Was wondering why his name hasn't popped up in the clear-out news.

As Paterson is still under contract it is more complected, where as the others are just being told that they will not be offered a new deal. Paterson is contracted for next season so if we want to release him we will have to terminate him contract.

Well if is true he is on a high wage and he does not fit into PS plans then lets terminate his contract and move on
I disagree, Paterson is one of the few players we'd want to get rid of that I can actually see another club being interested in buying, we might as well try and make some money off him

Once again this man speaks sense, at least try and sell the guy before going down the non payment / termination, expensive tribunal road.

That was not the impression we got when we raised the subject with tara, when we had our meeting over a few beers in RNA in Prittlewell he made his point so we will just have to wait and see what develops on that front

We can't just terminate his contract unless we go down the road again of not paying him, like we did with McCormack, Barrett, Mildenhall & co. And obviously no one would advocate that. Otherwise we have to pay up the 12 months he has left.

We've been trying to get rid of him most of this season. I suspect we'd let anyone take him off of our hands to save on the wages.

Morning all. Yes, Paterson is back at Southend, a groin strain has stopped him playing the last couple of weeks at County.

He has another season of his contract left so unless someone comes in and buys him out we have to pay up his contract to let him go.

Thought I would have a look at the Stockport boards again and a couple of snippets about him from yesterday:

'As for Matt, he is a hard worker, and his willingness to stay on and help us in our fight to beat the drop speaks volumes for the lad. He will not be without offers should you decide to let him go, he has a heart as big as a bucket and a first class attitude. I really wish the lad, and indeed the Shrimpers all the best for the future!'

'What can I say about Matt Paterson. He has had 9 starts and scored 3 goals and got himself 3 MOTMs and I believe twice into the L2 team of the week! He has the heart of a lion and runs himself into the ground. He is not the strongest player on the pitch but he has a good footballing brain and has really good feet gets stuck in and is determined. His opening game against Bury was one of the best debut's I've seen at County for god knows how many years. His goal that day is still one of my favourites of the season. Very strong displays followed and another sublime goal against Oxford has made him imho one of the best strikers I've seen in this League'.

Some very encouraging words - and we didn't play him because he was on too much money?

Won't get into any arguments about the lad, I think he needs to get away from Southend permanently and has obvious talent to play the game elsewhere.

Agree he needs to get away from Southend, however if there aren't any takers we might as well use him if we're paying his wages!

'gets stuck in and is determined' are not descriptions I would have guessed at based on his showings for us.....

Spot on. Runs about a bit and gives the right signals but does very little on the pitch for my mind. Personally if his wages are as high as people have said they are then I would be happy for him to be shown the door. Sorry to be cruel but there are I think better players out there.

Whether you rate him or not, he has obviously made a big impression at Stockport - the worst team in the Football League, playing against the same teams that we do week in week out. All I wanted for the lad was a run of games - he's got this at Stockport and it was obvious the lad has shown himself to be a good player - more comments:

'Nothing much to add to what fellow Hatters have said about Matt Paterson. I have been hugely impressed by him and his attitude, which, frankly, puts some of our own players to shame. It's a pity that injury kept him out for the last few matches, when - who knows - he could have made a difference...
And he's definitely a player with potential above League 2. If Southend let him go, he'll be another club's gain.'

'he was a great lad always did his best and can't fault him, shame he got injured tho, just imagine what he couldve done if he played every single game. Brilliant prospect for the future for any club'

He's obviously done himself and SUFC proud on his loan - maybe we should applaud the lad (difficult for many on here I know) and maybe Luggy should sit up and take note, or is it really all down to the money?

I for one hope he we do the sensible thing (IMO) and give him another go. 3 in 9 starts for them and 4 in 6 starts for us would cover the second goalscorer to ease the burdon on on Corr that some have been clamouring for, afterall 7 in 15 starts is a pretty decent return. He's got skill and pace, and it sounds like he taken on board the negative aspects of his game and is getting stuck in more and showing a lot more determination.

It's pretty easy when your teams bottom of the league to see the negative in everything and everyone associated with the club (look at the 2/3/4 ratings our players got when things were not going well for us this season for example), so to see a team that's sunk out of the football league for the first time in an age to wax lyrical about a player involved in their failed bid to stay up says a lot if you ask me.

Not sure about Pace and skill tbh. Never really impressd me when ive seen him, perhaps he would be better surrounded by better passers of the ball etc, either way, i think its time to wipe the slate clean, move him on somewhere, and good luck to him.

I never thought he had any pace either, but then at one of the last games he started before he was shipped out (it was a home game) a couple of times he really surprised me with a couple of genuine bursts of pace. Also thinking back, his running against Barnet (JPT) gave them grief all night.

I think your last comment is the one that will come to fruition though, a free transfer, probably to a competitor too, a shame in my opinion. Let's hope we're able to do something with the extra wages his sale/release will free up.

Hatter fan here.

Paterson was simply outstanding for County. Totally committed footballer, with heart and determination and bags of skill. Cannot see why any of you don't rate him!

I and every County fan wish him all the best for the future, and if he ever wants to come back to County we would all welcome him with open arms.
