Hmm. One derby win, a dismal defeat at Wembley, Marc Laird and losing at home to Morecambe or one derby loss, being top of the division above, Romaine Vincelot and beating the Ewes away. It's a toughie. :finger:

All you need now is a crowd to match the division you play in. :winking:

ive decided that reid reminds me of crawford; adds nothing to the game and it just seems to pass him. need to start corr instead of woodrow if we are playing hurst. i also noticed that when we attack, all of our players rush at the goal, there is never anyone on the edge of the box to pick up a loose ball and keep the pressure on or have a shot.

Hooper was also good for you and crap for us so what's your point exactly?

First game of the season for me and my son.

fiasco of getting in after collecting tickets and being sent from turnstile to opposite side of ground and back, not forgetting queuing up for replacement tickets and finally getting in 20 minutes later put us in just the right mood to watch the game (now we were thouroghly soaked through)! The club certainly makes it easy to encourage support.

fortunately being in the library (sorry think its called South Upper?) we were allowed to reflect on matters in peace & quiet.

my thoughts on the game were, we played attractive if not intelligent football, I've seen us play far worse and win. Given the conditions, why did we persist on the high crosses and shooting (blasting wildly?) from distance therefore playing in to the hands of theopposistion. Despite being on top in the first half, we had just the one corner and no dangerous free kicks so a goal would have to come from open play. Scunthorpe on the other hand managed to have good opportunities from set pieces but somehow contrived to waste these, if only we had had such chances.

Yes Scunthorpe scored on their first attempt on goal (echos of Matt Harrold scoring for Bristol Rovers a couple of seasons ago on their 1st chance) and Scunthorpe should have killed the game off thereafter but wasted good opportunities.

On reflection we did not play that bad for 60 minutes, we just did not have that extra bit of 'nous' in the final third and we played in to their hands after the goal (I understand players frustration but when time is running out why KEEP giving silly free kicks away?)

i thought the effort shown was good. Phillips in the 1st half showed his form from a few seasons back, he was cool in his own 6 yard box). Bentley had little to do and I can't understand earlier comments expecting him to be replaced - what did he do wrong? Yes Thompson was the weak point in defence (excepting that Coker may the key error) and I thought the midfield looked strong although lacked coheision with Atkinson clearly the star. Eastwood led the line (oh for his pace from earlier times) and I thought Woodrow tried hard perhaps his confidence was knocked from fluffing when he broke through on goal. To be fair Corr looked no more likely to score when he came on. Things may have been different if Leonard's header had been a foot wider either way early on (did he not use to have a long throw....?)

A awful journey back in poor conditions on A130/A12 was our reward and a vow to return some time in the distant future has somewhat mellowed overnight, but god it's not straightforward supporting this team.

Its a double edged sword.

When sturrock was here we played direct football but got results and people moaned.

Now PB is here we are trying to play football and not getting results.

Im sure we would all like to see free flowing football and wins but its a results business. As shocking as scunthorpe were they have taken 3 points from us.

What i found quite baffling is that Deon Burton was on the bench given that they didnt look like scoring all game. Also the guy with the dreads is probably what we are missing. We dont have a single player in out team who looks to take people on.

If we could just get some pace out wide and up top we will be there or there abouts.

Think the criticism is a bit harsh if Coker. Yes it was an awful costly mistake, but he had been one if our best players this season. We've been calling out for a decent left back and I believe he is. As for the goal, he was clearly trying to flick it away for a throwin or just away from goal, unfortunately he got his timing wrong and it hit his forehead rather than the top of his head. Just unlucky.

Yet you enjoy spending more time on here than your own forum.

Ok I've calmed down. I actually walked all the way back to deepest Eastwood in the rain trying to analyse the game. I've only seen the last two and I fly back next Saturday so no more until Xmas. Back four is clearly under strength and it is no good being tight for 60 minutes then gifting a goal. It happens from time to time that's life but we have no one commanding defender marshaling the troops. In midfield I like what PB is trying to do but we have no creativity (Gower) no thought (Maher) and no one seemingly wanting to or capable of driving forward (their Ricky Otto). Up front I actually think we are fine.

Pretty football 50 yards from goal doesn't win games.

Average performance by all, the goal was one of the horriblist goals I have seen for ages.

We made some decent chances first half but the headering all night by everyone was pretty off due to the weather.

Scunthorpe had won the game as soon as they scored. Afterwards the won everything and controlled the game. Our subs brought little to the game also.

Brown has a tough job to do here. At least he has the plus of a firing freddy.

Bentley 7

Thompson 6
Phillips 6
Prosser 7
Coker 6.5

Hurst 6.5
Atkinson 7
Leonard 6
Timlin 6

Woodrow 6
Eastwood 7

The bit emboldened interests me as much as anything else, having missed goals in the past trying to get in after arriving only half an hour before kick-off.
The ticketing at Southend has come in for stick in the past. Please don't tell me it's headed the same way again.
The 'customer' experience at Roots Hall has always been an acquired taste. Trust me, from one who goes to a lot of grounds, it's one of the worse, and this is my team.
There's not much you can do about a ground where East and West are separate to the point of going out into surrounding streets, but the rest needs a rethink. Is it really impossible now to pay on the gate in the modern age? The computer age protects against the turnstile man pocketing here and there.

Please let the club know about this, email in fao Steve Kavanagh.

Exactly this. He rolled about on the floor and wasted plenty of time but when he was upright he caused us problems. So frustrating watching Coker/Atkinson/Thompson/Hurst (and others) constantly turning inside instead of looking to beat their man. I know JCR didn't exactly have a killer final ball but at least he had pace and knew how to get past a man and into the box!
