Assumption, dear boy. Assumption. How do you know SUFC can afford to pay 4K a week to one player? We tried that ten years ago and it damn near put us out of business! For good! Remember that Football League clubs are wage-capped these days; Southend United can only spend a certain percentage of their annual turnover on staff wages (I seem to remember its around 60%). That's ALL staff, not just players.

Spoke to a mate tonight who has spent a bit of time with Brushy recently, he confirmed what someone said on here a while ago, nobody at Southend is on more than £2K a week. Apparently they thought this would scupper the Ricketts deal as he was on a lot more at Leeds,

Southend are one of the only clubs within Leagues 1 and 2 to have made a profit in the last two consecutive seasons.

Fair point but not true for The Championship, YET!!!
It was something the FL wanted to roll out first in L2, then in L1, just so happens we're now ahead of their calendar for this to apply to ALL Football Leage clubs.

so you can afford to match cardiff then. sod robinson why not bid for koumas like cardiff!. the stupid c***s are 26 million in debt getting into the championship !!!!! you cant afford it just loan it!

the main problem is that it very quicky sets a president to current and potential players, who will look to (re)negotiate a similar contract. that therefore leads to either not being able to get players in for less that 4k because they dont want to be seen as a lesser player, or for our wage bill to dramatically increase, causing longterm problems as we saw in the mid 90s. another problem with paying high wages is that it effects the value of the player. say we want to sell robinson, then there will be fewer clubs interested due to him not wanting to take a pay cut (sticky wages for economists out there!), meaning that we will probably have to accept a lower price for him.

the wage budget is there for a reason, and im sure has been carefully worked out by ron and the financial gurus at SUFC. Whilst i believe robinson is quality and really want to see him sign, i dont want us to break the budget to sign him or any other player (im proud of our current financial stability and believe with it we can attract quality players)
