Even though it ended in a third round 2nd replay defeat at the hands of West Ham of all teams, we stayed in the 1979/80 Football League Cup until October of 79!

But the game I'm interested in is the first round 2nd leg game against Brentford, August 21, 1979.

Holding a 2-1 lead we won the next match at Griffin Park a week later 4-1 for a 6-2 aggregate win & a reward of Bolton in the next round (we won 2-1 away, goalless at home).

I was at the 4-1 win but bar it being a late summer evening and some very happy Shrimpers in the away end as the 4th goal hit the net, I can't remember much else and can't find any reports on it.

Writing an piece around Bournemouth and Brentford away games I need more info on this particular game to complete the article!

Anyone there, team sheets, old match reports, anything of interest would be useful, did Steve Phillips grab the Bees goal before joining us a couple of years later?

Any help appreciated on the 4-1 win, but if nothing else should bring back memories of a rare cup run for the Shrimpers and an excellent 1-1 draw at Upton Park & 0-0 in the replay at Roots Hall, we won't talk about the next Spammers replay!!

Wasn't at the Brentford game, but was at all three West Ham games. Memories - Ronnie scoring at Upton Park, a Blues fan punching a Hammer at Barking station (his delayed crumple to the floor fascinated me) and my mate Sue going out with Billy Landsdowne (hat-trick hero of the game we do not mention)

Certainly help with teams but really need a report, or at least the scorers.

I'm sure our referee expert Mick was at the game & can see a few other faces but the game itself, bugger all except that, I think, late 4th goal & lots of smiling Shrimpers!

4 goals at Brentford, didn't happen often 😄, but thanks.

Goalscorer for Brentford was Doug Allder and both home and away matches were delayed by about a week? due to us having food poisoning playing at Dover in a pre-season friendly.

Here's the match details from Match Magazine:

The match report from the Echo:

Ha, it was Brentford who got the late goal, probably in one of the four pubs around the ground by then, but thanks all, & those reports have really helped bring the match back to me, how did you find them, google was certainly not my friend in this instance 😆

P.S. A fine Blues side there in my opinion, but didn't we end up getting relegated, mainly due to Cusack & Outlakowski being sold to Millwall mid-season?

I went to all 3 too , with a load of West Ham fans at Upton park stood on The North Bank and my mates fended off any Unwarranted attention we we scored....

Yes we did get relegated that season (1979-80) but Dave Cusack & Anton Otulakowski didn't join Millwall until March 1983.

IIRC they were sold for a total of £40k, which at the time ripped somewhat of the nucleus out of our team?. That was sanctioned by Bill Rubins sons ( i'm sure? ) who ran the club at that time.

Crikey, what went wrong then? Dosen't seem to be a bad team. Again, excuse the memory, but in a Easter Holiday game v Sheff. Utd. we scored a last minute winner & it looked like we may stay up? (I really miss the sufc database 😄)

Was at all those games..Brentford (2)....Bolton(2) and WHU (3)...at the Brentford game before the game kicked off , it kicked off in the away end.
Sadly two of our known lads jumped over that little fence round the pitch and left it up to a few of us the quiet things down

SUFC vs Man city, no idea of the year. @B.B.The Legend Lives On. will probably know all the details.

Nice pitch!
