Great post and welcome to the Zone, TrueBlue14.

Sounds like his spell north of the border was far from perfect but there's a lot of similarities to Adam Thompson, who was fairly average for us but then partnered up with Anton Ferdinand last season and looked a world beater. If anyone can help Kiernan cut out those mistakes, it'll be playing alongside Anton.

Here's hoping for great seasons for both clubs.

Exactly this. He'll struggle to find a better mentor than Anton Ferdinand.

Cheers.

When he first arrived we played him beside Danny Wilson who is roughly the same age. It was widely agreed that both could do with a more experienced partner to bring them on, so we brought in Clint Hill. That never really worked out due to a lot of issues throughout the team, so hopefully Ferdinand can help provide a bit of direction to help him in the areas where he makes mistakes. He should also be coming into his prime and start establishing himself a bit more.

Another factor is under Warburton we played a pretty offensive 4-3-3 but our midfield signings last year flopped and due to being lightweight there, our defence was at times exposed. Playing in a more pragmatic approach might give him a bit more cover to focus on his game. Being away from Warburton will probably be a positive for him as Warburton rarely addressed any areas of concern.

Cheers for posting.

We do know a bit about him as we had him on loan previously and he was excellent. Surprising to see the reaction from Rangers fans though as he really did impress first time round. To be fair though, Cian Bolger was mostly an accident waiting to happen for us and made so many individual errors at one point that it was depressing to watch. He's since gone to Fleetwood, won the fans player of the year and been linked with Championship clubs since. I guess it just doesn't work out for certain players at certain clubs sometimes.

I realise Twitter and forums are never really representative of the fan base, but a lot of the comments and reaction are still pretty classless.

Cheers mate.

Yeah, different players are suited to different clubs. To be fair, despite Scottish football not being a great standard, there's a lot of intangible pressures to being a Rangers player. A lot of media focus, goldfish bowl mentality, expectancy from the fans and teams you face often raise their games for the occasion beyond their normal ability.

Better players than Kiernan have struggled with some of the above previously . So a change of scenery and probably a chance to be entirely focused on football will do him good.

His spell with us wasn't without some positives, as I mentioned above. It's just some supporters see everything in black and white and some of his prominent errors define their view and reaction to him.

why is this bloke pretending to be all sensible and intelligent - I have met Rangers fans ..... they are not like this

Ron has done really well, and we really must be pushing the wage budged now when you look at the squad.. we are going for it this year let's hope they are all " Pulling Up Trees " as the man likes to say...

This sort of reminds me of the Simon Francis situation. An undoubtedly talented player but for us he was prone to a high amount of gaffs and basic mistakes. He matured and obviously ended up being a PL defender. Hopefully with some age/maturity and having gone through a difficult situation and getting a fresh start, Kiernan can focus on the basics and concentration and realise his potential.

I had a go at reading the Rangers thread on Kiernan's departure, but I stopped about halfway through the thread as I grew tired of the more pointless abuse of him. I get the bit about him not doing it at Rangers, and some of his errors appear to have been permanently beyond forgiveness, I get that too. I really didn't understand why we, as Southend fans, came in for some very basic abuse as well. So TrueBlue 14 coming on here and offering up reasoned discussion was really good to see. If any of you other morons bother to read this, I get that it is your board, but some of you really are complete nobs. I though about registering on your site to give my view, but I just couldn't be arsed in the end.

This is a great piece of work by Mr Brown, superb signing.

Once he has settled in and once Anton's hamstrings are as good as they are going to be, and once Hendrie rediscovers his previous form with us and once Demi is as good defending as he is going forward, then we will have a back 4 to rival the best in FL1. Please let that start Saturday lads, my seat in the West has been replaced with a shiny new one and my expectations are rising. No pressure, mind you.

I think I've found the WOW we have all been waiting for. A new seat? Now, that's a megga Roots Hall moment.

I think you're being a bit harsh on Thompson; he was playing very well previously, up until his shoulder (think it was shoulder) injury, so I wouldn't have said he was average before Ferdinand; however he certainly did improve more under him.

All that being said, think Keirnan (hopefully!!) Is an upgrade on Thommo.

Hi Guys,

I'm a Rangers fan. Thought I'd provide a bit of info on Kiernan's time with us as I saw all 76 games he played for us in the past two seasons.

Just to address a few things in the quote above. We have quite a large and diverse fanbase, as is often the case with social media it normally brings out the more extreme expression of opinions. In the stands, our team have had great support on the pitch in the last few seasons.

There isn't a case of his face not fitting or his confidence being shot by fans haranguing him. The way his time went with us was mainly about his weaknesses and failures to improve on them. This exacerbated fans opinions toward him as he regularly continued to make the same errors that cost us but he was never booed or anything when on the pitch.

Just to talk about him as a player, he started promisingly and looked capable on the ball as well as aggressive when challenging. There were some slight hints at problems that would become more obvious as time went on. He basically has a problem with concentration, he's capable of making really basic mistakes in positioning or distribution and this cost us. He also regularly gets caught under the ball at crosses and this also cost us.

He had some good games for us and occasionally against the better teams in Scotland, mainly in the Scottish Cup Semi Final against Celtic and two home games against Aberdeen and Hearts last December. Sadly, he also had a few horrorshows such as the Scottish Cup Final, the 5-1 defeat to Celtic away and 4-1 against Hearts away as well as notable mistakes against smaller teams.

If your management team manage to improve his concentration and judgement of crosses, then he could be a decent player for you. It's just this never improved with us and as soon as our new manager came in, Kiernan only played one game before being banished to train with the youths. There's been recent rumours of him bad mouthing the manager and overacting with niggles to avoid taking part in youth games but how much substance there is to this, I can't say.

Btw as far as I'm aware, the Fulham interest was just a rumour, no contact was made between the clubs and the twitter account quoting the fee you have paid is a guy that posts made up nonsense on a regular basis.

Anyway, hopefully the move works out for you and him. All the best for the season.

Thanks for this mate, a very honest post from your observation.

Phil Brown is quite a good man manager, he's happy to put an arm around a player (and even have a beer with them) but he also knows when to draw the line and give them a rocket up there arse too. Hopefully we'll see the same Keirnan who came on loan to us some time ago.

As for your season, it's good to see you on the up again, make sure you win the title this season. I'm not a fan of Celtic at all, too much sectarianism amongst them........

Cheers.

Good to have a Rangers fan on here, we can swap stories about the infamous and mercurial talent that is Bilel Moshni

Good luck in the coming season

Good post. Lets not go down to there level. We're (on the whole) a good bunch of fans and if anyone comes on the Zone who is friendly, I have no problem with

Is there just a hint of jealousy there SS? Have you got one on those wonderful vintage wooden ones to park your arse on in the East?

Our best eleven will compete with anyone in the league this season. It will all depend on how many times we can get our best eleven out though. On paper we are strong and improved on last season.

Pleased with Kiernan and agree with Brown that the other teams will be impressed with the signing. They won't relish a visit to the Hall this season if we can get our squad fit.

Agreed - unless any other sides in the league are better than us

The comments on the Rangers forum and Twitter from their fans is disgraceful in all honesty. We've had some truly awful players leave over the years and not once have we ever reacted quite like that lot. No wonder Rob wanted out. His face obviously didn't fit with their fans and I can imagine what it must have done to his performances having that lot on your back and completely smashing your confidence to bits.

.

There is an alarming amount of Rangers fans who truly are imbecilic bigots. The fact that he played for Irelands youth team would have made him a target regardless of performance. I'd take absolutely no notice of any "feedback" from north of the border. That club is an absolute joke with a huge number of "fans" constantly fighting evolution.

That's the type of management that will most likely suit Kiernan. In all honesty, he was asked to always play the same way under Warburton and seemed to rarely be given direction or help to cut out the errors that affected his form.

Our new manager came in and Kiernan only played one game under him before getting injured. In different circumstances he might have been given further opportunities but the manager has brought in his own centre halfs.

Think the league will sadly be beyond us. Had the European disaster but more positive pre season results since the likes of Dorrans and Alves came in, so hoping they'll narrow the gap.

We don't always like to talk about Bilel. He arrived in dark, dark times. Overriding memories are in one terrible game against Albion Rovers, he managed to get us a draw by just bundling the keeper in the net and somehow getting away with it. His final game ended up with us failing to get promotion and him then volleying and punching an opposition player.

All the best with your season. Unlucky not to make the play offs last season. Hopefully, you'll push on.
