Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-3 Barnet

He isn't of Kev's favourites, can't risk dropping them

No he is doing your head in and a minority of vocal posters.

The simple fact is that this is a mid table squad. No amount of tinkering with the line up (or manager) will change that fact. If the squad isn’t strengthened then that, to me, signals COSU’s intentions for this season.

As for supporters leaving early, abusing players etc, you should be ashamed of yourselves. I’ve seen football much more dire at RH, admittedly in front of 2-3,000 crowds. Thick and thin springs to mind.
Utter cobblers...no one that watches Southend every week would play Miley and Husin especially when they are out of form. Also to do Collin's head in with inferior replacements is so bad on the boy!
Maher is so totally bereft of any attacking ideas that i would fear relegation even now!

I'm going to say something that might get some people going. I would have sacrificed Gus after 20 minutes, and put in a right back for a back four. He was getting run ragged, he was leaving huge space behind that they capitalized on. You could see them targeting him and that side, and it worked a treat. He also was running slower than usual, as if he is carrying an injury.

That was a horible watch yesterday, no question. Where has it gone wrong, genuinely, could be a million reasons, but here is my take.

Last season, we massively overachieved, because of the seige mentality and because we were playing more as a single unit. We had goals coming from across the pitch and we were playing at a high tempo.

Roll onto the long-winded exit of our mate from Benfleet road, holding up the takeover and the embargo, which killed our plans for the season and was likely the reason for at least a couple of exits - debateable whether others see these as "key" roles, but losing Fongook was the most disastrous, followed closely by Callum Powell. Wes was a bit hot and cold, but he had no clue what he was going to do next, which made him very difficult for defenders to deal with, and that opened up space for Jack Bridge. Then Powell was the ultimate duracell bunny, causing headache after headache for defenders because he did not stop running, nibbling at their heels and generally being a complete pain in their a****s! We were able to exploit that space created by these two, and when playing at pace and operating as a unit, we didnt need to be perfect but we were effective.

Then losing both Kensdal and Cardwell, losing Cav to injury and then both Husin and Bridge have lost form, the spine of our team has suffered badly and we are in rebuild territory, with a low budget to use in a situation where our original targets were snapped up by other teams before we could even get the embargo lifted. Our replacement signings since have been a disapointment, but I dont think you can blame these new players alone. Creating the atmosphere and the space for new players to integrate and start to perform is down to the manager and the coaches, and this certainly isnt right at the moment. You only have to look at the Moncur situation - his style is well known, so asking him to do an unfamiliar job he isnt comfortable with is not going to get the best out of him. And that is the case for several of the new (and existing) players.

What I observed yesterday was all round depressing. Barnet are (on paper at least) not a huge amount better than us, but what they did do was executed well, they are well organised and they moved forward with intent and in numbers, as a unit. So there is always a team mate to pass to or to pick up a loose ball. One of my buddies said exactly the same about York, where we were also horribly found out.

Contrast that with us, Walker is never going to score while he is doing left back defensive work, while the defence is busy having a nap. Kendall cannot score if he doesnt get the ball, fed into him properly and with back up available. Then, despite the many criticisms, Bonne is the only no 9 we have, and again, he is winning headers and flick ons, but with no-one there to pick up the second ball, he looks inept. With a defensive set up (which clearly didnt work yesterday), with little creativity, no one forward and moving at snails pace, threading the ball across the back between defenders then out to the wings and back again, we are in trouble.

Despite all of that, it needs a bit of a change of mindset from somewhere and a huge injection of enthusiasm, and we could go from looking like relegation fodder to solid mid table without a single new signing. I think it is clear we are not going up this season, and I think the hope of making the play offs are fading fast, so its the FA Trophy. We just need to not go down, but what I think would be useful is an update from somewhere, just stating priorities, because I think a lot of fans have to scale back their expectations.

Nonetheless, we do want to see a bit more enthusiasm and better performances on the pitch. Quite honestly, if we are not good enough, but you can see the energy and the effort, it isnt quite so bad when you lose. But that performance yesterday smacked of the game being lost before we even made it out of the tunnel at the start, and it was a genuinely awful watch!

Yet another serving of **** by Maher. Golding, Kendall and Walker the only ones to score above a 4/10 today… I can’t even be bothered to do ratings, much like most of that team couldn’t be bothered to compete today.

Barnet could have won 7-0 if they wanted to, but they knew they didn’t have to get out of second gear. Absolute nonsense.

It was good to see Jack Wood back from his loan period yesterday, his smile was as big as ever for my JBs. I hope he'll be given some opportunity now as we need people who can run at defences- something he can do.
He clearly isn't one of Kev's favourites so that's not going to happen unfortunately.

Stop going on about the transfer policy. Maher has brought players in, but still plays his favourites.

Gus had been poor since coming back from suspension, yet keeps Wind out of the side, even though he played well.

Morton and KAF can't get in the side, even though both Miley and Husin have been awful this season.

You really think of we sign these attacking midfielders etc everyone wants, will actually start!!!
You might know more than the management team about who they should be playing. Although I think playing favourites ahead of getting the best results is probably a stretch. But my view (and it’s a view) is that swapping Cav and Husin for Morton and KAF will not solve any problems or give better outcomes. If the management team thought it would they would change accordingly.

I doubt losing focus on the need to bring people in, in favour of moving around the deck chairs on the Titanic will be overly productive. Regrettably….

What a miserable afternoon at the Hall. Barnet romped home at a canter, they were head and shoulders above us in every aspect of the game. Quicker, stronger, more decisive in passing, more desire to win. What is that now 5 wins on the spin against us. The sight of that Love Island lookalike with his poncy hair Collinge gloating to the South after his first goal haunts me. Yes the referee was very one sided and not in a million years should our goal have been chalked off but we would have lost anyway. To continually concede goal after goal to corners to our far post area is unfathomable. If different players are making the same mistakes they are either not good enough or being coached wrongly. Time for a massive clear out, players and staff, we are nothing better than a mid table NL side. Now without Pepple looking over our shoulder. It was only November against FGR when Maher changed it up at half time and got a draw by attacking intent? Why not do the same yesterday?

Harness 4
Taylor 4.5
Golding 5
Gubbins 3
GSM 3.5
Coker 4.5
Miley 4
Husin 3
Ralph 4.5
Walker 5.5 MOTM
Kendall 4.5

Bridge 2.5
Bonne 3
Morton 3.5
KAF 3
Waldron 2.5

Josh Walker my MOTM at least he showed a little bit of willing to make runs and work. Ref killed Miley’s game with early booking after 3 minutes which really dictated the tone of our intensity for the rest of the 90 minutes plus. Hate to say it but also the lack of change to try something different to gain control sits firmly with the management team. Very stale feel about the place. UTB

I left early without watching the added time @ORM but I don't feel ashamed, sorry if that offends, but absuing players isn't right I fully agree (unless it was Steve Mildenhall!! 😇).

As for dire football, like you, I've see really poor stuff in the past under Dick Bate, Alvin Martin etc. & we've had plenty of other cack managers. However we need to remember that rubbish was at Old School Division 3 & 4 levels but we are now struggling to string a pass together at Division 5, so it's a lower standard we are now failing at.

Some of the matches this season, not just us, have been like watching park football. But at least you know in the park they are trying their best & aren't getting paid to mince around aimlessly (some) looking disinterested.

A big concern for me at the moment is the anti-COSU factions that are proliferating, the season being effectively over on the playing side. I don't have a problem with them being in the pub before a game & I had a good chat with Dave Kreyling on Boxing Day. Things are taking longer than they & we hoped which they know but unfortunately they are victims of their own initial success.

We all bought into the early enthusaism & given last season there was a deal of optimism about what could be done on the pitch this year which is now pretty well exhausted in the fanbase. I do worry however that, after a plethora of communication in the beginning, we are now hearing less & less over time.

Unfortunately the only thing we are likely to hear is a "vote of confidence" in KM but that will please many as it usually only has one outcome.

I think today was another example showing it’s not necessarily our strikers that’s the problem. Walker and Kendall tried hard, as did Bonne when he came on - but they get ZERO service, not a single ball to feet or for them to run on to… and haven’t had for months.

The only reason Pepple scored a few was that he could drop deep and use his strength to get through on goal. The other strikers aren’t that type of player.

With Miley, Husin and Coker behind them, what hope do they have… something needs to change and fast. Have COSU given up? Even if we’re giving up on this season and waiting for next, changes need to be made now so new players can get up to speed rather than waiting until the summer, when I’m sure we’ll hear the same excuses again when no improvements are made.

We have to be very careful - at this rate, there will be a hell of a lot of season ticket holders not renewing next season, and the dream of sustainability will look miles away.
Your last paragraph is where I'm at.
I am from Wales. Having worked all over the UK, I found myself in South East Essex.
A 12 year supporter, buying a game ticket each game.
This is my first year as a season ticket holder.
I will give it until the end of February.
If I still want to avoid a disapointing football match. My card will be given away.
Block C.

Morton and KAF got us through to the next round of the cup...could you ever see Miley and Husin doing that?

Agreed that right now the NB experiment isn’t working and needs a rethink but it was what a lot of fans wanted.

I don’t believe Maher is telling players not to shoot, of course he isn’t. But it’s looking flat and stale, there’s no spark. Something just doesn’t seem to be clicking. The general belief from the majority I chatted to yesterday was that Maher has been great the last couple of seasons but isn’t the man to take us forward.

Yes people have short memories but yesterday the tactics/selections were wrong (and Kev didn’t switch it up, IMO he should’ve made 3 HT subs), the football was dire and the body language of the players was terrible. It must be partly down to the coaching team.

Oh and 2 fellas in my row left .. one at HT one shortly afterwards. Not seen it that toxic in a long time.
The 'short memory' comments are wearing a bit thin now. We've played well in possibly 2 or 3 games this season and that frankly is not good enough, so I agree with your points.

Yes, this squad isn't a top 3 squad, but it's far better than were we are, and should at least be capable of being in the playoffs - and I don't mean scraping the playoffs, it's were we consistently should be.

I heard his post match interview on BBC Essex. He doesn't seem to want to take responsibility for anything. Not a good image, and if he takes the same attitude whilst managing the players can't be good
Here's something that I haven't seen mentioned on here yet, that is, how many current players who may put in a transfer request in the summer?
Maher was the same last season. We had a really poor run (think it was around February time) and he kept banging on about the 10 point deduction.

What the hell does that have to do individual matches!!
