Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-1 Halifax Town

Careful Wiggy, your post is almost positive
He’s right on this occasion though. We’d be a lot nearer the promised land of the play offs if we hadn’t already dropped umpteen points due to tactical inflexibility. Last night, he loosens things up a bit and we win - which has happened on a couple of occasions before. However he usually reverts to type, so I’m expecting that will happen.

Yes hence straight afterwards the Noor chant from the Blue Voice. No way is Bonne doing that on the left flank. Bonne did play as if he had a point to prove though - I like that. Certain Orient fans questioned his character .. he has shown bags of it in my opinion.
Yes, we heard that and wondered why. That's how much we thought it was Bonne at the time.

The mood music wasn’t great ahead of kick off, seeing quite a few saying they weren’t going to attend, some ST’s who live minutes from the ground were not going to turn up. The question was which Southend was going to turn up? First 10-15 minutes were ominous, Halifax came out the traps fast, with purpose pressing us and forcing mistakes, notably Goodliffe and it took an important early block from Taylor to prevent a goal scoring chance. However as the half went on we grew in confidence and got on top and had the best chances Walker’s shot at the keeper and Gus having an effort ending up on top of the net. Kendall was a threat, albeit not looking like scoring and Morton and Bridge worked well together down the left. At HT I was fairly satisfied that we had more than matched a strong Halifax side at the break.

Second half Halifax again had the better of the early stages, but suddenly we clicked up a couple of gears and put more pressure on their goal forcing a number of corners which of course resulted in 2 quick goals. That would have knocked the stuffing out of many teams, but Halifax kept coming especially on the break and had a little fortune to reduce the arrears. Paul Clark said on comms, ‘I hope we don’t now go into our shell’ and we didn’t, Kendall finally broke free and showed what he can do with a calm finish and a happy celebration!

Watching from across the channel, very happy with my bargain weekly pass, think I’ll watch the highlights later!

Difficult to pick out a mom, strong performances across the pitch. Even those who made mistakes redeemed themselves, Walker not mentioned much I thought had a good game constantly pressing and providing an outlet, Hayes brilliant saves at the end, Kendall never giving up, Gus always a threat, Hopper quiet 1st half but clinical vital finish. All the others, including the subs making good contributions.

Maybe we’ll come back down to earth Saturday, who knows with this side..?

Fantastic performance, really dogged and committed. Every one of them playing as a team, for each other and for Kev.

Freezing cold night but warmed by that result.

I always think we play better against the better sides - though the Barnet game made me think again - but Halifax were a good side and the ref didn't have a lot to do as a result.

Defensively, solid. I thought Harry Taylor, in particular, had a fantastic game and he'd be my choice for MOTM. Midfield, well I thought Noor was one who clearly was troubled by the kit clash first half, as three times he made what looked like deliberate passes to a Halifax player. Morton also was troubled with this early on....why were his corners so much better at the South end? It's never normally as obvious as that! Two goals from successive corners, can't remember when that last happened! Offensively, pretty much as good as it gets with two goals from two forwards.

Well done to everyone on that result. You could see how much it meant to everyone at the end.

@Billy Bests boot laces sending hugs to you, hope everything goes well x

I honestly didn't think it was an amazing performance and we did ride our luck a bit at the back at times but it was great to get a win and to play some attacking football. I'm far from Maher's biggest fan but if he continues to play attacking football (which I doubt he will) then great. UTB

Firstly, no one can underestimate what a great result and performance that was. They boast amazing stats as an away team and we've come out deserved winners.

How great was it to see two strikers score? I thought Hopps led the line really well, but that was helped by having two willing runners off of him, on the shoulder causing problems.

I was in hospitality for the Sittingbourne game, so was up higher than normal, and you could really see how much we missed Bridge. People don't see what he does off of the ball. He pulls defenders away and opens up space for one of our midfielders or strikers to run into. We really struggle when he is not playing and are so easy to defend against too. Glad to see him back.

Gus... Wow! There were actually people on here asking for him to be dropped. Unbelievable. He hit the bar Saturday and hit it again yesterday, then scores. The guy has 12 goals! Let that sink in. He is a constant threat and any manager would need a lobotomy if he is dropped when fit. He was absolutely everywhere in the second half. Brilliant performance.

Kendall worked his socks off and I really didn't want it to be another post-match thread where that was all we were saying about him. So I'm so happy for him that he got his goal and boy did he take it well. Proper finish.

Goodliffe started shaky, but that was understandable with the nerves of playing at home, new back 3 and new goalkeeper. However, I actually liked his no nonsense, get rid of it style. That is needed when under the cosh. I felt we looked better in both boxes on set pieces as a result of him being in the team too. Don't get me wrong, I like Golding.

Overall, a great performance and I'm happy for all connected with the club that the chances actually started to go in.

Lastly, I still find it baffling that when we do well, hardly anyone comments on social media. 130 odd commented on twitter at full-time to moan on Saturday. Only 20 odd commented last night on the final whistle. It happens every time. I just find it so bizarre that people can't wait to be negative but find it so hard to be positive. Come on, let's cut out the negative jibes and chants and roll on positively Saturday. Utb!

I think that’s just the way it works unfortunately. I doubt there’s a football club in the world where this isn’t the case… when we lose it prompts a lot more opinion on what should have been done instead. When we win, typically a “like” of the post will suffice, so I’m sure that when we win the social media posts also get way more likes than when we lose. Don’t think it’s unique to our fanbase thankfully!

That's just human nature I think though, people are always more vocal when unhappy. Doesn't make it right but we can all be a bit like that, I know I can. One thing I'm sure of is if this style of play continues then win lose or draw the fan base will be a lot more united.
