I would usually take Walker over Bonne but agree he worked well in tandem with Pepple, so yeah, keep those guys together and bring on Walker for an extra time winner 😉

Keeper choice is a tough one but a nice problem to have. I was impressed with Jeacock, but I'm a Collin fan too... I'd perhaps keep Jeacock on for this one, and bring Collin back on the league games.

I've already told my son to prepare for disappointment on this one, as he does get upset after a loss! You never know though.

How many are on the bench for this competition? Is it the usual number (7?) or more?
Sorry to have to ask but the rules do keep changing.
Just looked this up:

In the Competition Proper, each Club may:

118.1. include a maximum of nine substitute Players on the Official Team Sheet;

118.2. use five substitute Players at any time during a Competition Match, provided they are
used as part of either (a) the three available opportunities to make substitutions during
normal time in the Competition Match (excluding the half time interval), or (b) where extra
time is played, the one additional opportunity to make substitutions during that period of
extra time (excluding the break between full time and extra time, and the half time interval
of extra time). For the avoidance of doubt, any substitution opportunities not used during
normal time are carried over into any period of extra time; and

118.3. where one of the Club’s Players suffers a concussion (or potential concussion) during a
Competition Match, be permitted to use one additional substitution in accordance with
the relevant IFAB protocol adopted by The Association and communicated to Clubs from
time to time (such substitutions shall be permitted in addition to those referred to in Rule
118.2).

Got this reply from SUFC earler
" Unfortunately Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup Fixture will not be live streamed as per tournament regulations. Further, as the game is being played on a Saturday 3pm kick-off we would not be able to broadcast the game domestically as per article 48 of the UEFA Statutes. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause."

I'm expecting a tough match on Saturday. I think Charlton will put out a strong side to try and win with a bit to spare. So we have to be at our very best and hopefully we will be.

Why my above thoughts?

With the large increase in prize money this year in the early rounds, for the lower league clubs, even large ones like Charlton, the money on offer is much more considerable than in previous years. In fact £2.4m increase, weighted towards the opening rounds. and a total FA Cup prize pot now up to £20.3m this season.

Take Rnd 1 and Rnd 2 for instance.

Rnd 1 is worth £45k to the winner and £15k to the loser
Rnd 2 is worth £75k to the winner and £20k to the loser

Obviously, you have to make the usual match day cost deductions, depending whether you are home or away, but hopefully get the benefit of a higher than usual gate contribution to balance that out. But there is still a major boost to budgets for smaller clubs, that for the most, is an unbudgeted bonus.

So for EFL teams like Charlton, the carrot is there to play a strong team in the 1st round, and if you get a favourable draw in the 2nd round and win that, you would bank £120k with a further £25k guaranteed even if you lost in the 3rd round.

The same carrot is obviously dangling for us, but I would expect to league sides to make stronger team selections this year and the number of non league sides making it through to the 3rd round drop on the back of this, over previous years.

Saturday is going to be great to see and feel that special full Roots Hall atmosphere. With a bit of luck and a rub of the green we can edge it and reap the rewards, not just on the pitch, but off of it too.

No money for fourth, fifth or quarter finals losers!

No, apparently the increase in prize funds was all injected mainly in the early rounds as some sort of small compensation for the removal of replays from the first round proper.

Say a club like us lost in the 5th round similar to Maidstone last season, you'd have to hope that the 5th round tie was away at a larger club to maximise gate revenue opportunity, but in reaching the 5th round you would pocket £364,375.

Not small beer for a NL side entering in the 4th qualifying round. (and gate money, less costs on top of that).

Will the players have been pen practising this week?
Keep it tight with Ralph at LWB to start.Gubbins, Crowther, HT, in CB trio and GSM on right WB.
Bonne and Bim up top.
3 midfielders are tough call, and for me start with what has worked okay Morton Noor and Coker.
Not sure on GK choice but I do favour the "keep the shirt" idea generally..

You can also see why the big Prem clubs field weaker sides. If someone like City won the cup, they'd earn £3,910,000 in prize money, just about enough to pay the electricity bill for a season!

They'll come rocking up to little old Southend assuming it's a done deal to them. Bim will knock in two before half time, Bonne will come good against his old club with a second half double and the Blues watertight defence will keep Charlton at bay until the final whistle. The headlines on Sunday morning will be huge,, 'Giant killers Southend kick out the Addicks'. :Dim:
