SOUTHEND United head coach Kevin Maher is certain Cav Miley and James Morton can pla in the same midfield.

They really can't. Yes, we can get by with that if we need to, but not if we want to be progressive.

I don't see who it would be at the expense of either. It can't be for Coker and he never drops Husin. Unless he plans to play 1 up top with Coker in the 10.

Even in the last game when Cav came on they both went for the same ball a couple of times. Far to similar IMO.

This was always possible when they have not played and trained much together. Given time and preperation that may change?
I don't think going for the same ball is the problem. Morton needs time on the ball, to look up and spray a pass. He can do that in the 6 role. He is a lot more proactive and progressive when playing that role. When he plays the 8 role, he is on the half turn and has to play the ball quicker. Because of that, he goes sideways for the majority of the time because he doesn't have the skill set to get past a man like Coker or Husin can.

It's simple, Kev likes competition so you say that to them. "You're both good players, you're both playing for the role." Shoehorning players into the team should be a thing of the past!

We do still seem to be a little late to the season.

It is November and, for me anyway, I would have to think hard before I could say what our best midfield & striker combination is ........ and then factor in what our best substitutions would be ............... & in what circumstances ............... and I think my head would start to hurt.

It is a "nice" problem to have I suppose - better than having a shortage of players that is.

Luckily there are many, many experts on here to help us all out ............. [smiley face; tongue out]

From BBC Sport ;

Resurgent Southend aiming to catch out Addicks

If this tie was being played four weeks ago, you might not have given National League Southend United a chance against League One Charlton Athletic.

But the Shrimpers have rallied to win three and draw one of their past four games following a run of just two victories in their previous 10 (D3, L5).

The Addicks arrive at Roots Hall unbeaten in five and will be aiming for promotion to the Championship this season.

But Charlton are susceptible to a 'cupset', losing 2-0 away to League Two Gillingham in the second round last season and 3-1 in a replay at Stockport the year before, who were also one division below.

There are two tiers between these sides but will that matter on Saturday?

Crowther Taylor Ralph
GSM.......................................JB
Morts..............Cav
Moncur
Bonne..........Bim

Just an idea for a reshape of our triangle midfield with two "defensive" holders behind Moncur (or Keenan/Coker) with Moncur more able in supporting front two?

With a fit squad come options, and hopefully KM and team know what/how CAFC will line up.
I don't see it as a likely start line up as there are too many changes from the tight teams of last 4 games; but it could be a formation to finish and see a game out with?
