Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

Thank you for this, I have sat in the east greens also for around 30 years, it gets very tiresome reading the stupid comments, we sang our hearts out so much so I went home with a sore throat, just because you can’t hear us, doesn’t mean we don’t make a noise. We are all Southend, we all support in our own why, stop trying to push your prospective onto others.
I don't mean to upset anyone, anyone who attends the games, whether they sing loudly, hum along or don't make a noise whilst in the ground have my full respect, as supporting any lower league team is not easy, particularly our club in recent times.

However, Saturdays game was noticeably louder from all parts of the ground I'm just wondering why it isn't like that more often?!?

Maybe the Yellows, Reds, Greens, Blues should have a sing off!! @shrimperjon get your vocals warmed up! Lol
ha, ha id be happy to prove many wrong. But i dont need to. Everyone supports the team in their own way, home or away. Some sing some dont. I join in with those that do but will never criticise those that dont. lets just be happy we have a club to support

Completely forgotten it seems. And the after effects of that almost demise are what is causing the fans to be more quiet as we all want success now but some are more pragmatic than others. We could have lost 7-0 against York on the opening day for all I cared. We had a club still.

We now have options across the pitch, excited to see what the rest of this season holds.

Saturday was great no doubt about that. but there were times in the past few seasons when under the embargo, one sub etc that the whole ground got right behind the team. Chesterfield in particular springs to mind. What helped Saturday was we came from 2 down, then equalised in injury time so naturally there was more for the crowd to get behind than maybe a routine win over Tamworth. but the crowd also has to feed off the players as well. Some of the home performances this season have been dire so its then hard for anyone to get motivated by this. There is no wrong or right about this. But i agree Saturday was right up there with maybe Sunderland at home. Also think it helps with a decent away following although for their numbers they werent massively vocal

We used to have a various sing song around the stands.

We're the West Stand,
We're the West Stand,
We're the West Stand of Roots Hall

Then the South would chime in then the East and so on
Many grounds do that. Be great if we could get that back.

Picked up on the point asking why was the atmosphere so good v Charlton and not other days. @Lavender Blue

Easy one really.

Our attendance of away fans increased which increases the banter and noise levels of the home crowd as they feed off eachother. It's also natural that a comeback against a League 1 team gets the crowd more excited than a NL side. Just how it is and difficult to replicate. I'm sure if we go 2-0 down to Yeovil and make a comeback, it won't be the same against Yeovils 25 fans as it was against Charlton.

It's a great topic though, and anything we can do to increase the atmosphere, without insulting or targeting particular areas, only spurs the team on. Ralphy kind of suggested this after the game.

Every section is unique in its on own way. I haven't been in W for a while and loved the atmosphere there. But equally, I love being in the East Greens. Yes it's a very different atmosphere, but the people there are all great and equally show their passion, allbeit in different ways. We're still one club and every section should be valued equally for what they bring.

Not one to do post match ratings as I don't think it really matters, but seeing a lot of talk above about Collin.

My initial view on their 4th goal was that it should have been keepers ball, from a long direct ball into the box. Having seen it again with the benefit of the highlights it definitely was keepers ball. What we don't know is if Collin called for it and Taylor ignored the call and executed his poor header (he was off balance in his defence) or whether Collin didn't call for it, in which case little blame can be apportioned to Taylor.

All this is largely irrelevant of course as it happened and they must all learn from it. All I do know from years of playing centre half, is that I would have expected my keeper to call for that ball early as it would have been an easy claim if it had made its way through.

If the balls going over my head I’m shouting for the keeper to come out, not the other way round!

I could write up a post about how great a day it was and how proud I am but its all been done, ultimately a quality performance with a huge amount of entertainment. How I miss those days.

I messaged a Charlton supporting mate after the game and fully expected him to tell me how impressed he was and how lucky they were. Instead he told me how they should have been 4 nil up at the break, as if we didn't have any chances of our own. How the pen was never a pen, how crap our players were etc etc etc. I was genuinely shocked and I now fully doubt his ability to understand football and the fact we're two leagues below. Not to mention on a budget no where near there's.

Personally I thought they had quality but they weren't anything amazing, we held our own and had 16-18 shots I believe. If we could finish we could have won that. The first 10 mins of the second half was exciting as hell, we had them bricking it.

Fantastic game!!! When that 3rd went in, what a feeling!!!! Lets take that into the league now.

Only bad note is, Colin scares the hell out of me.

I only listened to the match, wish I had made the effort to come up from Devon.
I think we gave everything on the pitch, performance was more than most of us expected. Total respect to the players and staff, also the loyal supporters who created a fantastic atmosphere.

I always think that a roar as a team goes forward has more impact than singing. Most people do that regardless of where they sit.

In any other season we would have been looking forward to a replay at The Valley, but because of Premier League greed we have been robbed of this. Just been on BBC Essex talking about this to Ben Fryer. Rewind to 11:30 if you're interested.

Fantastic comments, beautifully backed up by stats about the spurious NL Cup. (Or whatever it’s called). Great pitch to fans to get down to Roots Hall too. 👏👏

What I find odd is that the "F.A. Cup is a jewel" etcetera (add any of the usual phrases) ............

........... and what we have in this country & with this competition is tradition & history in bucket loads - no other country or competition can get anywhere close - something to be proud of, something to be celebrated, something to be nurtured and continued .............

............. and yet the F.A. seems set on chucking that all away.

Hash tag: stupidfeckers

Bit like the ECB chucking away the County Championship in favour of The Hundred...

@Shrimpergonzo I've just taken up your suggestion and listened.
Excellent!
