Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

Very concerning to hear about Collin suffering abuse. His confidence must be at a low ebb. He is a very promising young keeper and I am sure the coaching staff will help him back to the high standards he set last season. It is probably best to put him on the bench for a while but ease him back by playing him in the Essex Senior Cup and FA Trophy ties.

The stick Collin gets is out of proportion and unhelpful and the reason he performs better away from Roots Hall. Unfortunately, If he can’t find a way to rise above it he’ll have to go which would be a shame.

I'm old enough to remember when home fans did their best to put the away keeper off. Not the home keeper.

Yes the rise of social media and all that. Yet clearly its not all young people who like to abuse......All from the safety of the stands or their keyboards. We have even had some on here trying to justify it....."He is footballer and well paid"....."it happens at other clubs" etc.

Plenty of prats in the West of an age to know better and just come to shout aggressive nonsense and think they’re watching peak Barcelona.

Had to be in Somerset, but from speaking to my boy in W block, BBC Essex online comm and SZ it looked like the boys put up a great effort, one to remind some of our percentage of god awful moaning fans that there is remnants of a good squad slowly being put together and to be proud of.
We are going to need those god awful moaning fans to support us some more to help get out of this very competitive National league, starting with Yeovil next Sat.
Watching D1versity, seeing some of the main stands out of their seats clapping and singing, great stuff please do this more and join in with W block Blue Voice.
North bank soon coming home to us, please get us behind the goal COSU. The players need to HEAR the support for them to spur them on.

Good to see Kev fuming, we threw that away and should have had them take penalties, i was fuming too.
Those players are having to step up big time to get close to Charlton, but that win at Rochdale was huge for us in many ways and if we can continue to build on these performances, well its a must really.

The boys defended brilliantly at Eastleigh, Rochdale, Shots and Tamworth, lets not pull any of them apart after this big Charlton game, we are climbing the table nicely.
This Yeovil game is huge for us and we owe them after the FA cup from last year.
Can we please stop all this nonsense. I sit in the East Yellows. Have done for 30 years. Sure there are many who dont sing etc but there are also many of use throughout the East stand whether yellow, green, black red blocks who do. Wino and quite a few from BOT are also in the East and we all get behind the team. if you go to Palace they have the Homesdale end which is their main singing section, Everton the Gladwys Street, Anfield The Cop but doesnt mean other areas dont join in. At the moment W block is our main singing area and Dan does a great job with the drum but even my son and his mates have said recently the atmosphere isnt what it was last season etc. Tamworth on the most part was quiet other than when the goals went in. But can people stop having a dig at other areas of the ground. the acoustics are dreadful so the sound doesnt always travel or seem as loud to people in other areas. We are all Southend fans and there will be those that sing and those that dont. Every ground in the country is the same.

Spot on @Target man , it is going to be hard and I am sure he will get his mojo back. What I want to hear more of is shouting commands from him, telling the defenders the ball is his, he is getting out for it, a big loud "mine" etc.
GK is a lonely position in a team game and the defenders can do their bit too in chatter and calls; something Lapata was very good at but not so much our current CBs.
I believe Collin went into this game knowing he was only starting because Jeycock was not available to Kev for selection. Added pressure knowing he needed to perform because at the present Collin is not automatically first choice in Kev's eyes and Collin knows it and feels it. It's going to be all about the reaction from Collin and hopefully he can overcome this disappointment and dip in form, strengthen his all round game and fight back positively, let's face it he is young enough too and has done extremely well as a fledgling keeper thrown into the spotlight due to the diabolical state of affairs that impeded the football club under and the previous dictatorship.
Collin's expedited development pathway into the first team has come with both positive and negative elements for the lad.
Unfortunately from what has been said to me, by a realible source with close connections, is that the management team have become frustrated that Collin keeps switching off from what he has been instructed to do with the distribution of the ball and inconsistent movement off his line and the perception is he needs time out of the firing line to reset both mentally and technically.

In any other season we would have been looking forward to a replay at The Valley, but because of Premier League greed we have been robbed of this. Just been on BBC Essex talking about this to Ben Fryer. Rewind to 11:30 if you're interested.

It's an interesting point that you make about our attendances this season being higher than they were when we were in League One. Certainly I thought that our games last season when we had the siege mentality backs-to-the-wall tiny squad provided some of the most dramatic and enjoyable watching I've ever seen us play (and that's over 60+ years). It doesn't feel quite the same this season but I'm still enjoying it immensely. Watching a Premiership side would not feel the same at all.

It was good to be playing League One opposition again and I hope that it won't be too long before we are back in what feels like our rightful division.

Well said.

I was surprised about the attendances too - our average across all competitions this season so far is 7348, our average across all competitions in 2018/19 was 6204 (including the 10,779 against Sunderland).

The only other crowd above 8,000 that season was when we played Luton and that was slightly lower than we had against Daggers earlier this season. There were a couple of very low crowds (sub-2,000) which were I assume League Cup and whatever the EFL Trophy was called that season, but even excluding those the average is 6,577.

If you make it league games only in both seasons then we're still higher this season (7,155 v 6,821) despite much higher away followings in League One.

Haven't got loads of time to write about how much I enjoyed Saturday, despite the result, I'd largely just be echoing what has already been said. Nonetheless, here are a few thoughts

Best atmosphere at Roots Hall that I have experienced in many years. There were even points where all 3 home sides were clapping and chanting and yelling encouragement. I was absolutely grinning from ear to ear whenever that happened. If we created that atmosphere in league games I am certain we would be much scarier opposition for teams in the NL to play against.

Thought Pepple was incredible. He looked strong, quick and direct. Linked up play very nicely too.

Waldron looked decent when he came on. It will be interesting to see how he does over the next month or two, I suspect there is a very good player there.

Harry Taylor is the best defender in the league for me (his last minute header which lead to the Charlton winner aside)

Not a fan of Moncur in this side. A good technical player, sure. But I think he slows us down by a considerable amount when we are in possession.

I don't see how that last goal was Collin's fault, again I think it was more Harry's header, and he is a decent young goalkeeper. I do think we can and probably should do better if we are serious about promotion. If it is a confidence thing and he hasn't cracked that particularly issue after a season or 2 playing first team football then he needs replacing and there is no point doing that with another young keeper. No idea who though

Just incredibly proud of everything to do with our club after that game. I am certain King Kev will find a way of using that as a springboard for a run of positive results.

UTB!

Thank you for this, I have sat in the east greens also for around 30 years, it gets very tiresome reading the stupid comments, we sang our hearts out so much so I went home with a sore throat, just because you can’t hear us, doesn’t mean we don’t make a noise. We are all Southend, we all support in our own why, stop trying to push your prospective onto others.

I'm not surprised. Doesn't really have much to do with the division, it's the football you're playing and results that determine people voting with their feet. Not forgetting the terrible ownership we had then and the now optimistic wave of change. I've no doubt when we reach League 1 again, YES WHEN, I'm sure our crowds will beat the previous, especially with the work COSU is doing to reach out further in the community to attract the next generation.

Maybe the Yellows, Reds, Greens, Blues should have a sing off!! @shrimperjon get your vocals warmed up! Lol
