Pre-Match Thread Southend Utd v Ipswich Town Saturday 3.00pm. 26.Oct 2019

What's your starting 11 and result prediction for Saturday?

As some of you have said, you might be playing Ipswich at the right time as they have lost their last two games after a great start. But don't be fooled, with Kayden Jackson and Oliver Norwood up front they have two very decent forwards who will give your back line a hard time. Watch out for our ex player Kane Vincent Young, who is definitely one who could go further in his career, quick powerful and a real handful. On the other defensive flank from Kane they may well play Luke Garbutt, another of our ex players on loan from Everton, he is a very decent player too.

Whoever SC selects, can't expect to see any miracles happening overnight (though not averse to it occurring of course) but anticipating a few bumps along the way, even into the New Year. Working on morale, fitness etc. and of course sorting the wheat from the chaff's not an overnight job. Be fantastic if they could get three points though, that'd be such a fillip to everyone.

I'd be interested to hear why you think Milligan deserves to keep his place, and also what role Cox would be expected to perform in your line up.

Milligan doesn’t deserve to keep his place, but I have no faith in Lennon doing a better job. Unfortunately until White is back we have to make do.

And if you watched on Friday nights game vs Tranmere, Cox was dropping deeper with Hopper basically up top on his own causing them problems and it worked. So id go with that again.

I don’t think there’s any other option other than to go with 3-5-2

As much as I rate Bishop, any young goalkeeper taking a hiding like that needs to just be left out the spotlight to regroup so Oxley back in goal for me.

Three centre backs almost pick themselves but I’m going with Milligan in there centrally with Shaughnessy and Lennon either side which gives me Kiernan in centre midfield.

Elvis and Ralph as out only wide players....although I’d have been tempted to play this formation with Macca as the wing back had he been available.

As said Kiernan will sit deeper in CM behind Dieng and Hutchinson.

I actually think Cox has been a million times better last game or two but I think he’s carry injuries and a week off may not do him any harm so I’m going to start with Hopper and Humphrys up front.

So on paper it looks like :-

EDITED DUE TO LENNON SUSPENDED

Oxley.

Shaughnessy. Milligan. KIERNAN.

Elvis. HUTCHINSON. DIENG. Ralph.

COX.
Hopper. Humphrys.

Bench :-

Bishop
Acquah
Goodship
Demetriou
Taylor
Rush
Egbri

In the recent past I have spoke with Kiernon, and he seems a level headed and determined bloke, why/if did he throw his teddy? Was he unhappy with the clubs direction under KB and Waddock? If so could he be Sol's first piece of positive man managing?
I understand the idea of 3 CBs playing BUT as they haven't played that way successfully before how will it work? And how will we play wingbacks without seemingly having anyone being capable of covering behind them when they are up field?
Sol might not get a handover from Waddock but does he need one with the dross having been there for all to see? RD and the other stalwarts behind the club will know and explain lots of the issues and background.
Sol's fitness guru will be putting them thru the tests and sniffing around the injuries and working out a plan; and who is malingering.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are long days of preparation.
For the first time in a long time I am up for this game and I suspect the team may well be too.
UTB!

Again, Lennon is suspended for Saturday so no idea why people keep putting him into their starting 11's...

With that in mind:

Oxley
Bwomono Kiernan Shaughnessy Ralph
Hutchinson Dieng Milligan Goodship
Hopper Humphrys
We are seriously lacking in availability given that 11 and I dare say the bench will be youthful. (Egbri, Aquah, Rush?, Bishop). It will take a miracle to get anything out of this game. Even with this lineup, I doubt Ndwuku will be anywhere near the side which just makes his loan even more pointless.

As odd as it may seem, I can actually see us getting something from this game.

Of course, I’ve done my standard bet of us to ship 4 or 5 goals, but I’ll be exceptionally happy to see that bet die a death

You watch Ridgewell be fit for this out of nowhere

Oxley

Bwomono Kiernan Ridgewell Shaughnessy Ralph

Hutchinson Milligan Dieng

Hopper Humphrys

Ok here goes,

Meatloaf

Adam Ant Shane Macgowan Suggs Rick Astley

Bros (#1) Billy Idol Ozzy Osbourne Bros (#2)

Dr Dre Snoop Dogg

Even if we lose 7-1 again at least the half time entertainment would be great, although I will admit we could get caught on the break somewhat with a lack if real pace

Probably do that Pete , but tbh Ralph as a defender is no more than average at best, so l was putting it out there that if he was dropped, l wouldn't be surprised, rather than appearing to be wise after the event.

Would have thought Kiernan is the perfect player for Sol to get the best out of. Anyway would try Cox out as a central midfielder with Hopper and Humphreys up front.
Sol and his team have at least all our games on video so hopefully will have some idea of set up and team. Would expect it to take a few games before we see a more settled pattern. We desperately need points as we can't afford the gap to get any greater than it is now during this transition to give us any chance

With our lack of options and season long lack of midfield cover for the paper thin defence, l might be tempted, if it was my call, which obviously it is not, to play three at the back with Kiernan as a sweeper, trying to create the cover from the back instead of the front. Two wing backs 2.central midfield, Cox in the hole and told to keep. There and not drop too deep, and lone striker.

If like to see Humphrys and hopper up top together. They are both physical and mobile and will cause defenders problems.

The rest of the team will be as sol sees fit.

To clarify:

Injured:
Hyam
Mantom
Ridgewell (not fit)
Barratt
Ndukwu

Suspended:
Macca
Hamilton
Lennon

Therefore my team:

Oxley
Elvis Shaugnessy Kiernan Ralph
Hutch Milligan Dieng Goodship
Hopper Cox/Humphrys (whoever is fitter)
