacks for all three matches.

They also played with wing-backs for 9 of their last 10 matches last season.

With McLaughlin banned and Ndukwu probably still injured, we may.have to go with Elvis and Ralph as wing backs and 3 centre backs?

It's a shame that there will be no walk ups tomorrow. Would of added a decent amount.

Yes- but of Ipswich supporters in our stands potentially (guessing thats why? Is away end sold out?)

At the mo appears to be about 6100 home tickets sold, comps/boxes etc normally adds is it 300? If 2400 away then we would be pushing the 9k

I said on another thread that people shouldn’t write off Ridgewell yet as it was too early to judge and he could turn out as a good signing, however he has had 10 votes to start so far. Has he played any u23 or other football recently? Otherwise that feels like a real roll of the dice.

He may do, but as a manager his preferred set up is 442. Why are you so sure he’ll play 532?

This for starters :-

If transfermarkt is to believed Sol, after having all pre-season to work on shape, had Macclesfield start the season with wingbacks for all three matches.

They also played with wing-backs for 9 of their last 10 matches last season.

What makes you so certain his preferred line up is 442?

Oliver Norwood :-)

As some of you have said, you might be playing Ipswich at the right time as they have lost their last two games after a great start. But don't be fooled, with Kayden Jackson and Oliver Norwood up front they have two very decent forwards who will give your back line a hard time. Watch out for our ex player Kane Vincent Young, who is definitely one who could go further in his career, quick powerful and a real handful. On the other defensive flank from Kane they may well play Luke Garbutt, another of our ex players on loan from Everton, he is a very decent player too.

You think Macca has been playing so well Sol will change his preferred tactic to accommodate him?
I think we are very light of experienced midfielders and that on Tuesday Macca covered a lot of ground and showed he had spirit and fight. If he isn't available then options are very limited, especially on the flanks.

See your point, but in all honesty I think Sol will make all of his own choices from the evidence of his own eyes on the training pitch and the conversations he’s had. Who knows what the lineup will be tomorrow? Will be interesting that’s for sure!
