Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 4-0 Oldham Athletic

That really was a CLUB performance yesterday. Everything and everyone worked in unison to achieve that result. The staff, management, players and fans all collectively united as one. I saw Southend United yesterday. It genuinely brought a tear to my eye to witness that.

I really can't comprehend how any true fan can honestly want a phoenix club and lose what we created yesterday, just to spite Ron.

The entire team were clearly fired up and you could tell that their remit was to give something back to all those loyal followers that have worked tirelessly. Whether that be the amazing staff or hardworking fans.

Regarding the game itself, it was the best game in a blues shirt for a number of players. It was definitely the best Fonguck, Ralph and Taylor had played for us. Big shout out to Powell. I've not been his biggest fan in regards to quality, but boy did he work hard yesterday! It helped having Cardwell working so hard alongside him too. To a man, we were brilliant.

I said to the people I was with, one could argue that the starting 11 was better than the starting 11 against Borehamwood last season. Mooney and Coker were like new signings coming on. Hopefully they can plug a gap while we find investment.

They did us all proud and I'm sure they felt the same about us. Roll on Saturday and let's finally get a win at their place!

Is there an official site to see bookings? BBC is not showing Kensdale as getting booked and our official site has 4 yellows for Oldham all in the first half, they deffo had one booked 2nd half. BBC shows 5 yellows to Oldham. Ta

I was told that Kev had a talk to him and persuaded him to stay. certainly looks to be the case.
Yes most likely something in that. Listening to Kev after the game talking about Mooney he spoke about how he could find the best ways to bring out the talent in the player that he knows is there. It was Kev acknowledging that if Mooney is out there the set up has to accommodate him. I think its been mentioned before he seemed to be used a lot off the bench at Altrincham to change things up and when you look at the goals he scored for them an awful lot mirror yesterday, on the right cutting in, left foot shoot across the Keeper. Seems to be one of those left footers who are more effective on the right, arguably one dimensional in his game overall. If he stays it will be interesting to see how Kev uses / fits him this season with more effect than last.

Not too much to add that hasn't already been said. But it didn't escape me that last season the games against Oldham epitomised our lack of cutting edge which was why we missed out on the playoffs. Total dominance of both games but somehow only won the first 1-0 and that defeat at Boundary Park, I'm still trying to work out how we didn't win at a canter.

So to give them a pumping was rather appropriate.

That was the best game, the best all round team performance I have seen at the hall for a very long time. It is clear that we have a very strong, tight knit unit of players here, with a talented and committed set up with Kev, Darren and Mark masterminding the footballing side. Yesterday showed what we can do, and how well we can do things. With a bit of luck, we can avoid any injuries before we can start to strengthen.

I was hoping for a win yesterday, fully expecting us to buckle under the weight of the enthusiam and energy of all their shiny new signings at Oldham. I was fully expecting Hobson to pop up and score a rare goal - would have been just our luck! For what its worth, he was their best player by a mile yesterday, and I felt desperately sorry for him as he walked off at the end looking utterly defeated and pretty miserable! If there was a way back for him, he is welcome back as far as I am converned.

To come out all guns blazing, dominating the game across the pitch, holding firm in defence, the midfield is the best we have seen in years, and our strikers getting in the mix, causing a world of trouble, and scoring! Hy hope was an early goal then hold on tight. I was thinking we would start to struggle around 65 minutes and run the risk of conceding. I was certainly not expecting 4-0. Just wow!

I dont think the midfield has looked that good since Kev himself was playing! Wes Fongook was on fire, he was everywhere but started to run out of steam halfway through the second half. Husin is pure class and Cav Miley is a player much like Kev in his vision and quality. Was lovely to see how Oli Coker has developed, he went on loan as a boy last seaon, and come out yesterday all man! And what a goal! Taylor impressed me a lot, I thought he looked more comfortable in defence yesterday than he did all last season in Midfield. Kensdale didnt put a foot wrong, apart from a silly booking. Nathan looks like the player we signed originally, he is really too good for this league, and I really hope he gets through the season without any more long painful injuries. Bridge faded in an out a bit, but was there when it mattered, and GSM is improving a lot. Upfront, Cardwell has it all as a Striker, tall, good in the air, good on the ground, physical, good looking... and he got on the scoresheet with a fantastic header, could have been more! Powell really is like an annoying little terrier, getting under everyone's feet, causing defences a load of problems and running like the duracell bunny. He does best when he plays with instinct, as I think he overthinks things and tries a bit too hard. That goal was pure instinct and I am so pleased for him, as he does know where the goal is! Then Mooney. That is the player we signed from Altringham. That is the player we were looking for last season. That is the player that will score for fun provided we make the right chances for him. That is also a player who looked like he was loving every second when that goal went in, and I hope it means it will be a gamechanger and he will settle and want to stay. And Colin - had so little to do that he barely figured in anyones radar! Made a couple of brave saves, his kicking has certainly improved and he looked confident and commanding in his box. A final shout out to JD. I am so glad he is staying on at the club. I dont suppose we will see that much of him on the pitch, was good to see him come on for the extended stoppage time. Did what was needed and made sure that we didnt get too excited and throw away the clean sheet!

being real here - that was a fantastic start to what will no doubt be a long and difficult season. With all of the close season drama, issues and protesting, it was also a timely reminder about what is really important at a football club - preserving the integrity of the football!

Next stop Daggers! Bring it on...

Let's hope that there are no more player departures and that the squad can be strengthened. Ron Martin can leave though asap.

Feel like it’s a good time to re-share this article I wrote after yesterday’s incredible match and Dan Mooney’s appearance.

I look at how our formation changes depending on the phase of play, and how to get the best out of Dan Mooney in our system.

Sorry I’ve actually got a ton of **** to deal with today so I can’t search around and quote/link etc. I have just watched Diversity’s coverage. I’m laughing, crying and I actually can’t come anywhere near in words how one video sums up everything. Utterly legendary, the coverage, the passion, the emotion. I couldn’t be there yesterday but that is the closest I will ever have been to Roots Hall without being there in person. I’m gonna be playing that again later today when I have the chance.

I think the penny may have finally dropped with Dan Mooney. Hopefully.... Last season he would have blasted that ball over the bar, as he tended to get a bit excited at sight of goal and would get his foot under the ball. That goal yesterday, he didn't snap at it once the goal was insight, instead, coolly passing it into the corner of the net. Much better. Way to go Dan Mooney.

The only surprise for me was that we attacked and went for the game. Must say thought Maher would setup for a 0-0. Perhaps lessons learnt?

Not too surprised at the outcome. All of the team were first teamers from last year. They know each other, tight knit team culture. It's already been commented on with the small squad value and previous promotion seasons.

I like Taylor and Ralph in that back 3 because they spread and become fullbacks to allow bridge and Gus attack as wingers. Having central defenders playing those roles might not suit as much. Lomas for example would be a direct replacement for kensdale (that said small squads will require to play anywhere).

I like Mooney in what I will always refer to as the Benji role. I'd love to see whether he could play instead of Gus. Attacking wingers on both sides could really open up the game but we would lose some defensive support and capability in our mid and deep defense transition ( bridge is not a wing back). The issue is his defensive game. Remember tilson always playing a more defensive winger in a 442 as an opposite to an attacking winger which enabled us to balance defence without the ball.

I also think Mooney is a better option than Powell in the box midfield alongside fonguck. Powell always an odd one - never a striker - perhaps another option to bridge ? We bought both Mooney and Powell to play wide forward in a 343 but seeing as we changed to a more fluid 352 they are probably both more valuable in the 2 up front.

I like husin and Miley protecting the defence and moving the ball forward. Miley perhaps operating as another central defender at times that's stepped forward. Good to see all 3 of our midfield play - husin, Miley and fonguck. 343 never allowed us to do that.

Love cardwell. Only going to get better with games.

I think this is a strong nucleus and good setup. I'd love to see us more attacking in games even though we've just scored 4. Looks like we've also learned to take shots. Mooney and coker prime examples.

Well done blues. Dagenham up next week. Tough game.
Re the bit highlighted:

Using Mooney as a striker in our 3-5-2, where he can drop deeper when we’re building from defence, and drift wide to rotate with GSM is the way to go - I’m convinced of it.

I don’t know what the latest rumours are but I’m desperate for it to work out for him here.

to lose one Mooney is unfortunate. To lose two would be careless.

Unfortunately Ron couldn't care less.

If there was not conclusive proof that if this club is sold to decent owners it will strap a jet pack to the club and the city I don’t know what is!!!

Fans superb players superb management team superb

SUFC in my book has the most potential out of any professional club in the U.K. right now given size and position
