1955, a 1 0 loss on a mud sodden Roots Hall in the cup against Man City. If it hadnt been for a brilliant display by goalkeeper Bert Trautman we would have won.

Against luton town at the hall. I beleive it was in 1992-3

Collymores last game . I remember brett angel scoring in a 2-1 win.

Cue safety and a pitch invasion

Been going ever since

1-0 win at home against Lincoln in Feb. 2001. Ben Abbey scored the only goal of the game. Ironically I had already moved to Gloucestershire by this time, but I insisted to my parents that we scheduled visits to family in Southend to coincide with home games so I could watch Southend.

It would have been Brighton at home, I think the first game of the same season (possibly last game of the previous season) but my folks were a little cautious of me going just with a bunch of mates at the age of 11.

And Andy Sussex's 30 yard screamer volley into the top corner! (maybe it was 25 yards, the years may have stretched it a bit..). You picked a great game for your first, will always be one of my most memorable games for so many reasons.

1968 Southend V Halifax 2-2 played on Saturday afternoon. Phil Chisnall was southends star player at the time and he scored the first, followed by a player who at the time was a new signing B. Best.
Can anyone confirm Wwas this Billys first game for Southend?

Wolves at home 1986-87 old division 4 ..Stood in west stand next to the angry wolves fans, who wanted to get into our stand, all kicking off everywhere around ground.. 1-0 to blues martin ling header...:Worthy:

It may well have been, he signed mid season IIRC in 1967/68 and the Halifax game you mention was in February. This was the season when we smashed Workington 7-0 and we were in a safe position in the top 4, and almost certainties for promotion. Sadly we didn't win another game and snatched 6th or 7th place from the jaws of promotion.

According to the records, Billy Best's first game was away to Chester on the 27th Jan 1968. He did not score his first goal until his 5th game for us which was the Halifax game you were at.

...and Billy Best won the player of the year award, despite John McKinven & Phil Chisnall being joint top scorers.

I've replied to this one on a number of different occasions. The answer doesn't change, 1956, Man City 0-1 Cup defeat, standing in the paddock with my gooner brother-in-law.

Friday 9th October 1970 - Southend 0 Crewe Alexandra 2 , a certain young Ian Bowyer playing for the visitors.

I can't remember what year it was, possibly around 10 years ago? I think I recall that we were playing Mansfield Town. Sadly the referee that day passed away on the pitch, I believe that it was due to a heart attack so the game was cancelled. Don't know if anyone else can remember when this happened?

Didn't put me off though and I've been pratically every weekend since!

uncle took me to a few games in the early 70's which remain a mystery to me but the first recollectable one was jan 3 2000 lost 2-1 to rotherham (my god prudoe was not a very agile keeper lol) but totally hooked on the blues - see yer all saturday

started with a 3-2 home defeat to portsmouth March 17 1992 as part of 6832. Tilly and Keith Jones were on the scoresheet for us and iirc there may have even been a pitch invasion or two on the night

Won 2-1 in extra time against Bristol Rovers in 2003 in the LDV cup, remember coming to a lot of games after that, and going to cardiff that season too!
