Ref Watch Refwatch ......... Yeovil (H)

Pretty sure Southend Elvis is referring to Lauren Impey who was referree at Ebbsfleet for our match in late March. She was, as I recall, excellent. So not Abigail Byrne then.
I hope you are right, as they seemed polar opposite performances to me. Now you say it I do remember the name Lauren, maybe I'm not as old as I think....

Not for a moment disputing that the 4th official was a useless jobsworth (I first become aware of him when he seemed to make subs warming up in lime green tops that looked nothing like the dark green Yeovil tops, change into red bibs) but I’m curious as to how you think his incompetence actually impacted the game?
He was constantly on the mic to her throughout the game, he strayed out of the technical area several times to interfere with the east stand Lino instead of leaving him to deal with his job, and basically wanted to referee the game from the sidelines, instead of leaving her alone, she must have been confused trying to control the game with him in her ear all the time.

The Yeovil manager seemed to indicate Maher got booked for raising his arms which is absurd
This what it was for- this has already been explained including by Kev as well after the match. Absurd but that’s where we are at, and the lectures about not putting arms up or complaining about decisions is also why the Yeovil manager said what he did. Basically it seems the officials just can’t cope with any criticism…whether this is truly a new rule or made up on the day perhaps our refereeing experts can advise. Seems to me there was a lot of unpunished arm waving in other games…

As has been said the Yeovil players surrounded the referee demanding a red card (it was mentioned she originally had the yellow out?), anyway no action so I assume this rule about surrounding the referee has now changed again and it’s now ok?

As I said before she was poor but largely in keeping with the general standard in this league. It’s quite possible we will see worse…and have done. The nanny state imposed in the technical area certainly didn’t help- maybe she was let down by the 4th official. Who knows….

I'm sure you're right, but he did say the "last one" which was Abigail Byrne. Lauren Impey was a couple of matches earlier. Both were commended on their performances.

I have no view on Saturday's referee, as i was out of the country, other than to say that most officals I've seen over the past few years would have their pay deducted were they in the real world not this supposed "professional" game. Shocking doesn't even get close & I was a sh8te Sunday referee so I recognise garbage when I see it.

As for the misogynistic comments about "it's a man's game" so too fast & rufty tufty for a mere girly to referee would do well to look a a real man's game. Holly Davidson is not only a top women's rugby referee, she has been getting an increasing number of appointments at the mens international level for a while now. In fact in July she refereed South Africa the current World Champions & sent a SAFFA of in 2 mins for a yellow then upgraded to red. She's no doubt had loads of abuse while moving up in a game much more gentlemanly than football but if a woman can referee a bunch of thugs like South Africa then they can certainly cope with the "physicality" of the pansies we watch each week.

Whether the individual woman is up to it can be a moot point but are most of the blokes we see mincing around in the middle either??

The last female referee we had before Saturday was Lauren Impey at Ebbsfleet in March as previously mentioned. Abigail Byrne refereed us at Maidenhead in February. After the Ebbsfleet match we only had male referees. Unless the statistics on various websites are wrong.

Apologies. Thank you for correcting that. I was getting mixed up with the match at Wealdstone which was after the Ebbsfleet match. The Maidenhead match which Abigail Byrne refereed completely satisfactorily was, of course, well before the Ebbsfleet one.

Ref had a terrible game, was conned so many times, and she fell for it..... why can't we do that when they see the ref react that way?
As for having a female ref, I'm really not sure. The last female ref we had, had an great game, took no crap and sorted poor play out as soon as it started, yesterday was the opposite. The reason I'm not sure about female refs in a male game, is there is extra effort to perform well, to show the doubters what they can achieve, so the pressure is increased.
I would have loved her to have a great game yesterday but we noticed what she was doing wrong, and if it was a man making those decisions yesterday, he would have got the same stick.
But they have got to where they are despite their gender, and have no doubt had to outperform their male colleagues to prove that she can hack it.

I really don't think that in the pro game anything can be attributed to the gender of the ref. It is irrelevant.

It was sick a dispiriting experience watching that game with the referee constantly stopping play and running over to the bench for no apparent reason. Yes, she had a shocker, but most of the blame must surely attach to the wretched fourth official who appeared to be trying to referee the game and everything surrounding it himself. I can’t help wondering if he would have adopted such a ridiculous high profile if there had been an experienced male referee out there - it can’t have been a pleasant experience for her.

I agree with you that it couldn’t have been a pleasant experience for her. That said, she only stopped the game because, in her opinion (which is the only one that matters), an offence has been committed and the reason she ran over to the I agree wretched 4th official was because he asked her. I doubt she could hear anything being said on the touchline.

The standard of officials at some games isnt great but this season there has been some improvement.Thankfully we dont have VAR which is working in some games but generally isnt. However at our level we don't have it whether or not the sending off of the goalkeeper would have happened if we had it we wont ever know so we have to put up with the referee on field decisions. From my view from the West Stand it appears the referee had no option.
Concerning the sending off of Kev is a different situation.Again the Referee took instructions from the 4th Official.
So inclusion the Referee had on other option.
Yes football is a very emotive sport and lots of opinions are aroused but concerning Kev bearing in mind he was already on a booking perhaps he should control his emotions better.
We move on lessons to be learned
