Come on folks, this is the match reports and ratings thread. Enjoy the moment and the weekend. There will be plenty of time during the week for the 'papering over the cracks' brigade to wax lyrical then. We are not perfect, but we are Southend UNITED tonight.

Anyway, brilliant performance today and everyone worked their socks off. Special mention to White and Atkinson; they may not be the most gifted players, but they do the job they are their to do.

Final mention to Mooney; I've never been his biggest fan, but he was excellent today

What part of DWB's origional comment isn't related to the match then?

Maybe you could rename the thread to happy-clappy match report? As I said, it's a ****ing excellent win, fully deserving of genuine plaudits. But let's not be fickle. A dose or realism doesn't hurt

My post wasn't specific to DWB and I doubt he took it that way. After a long week of realism I offered my opinion, you may not agree with it, but I'll live with that.

Excellent performance. The effort was great and atmosphere in the ground was lifted in response.

Hats off to PB for getting it right. If the performances and results carry on like that then he can stay.

Mooney was great today. I never thought I'd type that. Coker looked back to his old self. Demitriou was excellent. Barrett won so much in the air.

Great finishes too for all the goals

Ref had a shocker

I am only passing on what I was told. I'm not the sort of person to make things up. I won't bother next time.

FWIW, I think it was a very good team performance. Oxley was a different player today, he came for everything and won pretty much everything, We attacked as a unit and defended as a unit.

McGlashan, McLaughlin and Mooney hassled constantly, the back four, guided by Barrett did a fab job marshalling Morrison. He spend all his time pushing, pulling or whining at the ref, who was rather weak. Their number 3 should have been sent off for the knee high tackle on McGlashan but only got a yellow. Then when the 3 pulled McGlashan down again, the ref ran over getting his card out and then bottled when he realised he had already booked the 3.

Mooney, well taken goal after good work on the left and a lovely run into the box from McGlashan, lovely strike from McLaughlin and our nerves were settled by O'Neil.

10/10 for everyone today

Dont want to put a damper on today's performance, but if you going to make a bold comment like that, it really needs to be 1st hand info, especially when you quote it as fact later on. Not doubting you heard this, but I would have needed to have seen/heard it myself before posting.
FWIW I still think we have a long way to go before we are out of trouble.

Great result and glad to hear the players looked committed. I stayed away today, I was driving back from a wedding in Oxfordshire but was back by 1pm so could have gone but couldn't face another turgid home display. Serves me right.

A first home win in six months, a first on a Saturday since February 6th. It's great when it happens but it needs to happen much more often - my opinion on the manager does not change but credit where it's due. Delighted with the win, west ham lost and col ewe conceded a late equaliser - a great Saturday!

... and you would have sold 1,000's of copies of AAS on the way out to happy Shrimpers!

..... and Ipsh ite only drew and Pompey lost. So even better.

Mate, I'm just trying to add some balance to the vitriol DWB was copping. To me, you're post (that I quoted & replied to), read that we shouldn't offer any criticism in this thread. If I'm wrong, and you didn't imply that, then I apologise. But to me, DWB offered some insight (which was match-related) & has got unfairly rinsed for it, (although I appreciate, not by yourself)

Basic bottom line, this is a fantastic result (especially for me, considering a close friend of mine is Millwall through & through, I've had endless fun winding him up) But let's not get carried away.

Best performance of the season by a long shot. Hard working, committed and finally played for the full 90 mins. A bit lucky to be leading as we could have been two down inside the first 5 mins, one save in particular from Oxley arguably could have been a game changer. Mooney took is goal well, and the expected **** up in defence led to their leveller. Second half I thought we were excellent and once in front never looked like losing and even scored the 3rd goal with 7 defenders on the pitch. PB not out of the woods yet, one result doesn't make a season. Need to get a positive result next week and then build from there. Predictably our afternoon was slightly spoilt by the Millwall thugs ripping down the gates and attacking cars in the car park.

Tremendous, Hope it keeps the "knee jerk" "the sky is falling" fans at bay for a while. Give this team & manager a chance to
improve this season. Wonder why they even support Southend sometimes.

Give it a rest, you're boring, these are the people who spend their hard earned actually attending games so get off your soap box.

Mooney was immense today, loved it when he had a go at the East Stand to cheer after he had run his nuts off to chase down the ball, real fighting spirit

Where on earth did that come from! If PB has lost the dressing room, there was no evidence of it on show today.

It's as difficult to pick a MOM today as it was v Fleetwood but for opposite reasons.

Great tempo and pressing, which for me is the key, especially in the lower leagues. All pro footballers have ability and can play; what's more, they will play, if you let them. If you close them down, press and hurry them, then especially in today's windy conditions - which I thought we managed much better - they will make mistakes.

Our crossing and set pieces were much improved today, it was almost as if we had suddenly sussed it out. AT last there seemed to be a plan, rather than a hopeful lob into a general area. What a difference that made, some really good balls in and we almost scored from a Lenny long throw.

No report as such, but ratings and a few honourable mentions -

Oxley - 8.5 - At last, a real performance with some saves, the first one after a couple of minutes was a game changer.

White - 8 - Totally committed, passionate display.
Coker - 8.5 - Best game for a long, long time.
Barrett - 8 - You know what you get
Thompson - 8 - Couldn't fault the energy and commitment

Demetriou - 8 - Made some great challenges and put some decent crosses in
Leonard - 8 - Broke up play brilliantly
Atkinson - 8 - did a great job alongside Lenny
McLaughlin - 8.5 - Great goal and not stop effort, such a contrast to his performance v Fleetwood
McGlashan - 9 - MOM - Gave us what we haven't had since Tomlin and Assombalonga... pace. Made the first goal, best game for us so far.

Mooney - 8.5 - Fantastic performance and if he puts that much effort in every week and stops trying to fall over and get the free kick he will win the crowd over.

Just what the doctor ordered, and as Mark Twain once said, "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

Southend are back.

It made such a change to see the first thought to be to go forward rather than back to the defence. I think we only passed along the back four twice and that was a genuine switch of play. I thought Demetriou was a great example of that although I struggle to think of a bad performance. Still feel the addition of a target man will help the balance. Great afternoon's work and great atmosphere.

Typical reaction. Have you not seen the results over the past six months? Knee jerk? What a stupid post. Fans are sick of lifeless effort from players, negative tactics and are merely voicing their displeasure. The fact that it isn't one or two but a large number suggests concensus. Why we support Southend? You're more than welcome to your opinion but I've been going 26 years home and away and I know when I am being cheated.... today feels a bit like that because they haven't been showing that kind of fight for the last six months. Why today?

As my post from earlier says, I am delighted with the performance today but this is not over until we are safely up that table and the performances return. That goes for Brown and the players.

Thoroughly enjoyed today and just goes to show how unpredictable we are. After the dribble I sat through last week I wasn't expecting anything too much today.
More than anything I liked the attitude we showed today and not once did I see the players shout or moan at each other and they were working as a unit today.
Without doubt this came across, loud and clear from the off and the crowd soon got behaving the team and it made for a great atmosphere which DOES have some effect on the players.
Hoping this will be our turning point and to be out of the bottom drop is a good sign.
