So you mentioning a book about the folk scene 60s/70s and US politics in this great thread is O.K. because another book was mentioned? Even though the book was related as it's about SUFC, as you acknowledge.
Come on Tangled. Play the game. This thread is about Southend United in the past, the photo's, the players, the managers, the club, the grounds, the games, the memories. Don't spoil it and make it about you.
I don't think he is making it about him, he just posted something in the wrong thread (which I'm sure we've all done in the past).

Unnecessary criticism I think.

Come on 70's get off your high horse.you neglected to mention that I'd deleted my post (Notice that a mod .with presumably more sense than you had put it on the right thread without any fuss)

Another one

Edit. Actually appears to be the link to his website. Hope he doesn't mind me sharing it, it's a good read.
The article 'The Story of Past Owners' was a good read but the caption under the photo is incorrect as is a reference to the Rubin brothers in the article. Bill Rubin was the father and the club Chairman before his sons. One son was Tony (big fat moustache in the photo) and if memory serves me the other was Mark?

Here is an article about Mark in 2010.

02 July 2010 11:37

Mark Rubin, son of former chairman Bill, has been interviewed in Friday's Echo and revealed as a member of the consortium that would like to take over the running of Southend United FC. Well, well, well; though it's been discussed on message boards today's interview in the Evening Echo has confirmed the names behind the present consortium that wishes to relieve uncle Ron of his duties as chairman, hopefully before the club goes under.Their spokesman is from a family well associated in Southend's past, one Mark Rubin, the other names being Colin Freedman, Paul Althaesen, lars Steffensen, Gavin Simmons, Rob Stillwell and Mark Gordon. Mark Rubin himself, now 59, also became chairman of SUFC following his father's death, and his family owned the Shrimpers between the sixties and the mid-eighties.Mr. Rubin told the Echo: "We felt it legitimate to gather together local business people of significant strength to be in a position, if enabled, to take the club forward. Its obvious there are inherent problems and only by the skin of its teeth has the club not been put into administration previously. Twice we were ready with funds lodged with our solicitors Jefferies to enable us to move at short notice."Sadly for most supporters there's not much about their future plans but more that they would be a 'safety net' providing much needed sucurity for the football club in it's present state of crisis, we would not be seeing a Man. City type takeover here.Mr. Rubin continued: "We are all football people, but we are also business people. We have very specific ideas on how a club should be run. So far, the club has been run as a property development company with a football team attached. The most important thing is you pay your bills, pay the players and pay Revenue and Customs. What's happened this year with players not being paid would never happen with this group of people who would be involved. We will safeguard the future of the club, but we won't pump millions in. We are looking after something owned by the town."However, Mark does confirm they would pay off any SUFC related debts and make sure the new ground at Fossetts Farm is built. Present Blues boss Steve Tilson would remain and be allowed to build up a first team squad of around 18 to 20 players. The sticking point is, of course, present Shrimpers supremo Ron Martin, who would need to get in touch with them first, and Mr. Martin has said up to now he will not do that.Unless of course we go into administration, votes already for that course in our S24 poll here: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk/polls/loadpoll.aspThen the consortium could step in with a very cheap offer indeed, that's as long as it's administartion and not liquidation, and would work with Sainsbury's as a partner.Being of a younger generation I do not have the baggage I know the Rubin name carries with some, but have been told the sons inherited some of the sins committed by their father Bill, and anyway in our present situation it's not a case of 'frying pan' into 'fire' as the house has already burnt down in many supporters opinion and they would accept anyone as long as Martin goes, and goes soon.We should hear from our beloved chairman again sometime Friday afternoon, whether he mentions this or not we will have to wait and see; but knowing him, and the person asking the questions, probably not, but we can only hope. And if he does, we might not like what we hear!

Come on Tangled, you're a very intelligent guy. You know what you're doing. You have a long history of causing little fallouts. You deleted late on as well. Every few months you throw these little post grenades that upset someone, then walk away as though you did nothing. Butter wouldn't melt, thing. I will leave this up for you to see, and then delete all my posts on this matter.
Calling someone else intelligent is hardly an argument in your defense for what is a clear over-reaction.In any case I'm not as Machiavellian as you make me out to be, I apologised politely for making a geniune mistake. If I withdrew my post my post "late" as you say it was because usually I only go on SZ twice a day at most.

Came across these. All SUFC related apart from the last one, which is a teamsheet from a Borough Comb v District League match.

Hi there—would you consider selling me the Norwich Res programme—it’s one of the precious few I don’t have ?
Just possibly you may have others even ?

Plenty of local legends in that match between the Borough Comb. and the District league with quite a few Great Wakering Rovers legends in the team, George or Gordon(Doug)Hallums, Barry Beadle, Tony Thorpe, Roy Cornwell, Roger Sampson + another who also played later for the Rovers, Bill Pirie. Tony Thorpe's brother Peter played for Southend United Reserves back in the day and was also a Steward at Roots Hall in later life. Roger Sampson sometimes sits behind me in the East Stand (Green Seats) and was one of our neighbours in New Road back in the early 1950's (in the floods in 1953). Roger also had an elder brother Peter who played over 350 matches for Bristol Rovers between 1948-49 through to 1960-61. Looking through the line-ups I think their is a current SUEPA member in there as well. I went to so many of these matches back in the day, just to be able to spend another special night under the Roots Hall lights. "HAPPY DAYS" they were as well.

I sent the pic to Gerry Pudney who is still about , he said it bought back fond memories.

@fbm The ref in the Borough Comb V Southend District must be the Stennett who was Head Master at Belfairs High School for Boys when I was there. His claim to fame, so he regularly told us, was that he once sent Malcolm Allison off!

I had the pleasure of being caned by him at Belfairs, six of the best. I had stuffed those green paper towels from the toilets down the back of my underpants. I got away with it last time and didn't feel a thing, despite my OUCH's. This time he must have sussed something, as the last two he caned me on the top of my legs at the back. The OUCH's were real, as I nearly jumped through the roof. It also left me with cut marks that stung like mad for about a week. Not allowed nowadays of course. The funny thing was is that I was innocent. The lads that did the crime gave my name as I messed about a bit, so it would be believable. I told Mr Stennett it wasn't me, and he didn't believe me. He told me to give a name who did it then. I refused to grass, and got the punishment. Lol.

H G Stennett (Henry, but called Harry) was listed as being from the Bath/Bristol area for most of his refereeing career. Previously a head in Bath, he moved to Leigh and was Head at Fairfax before taking a (small) step up the ladder to Head at Belfairs. Died 6 years ago at the age of 96.
Football League linesman for 11 years.
