Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-3 Barnet

I can’t remember the last time I walked away from RH as angry as that.

Angry at the sheer lack of quality in the squad.

Angry at a referee who should be investigated.

Angry at the substitutions.

Angry that we stick with the same methods even when we’re three ****ing nil down.

Angry at our inability to bring new bodies in.

Absolutely ****ing atrocious all round.
I honestly think referees are coming to Roots Hall trying to prove they will not be intimidated by a big crowed, hoping to be given a job in a higher league.

Can’t see the point in getting rid of Maher unless you give him the same budget Barnet, FGR and York have got and we’re still no better. We’re average because we’ve got an average NL budget. Change of manager won’t suddenly make average players great.
Incorrect

Barrow, Sutton, Harrogate and Bromley all got out of this league with diligent managers and tiny budgets

Personally, I’d hate for another ex hero to come in.. we need a ‘manager’.
It would be lovely to have a Tilson scenario, and by having another ex player come in, it’s always a risky move if/when it goes wrong

The paper thin squad is lacking any real quality. Especially since they all lost that siege mentality that is now very evident, covered up for some of these players lack of ability.

The signings this season have on the whole been poor. With the exception of Bim. Some of that granted is down to the late takeover. However, it can’t all be down to that. Something is very off with our recruitment process at the moment.

I’d keep half a dozen of this lot at best, genuinely. We need a huge clear out and COSU need to be ready for that.

We’ve been bent over today by a Barnet side that aren’t exactly flying themselves right now. Not acceptable and performances like that will test the patience of even the most hardened and quiet supporters.

Worst performance of the season. There was a chasm between the two sides and the scoreline was an accurate reflection of that.
Barnet had so much more pace and movement than us all over the park and crucially had players capable of carrying the ball forward at speed forcing us onto the back foot time after time.
I've mostly defended Maher for a long time, but he surely has to be more imaginative with his tactics and substitutions at the start of the second half. Husin and Miley had been a mile off the pace in the first half, with Coker not much better.
Throw caution to the wind and let's get KAF on earlier. Maher clearly doesn't think he's up to the job. Give Barnet something else to think about by going 3-4-3? Surely anything had to be better to avoid serving up the than the same dour, turgid rubbish we had to endure in the first half.

We're a million miles away from having a team that could challenge for promotion with little capacity to change things in the summer with so many players already under contract for 2025-26.

Pace, creativity and movement. We lack all of those things in the key areas that win you football matches. The service to the front two was probably the worst it's been all season today. Nobody was getting forward in support and consequently the ball just kept on coming back towards us. Truly abysmal.

A return to the EFL feels a hell of a long way off right now.

First signs of disquiet in the stands at the manager ,and apart from the disallowed goal we were quite frankly very poor all over . Any faint chance of the play offs sank out of sight .
Time for change at the top as this is so poor to watch

...and settled squads, and no embargoes, and stability for a considerable period.
Are you Kevin Maher's mate aswell as Chris Powell's by any chance?

I do get what you're saying, but targets aside, he largely has the same squad as last year and they are all paid on time now. The football has been even worse, we simply don't attack teams. We play for knicking a 1-0, if the other team scores first it's game over, almost every single time

You can't easily clear out when most of them are contracted until the end of next season. A handful of spectacular signings might turn it around.

Spot on. Some teams (Wrexham) buy their way out of the league. Others play their way out. I'd like us to do the latter. Bournemouth have won 4-1 at Newcastle today - compare the 2 teams budgets - it is NOT about spending money.

Barnet showed us today why we will stay in this League for several more seasons if we continue with Maherball.

They were quick, attacking, fast paced, always looking to play it forward, and in or around our 18 yard box within 4 or 5 passes.

COSU want sustainability and better burgers, but keep this up and they’ll be serving them to an empty stadium.

The squad list on the back of the programme is embarrassing- they have TEN more players than us.

Not even going to mention the ref from Colchester and the colour blind West Stand lino
