H G Stennett (Henry, but called Harry) was listed as being from the Bath/Bristol area for most of his refereeing career. Previously a head in Bath, he moved to Leigh and was Head at Fairfax before taking a (small) step up the ladder to Head at Belfairs. Died 6 years ago at the age of 96.
Football League linesman for 11 years.
@Mick He was Deputy Head at Belfairs when I first started there. He moved to Fairfax to gain his promotion to Headship. Then returned a few years later to Belfairs as Head Master and I believe ended his career there. He lived in Berkeley Gardens in Leigh.

I had the pleasure of being caned by him at Belfairs, six of the best. I had stuffed those green paper towels from the toilets down the back of my underpants. I got away with it last time and didn't feel a thing, despite my OUCH's. This time he must have sussed something, as the last two he caned me on the top of my legs at the back. The OUCH's were real, as I nearly jumped through the roof. It also left me with cut marks that stung like mad for about a week. Not allowed nowadays of course. The funny thing was is that I was innocent. The lads that did the crime gave my name as I messed about a bit, so it would be believable. I told Mr Stennett it wasn't me, and he didn't believe me. He told me to give a name who did it then. I refused to grass, and got the punishment. Lol.
I definitely feel your pain 😥 back in the day, possibly around 1964 at Great Wakering Secondary School I was given 4 strokes of the cain by a Mrs Blair she hit me so hard and low on the back of my legs that she made the scar on my right leg bleed. Needless to say my Mum was NOT a happy bunny 🤬🤬These days you would get 5 years for doing this type of thing. Did I deserve it Yes more than likely 😀😜😀

Hi, Scunny fan in peace!

My Grandad Harry Johnson played for the Shrimpers for a couple of seasons between 1934 and 1936. Indeed, he was the clubs leading goalscorer during the 34/35 season.

I've recently been going through his old scrap book and I've attached a few photos that may be of interest

I think the first photo may have been taken at the Kursaal Stadium?

I'm pleased to see that your club is now in better hands. We only know too well the damage a terrible owner can do. Hopefully, we'll eventually meet again back in the EFL.

Good luck for the rest of the season

Apologies if this has been put up before, but I do feel its 'of the moment'. Saturday's guest of honour, plus the opening scorer's dad, both feature in a game that had everything (in fact Nelse looked quite sprightly).

Special prize to those who can name the commentator ;

He told us once during a lesson, that he was a linesman in a European cup winners cup game, when Eusebio was playing!.

Southend United 2 v Liverpool 3

FA Cup 3rd round replay. Roots Hall. Wed 8 Jan 1958 at 14:00 UK local time.

The first game was played 4 days earlier on the 4th January at Anfield. It ended 1-1.
We scored both goals, Lol. Ray Smith with an O.G. on 33 minutes. Johnny McGuigan equalising on 69 minutes. The crowd was 43,454.
So Southend United did well to earn the replay.

What was the crowd for this one?

I saw a Chelsea programe , Chelsea v Blackburn Rovers 1963/64 and a H Stennet of Bristol was a linesman . At Belfairs when the school broke up for Easter the masters used to play the school and Stennet used to be referee all dressed in his referee clobber . I remember Trevor Roberts playing for the masters and hitting a great 35 yard goal .

This popped up in Facebook:

It’s easy to work out who we are playing against and when. There were lots of comments about it being rather wet!
