Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 4-0 Oldham Athletic

#TheClubthatrefusestodie - What an amazing way to start a season some of us weren't sure we would see. That game, as others have said, will rank right up there in our memories.

I said on Twitter that this was the difference between a team which knows each other and their strengths and weaknesses well and one that seemed to be a group of strangers. Felt sorry for Hobbo, who looked quite shell shocked at the end. I am sure that it will come good for Oldham after a few matches though.

Defensively I thought that was as strong as I've seen us for some time. Collin looked confident in every aspect of his game and we were still convinced that was an excellent save in the 2nd half although it was given as a goal kick. Harry Taylor impressed me when I saw the Canvey game, and I am pleased that he seems to have settled into that back three so well, him, Kensdale and Ralph were solid as a rock. Kensdale needs to get his passion under control, we don't need him picking up silly cards for getting in the ref's face. The red had already been issued, there was no need for him to get involved.

Some seem to be surprised at how good Nathan Ralph was - I wasn't. This is the Ralph we have seen at the start of several seasons before being subjected to the kind of injuries that have left him sidelined for much of them. I thought the red card incident was going to be another of those but, fortunately, he seems to be ok.

The two wing backs were our quietest outfield players - which was surprising, Bridge worked hard in the 1st half and played some delightful triangles with Wes and Husin, but was marked better in the 2nd half. Gus seemed a little late tracking back at times as the game went on.

In the midfield, it was good to see Wes Fonguck having such a great hour or so, he does seem to tire quickly though. Having said that, I thought Husin looked tired as the 2nd half went on and was surprised he lasted the full 106 minutes! Cav grew into the game, having been over shadowed by the other two earlier on and put in some delightfully timed interceptions.

Up top, well, Callum got a very well deserved first goal of the season to get himself and the Club off the mark, he was just like an annoying wasp, constantly in Oldham's faces and they couldn't cope with him. Cardwell worked hard throughout and also got a deserved goal at the end.

Couldn't have asked for more from the subs - Coker, what a young star this lad can be, scored an excellent one and made Cardwell's as well. Looked interested and up for it from the moment he came on. And I was delighted for Dan Mooney too, I hope he just needs to fall back in love with Southend United Football Club and that yesterday will have helped. As others have said, he didn't look like a player who wanted to leave, so let's hope!

Collin - 8
Gus - 8
Taylor - 9 (joint MOTM)
Kensdale - 8
Ralph - 9 (joint MOTM)
Bridge - 8
Miley - 8
Husin - 8
Fonguck - 8
Powell - 8
Cardwell - 8

Subs:
Coker - 8
Mooney - 8
Demi - n/a

It's not worked for years! Permanently at 2.30 now!
It’s advertising for the local Dentists …😉

Well done today, totally outplayed us
Good luck with the future and securing your clubs future.
Hopefully you enjoyed us singing Martin out 😊
Aah ,thanks for that —it must have been quite near the end of the match … every time our lot start chanting that, we can’t seem to get anywhere near the ball for the next ten minutes or so .

One of the most comforting posts earlier in this thread was that which informed us that, per his partner, Harry Taylor loves playing for the club. Coming from someone who was not a regular starter last season, that is good to hear. Confirms what other players have said about the camaraderie within the squad. Fingers crossed that it remains so come what may. None of us know what is round the corner, not even the Great Helmsman I suspect.

Truly justified the decision I made right at the last minute. I got to that head v heart moment and being honest I started thinking why the **** is Kev and team still here. I needed to support them and also fed by a bit of well being etc. You get to see your dad and spend quality time with him. So I decided to buy the season tickets.

Turned up at 1:38 and had to park right up by the hospital and then a slow walk to the west stand with dad but I wanted to buy a kit so walked to the shop first. Got there at just gone 2pm and the queue was out the door. Couldn’t find an XXL home kit so picked up the away and asked my dad to watch to see if they were replenishing stocks.

I’m the queue was a mother and son. The son was probably about 6 or 7 but he was soo excited and just didn’t stop talking. I actually started to feel sorry for his mum as the closer to the end of the queue we got the more excited he got.

He just wanted to put on that shirt. Found out he’d seen 1 game last season and loved it so much he made his mum bring him again. This is our lifeblood and there were soo many youngsters yesterday.

Just before I got to the end of the queue my dad had managed to get a home kit in my size as well. Great start and let’s face it such awesome kits this year!

Walking round to the west stand dad and I did the usual talking everything SUFC. We both thought this was gonna be a tough one and when he asked me how I saw it I said the only thing that could work in our favour is that our team was a close knit group that knew how each other played but I thought they would struggle later on due to fitness and the lack of pre season.

Queued up and got in so easily. They just scanned the QR codes and we were through. 12:29 time to queue for a pint 🍺. The queue was right the way back to the door and moved slowly until the pump obviously needed changing and it appears that both taps are connected to the same barrel so complete standstill for 5 minutes. Would be better to have a barrel connected to each tap to avoid complete loss of service Got served at 2:43 with 17 mins till kick off.

Moved to the concourse and it hit me how many fans had bought the new kit. I would say 1 in 4 to 5 were proudly wearing it and got asked 4 times how much it cost and told how good it looked. They have got this bang on this year.

Went inside and took our seats. In awe of the away support and really thought today with all that has happened is a free hit. And then……

Well one of the most competent displays I have seen from the boys! The movement, energy, passing, passion and desire was second to non. The amount of balls in behind their defence put them under pressure from the get go.

Completely on top throughout although around the hour mark there were signs of fatigue at times but the crowd pulled the players through this.

My scores on the doors

Andeng Ndi - 8 All round solid game important safe to his left in the 1st half and 2 important commanding catches from corners. Gave me a heart attack in the 2nd half with 3 poor passes that could have been costly.

GSM - 8 The passion this guy shows is just incredible. Worked tirelessly up and down the flank and a couple of really timely interceptions

Ralph (C) - 10 MOTM This is the best I’ve ever seen him. Crutch tackles time after time. Won ever header and connected so well down the left flank. Incredible performance.

Kensdale - 7 This one surprises me a bit cause although generally solid and in control he gave away the ball the most and one of them was a real hospital ball. Made up for it in the man on man that he did. Normally better in my eyes.

Bridge - 7 Connected well down the left flank with the trio of him Ralph and Fonguck. Just didn’t feel that he had us man as usual.

Husin - 8 Really worked his socks of and some of his passing was sublime. Through balls behind their defenders on several occasions putting us on the front foot and connected so well with Miley.

Cardwell - 8 Lead the line really well and his movement was at times inspired. Was a real handful for opposition and his movement for Mooneys goal was wow 🤩

Powell - 7 Worked his socks off as always and took his goal really well. A player that breeds on confidence. Still has a tendency to want to do it on his own a times. Needs to look up and find a pass and he would be so much a more complete player.

Taylor - 9 Wow, just wow. If it was Hobson’s choice then give me Taylor every day of the week. The amount of interceptions this man made. Player that deserved the clean sheet the most!!

Miley - 8 His usual dependable commanding presence in midfield that we have grown to love. Connected well with those around him and bossed the park.

Fonguck - 8 Blood sweat and tears from this man and played himself into the ground and when he was subbed you could see he had given his all. More of this Wes please and once in a while shoot ffs

Mooney - 8 Its all about the goal. When he joined and I watched the vids of his goals at Altrincham I thought wow. This goal was better than any in that vid it brought a tear to my eye! Hope he stays!

Coker - 8 Played like there was nothing to fear and by golly when a chance arrived he let it fly! Mature display and lovely assist to hope he builds on this performance

Demetriou - 7 Mr dependable to help see the game out. Did his job!

The emotion throughout the game and at the end was for the fans, staff, players and management team that have given so much.

Just what this club could achieve if only you know what!!

Took the old man back to Chelmsford then drove back to Peterborough with a massive smile on my face and lost my voice in the process.

Well Mr Martin, knowing your stated love of the Club was just wondering how you were planning to show your appreciation to the players for such an outstanding performance? Pay the B&L water bill so they have showers and can flush a toilet ? I know how about sell up and just feck off! Oh and don't forget to pay the taxman on your way out!

I hope that you meant "crunch"!

There are times when the Gods don't shine on you, particularly for this poor Oldham supporter. You reall have to feel genuinely sorry for the bloke. (From their fans Board)

As far as opening days of the season go that was an interesting one... Designated driver... Car hit in the car park whilst we were having a pre setting off breakfast leaving a dent by the rear passenger wing, perp ****ed off leaving no details... Arse handed to us on a plate by a team with 14 contracted players... Blow out on the A1 87 miles from home, 2 hours in a lay bay waiting for a mobile tyre fitter who relieved me of £279 for the privilege as the car has no spare and the tyre repair kit didn't work... Flashed by a speed camera less than a mile from home at around midnight so another 100 quid and 3 points to add to the day... Still, only 3 points off the top... I may drink today.

Do feel for him in on a certain level, although would it be harsh to add glad it was the only 3 points pick up from the day!

Terrific team performance against the so called Oldham all stars who looked like they just all met on the bus to the ground. Only one team looked like they had a pre season. Just shows a well drilled team who know each other’s games beats higher league players. We did look leggy in the before our second goal but thankfully got the boost and second wind from that goal and Oldham then threw the towel in. Big congratulations to our superb coaching team.

Andeng-Ndi 8
Taylor 9
Kensdale 8
Ralph 9.5 MOTM
Scott-Morriss 7.5
Husin 7.5
Miley 8
Fonguck 8
Bridge 7
Powell 8
Cardwell 8.5

Coker 8
Mooney 8
Demetriou 6.5

Not much to add that has not been said, Ralph my MOTM, lead the team with a 100% commitment. Down to earth with a bump for Oldham, they looked shell shocked, if our players can stay fit we can still do something this season. Oh and avoid points deductions of course. UTB

Observations…

Roots Hall looked as good as it ever has over recent seasons.

Considering the state the pitch was in a couple of weeks ago, I thought it looked in perfect condition.

Team performance, I was gobsmacked, really didn’t see it coming.

All of the above achieved IN SPITE of Ron Martin. He must be forced out.

I just hope that we as fans cut the management team some slack when we hit a dodgy patch, which we almost certainly will, especially with the the embargo.

You're on the wrong thread mate.

Never did Tilly and Brush any harm.

We will not be “just fine” with a squad of just 16.

I wasn’t there today, so can’t comment on the performance, although absolutely buzzing off the result and can’t wait for the highlights.

A 16 man squad is not enough for a full season in the National League. Our starting 11 is good, I’d suggest our strongest 11 would be Lomas in for Taylor. That is a very good starting 11, but ultimately fell short of our goals as we weren’t able to add to the squad from September onwards.

A squad of 16, with a lack of a proper pre-season, will get found out eventually. I’m obviously hoping it’s not for a long time yet, and things have improved off the field so that doesn’t become an issue.
I agree with the comments on this theme.
Can I just put a word in for my man of the match. The Quiet One.
Colin the goalkeeper. Caught all the balls in crowded area. Starting to distribute well wlth his kicking too. Never roughled
