Peterborough away 1990. Promotion secured so compulsory to get on the fence. That is until the Evening Echo publish a picture of it and your wife sees a picture of her Dad and her Husband drunk and acting like teenagers. Did I care? Not a jot! Great day out, lots of booze and one of the funniest Podge Morgan tales ever...jeez did he perform that day!

Is it the one where he went in a Peterborough pub and spun the landlord a tale allowing him endless free drinks?

Yep. The landlord thought the Jockweiler was on her way to Peterborough to pick up the bill, he got a bit of shock when she rang the pub and told him she was at home with the baby. By then Podge had drunk his own weight in lager. Cor do I miss that fella, he would have been the funniest 60 year old...EVER!

Thanks for posting , great memories and a reminder of the potential the club had back then .Chelsea were on the south was this the game that ended the changing ends behind the West? Big Bill's finest game which resulted in his transfer and probably the reason a second promotion season fell apart

Ipswich, and Norwich in the 50s 60s and 70s where not a bigger clubs than Southend United FC

Sadly we just missed out on the successes at the time just look we was very unlucky

knocking down our glorious South Bank was just another nail in our downfall today IMHO

Only way out if we move and built a 25000 ground stadium

We all love Roots Hall but its a no way we can move forward

Yes this was the game that the club put up a metal gate and fence and a police horse to stop supporters from go from one end to the othe , stupid really because we did not play a team like Chelsea every week .

Still think Roots Hall is an option if the pitch was turned.Would rather Ron come clean and say that FF is now dead and start a redevelopment of the Hall in stages. When you consider the population increase since the 70s the catchment area is there but competition is London clubs, that's why the Hamsters being gifted a ground by the taxpayer was so wrong, the cost of the stadium roof alone would have built Fossetts. Not sure where I read this but when Maplin airport was given the ahead in the 70s didn't the Rubins have plans to make the East a triple decker stand as the Southend areas population was expected to grow by a couple of hundred thousand?

Because success would fill it,and the area could sustain it

Correct a couple of clubs come to mind... Brighton, Reading all with a little success can now fill their new grounds easily

If we don't have any ambition yes a 9000 home capacity if ok then , BUT we only will be a lower league club
