I expect to see:

Bentley
ONeill
Thompson
Bolger
Barrett
Hendrie
Leonard
Atkinson
Deegan
Barnett
Payne

Subs: Loza, Hunt, McQueen, Kamara, Smith

Isn't a key feature of the "5 at the back" formation that we don't have "5 at the back" when we are attacking?

Correct. And it worked very well at Posh and at home to Coventry.( It may even be the case that Hendrie is often found upfield too much for some people. (What was he doing up there to get the winner on Tuesday?)

After his performances in the Posh and Coventry games I cannot see PB dropping Jack. Could see Kamara starting, especially as there has been some question about Deegan's fitness.

Just a thought but can you ever see the day when there is no segregation at a lower division football club? OK we obviously need segregation for clubs such as Millwall however do we really need segregation for other clubs (such as Colchester, Fleetwood etc). Was speaking to a NFL fan (Kansas City) who was surprised we still had segregation. He used an example of the rivalry his club had with Denvor (which would be 100 times worse than ours with Col Utd). Fans enjoy banter outside the ground would have BBQs in the car park and sit next to one another without anyone causing trouble. It looks like fans will miss tomorrow's game due to us not opening Y and Z which is due to segregation which I think is a shame.

If Deegan plays are we running a sweepstake as to the number of minutes before his first booking/second booking and red/ straight red ?

In an ideal world...yes lets be friends. However the reality of human nature kicks in and says "lets fight!"
BBQ's in the carpark sound great....but I would imagine that there would be plenty of "marinating" of the opposition fans going on if they were right next to each other.

There wasn't the aggravation and segregation many years ago. Many a time I have stood on the South Bank and watched a game whilst the away fans stood only a few yards away for instance and still shouted support for Southend whilst listening to them support their team. Madness eh? Human beings acting like ........... well, human beings rather than baboons.

And I think you may have tapped into a quite big issue. Many have only grown up with segregation and the foul language and stupidity that is common place ........... and many "fans" are unable to comprehend how it is possible to support your team whilst not being unpleasant to the opposition fans and players.

If only we could go back to the good old days - you would be able to stand for matches, mingle and talk with other fans, drink alcohol and generally enjoy yourself in an atmosphere without swearing, the threat of violence and being watched with suspicion by stewards and police.

Excitement and nerves are kicking in now. Taking my boy to his first Essex derby tomorrow, he has naturally been fully briefed and I have sensed a gradual build up of hostility within him as the week has progressed. Personally I think he will be a bit disappointed when we first encounter an away fan and he discovers that they in fact only have one head :whistling:

I remember those days well. On the South Bank.

But it did still depend on the teams involved. There were plenty of matches where trouble occurred. Sometimes only minor.

Fences give people a sense of bravado. The "we'll see you all outside" mentality, but when it came to "outside" there wasn't quite so much muscle flexing.

However, there always was a minority that really didn't care and would lump someone inside or outside. The vast majority behaved. Even back then. But the minority meant segregation and fencing became the norm.

The whole thing is tribal. As illustrated in Desmond Morris' "The Soccer Tribe" or any of John King's novels, to name a few and for this reason, they wouldn't risk opening mixed terracing/seating again. The "buzz" for some people would still prove too much.

We were one of the last League clubs in the country to have segregation. I think it was about 1988/9 maybe that it came in at Southend? There was of course the odd match before that where segregation had been used.

Gillingham never had segregation until quite late on as well.

we wouldn't be unhappy with this list
Must watch Moncur.Good Player

Who to mark Moncur will have been one of the matters occupying PB this week. Perhaps he will go with Kamara rather than Deegs bearing in mind what will be a highly charged atmosphere.

Tell your lad to count the fingers & the boys holding hands (with girls or boys) are siblings.

I haven't read everyone's thoughts and predictions but I have a feeling this has upset written all over it. They haven't won for so long now you know how much of a boost it would be to them to turn us over.

I really hope it doesn't happen as there is nothing more satisfying than 3 points over those *****!

Looking forward to the game, but with predicted winds of 50mph +, I think the reward will come in keeping the ball on the deck. It's going to be diffucult for both sides, but if we play like I know we can we should win the game. Just hope the weather doesn't ruin the game.

Yes, get him along there ............ who knows when the next one will be if (and it is a big if) we manage to stabilise in this division (and push for promotion) whilst Colchester are in Division 4 where their limited crowds will surely affect their ability to be at the top of the table.

I can see history repeating itself, when the Ewes get relegated several of their players, the good ones, will be off and away; and then the Conference trap door will be swinging wide open for their next big derbies with Braintree.
