Had a trip to St Mary's church Prittlewell on Saturday. Very interesting. Had a look at some of the graves of the great and good. As well as Sir William Heygate there was one of a man who was the ship's surgeon on HMS Terror. Whether he was on the ill fated journey is unclear as was his name which was unreadable. So on to find a grave. Loads of people mentioned but I gave up searching for the good doctor. But something caught my eye

Can anyone confirm this is Southend United playing at the Kursaal or the Gray hound Stadium

@WickfordShrimper That is definitely The Kursaal and not the Greyhound Stadium at Grainger Road .

Due to the greyhound track the picture can be dated to between 27th July 1927 and 16th July 1928.

The FA had already stated that greyhound racing and football were 'not compatible'. As you can see from the picture the greyhound track cuts right down the wings and across the corners of the pitch. At a March 1928 meeting the FA warned it was considering action against clubs whose grounds were interfered with by dogs!

Four games were postponed during that 1927/28 season and it was the Football League who stepped in, ordering greyhound racing to cease at the Kursaal.

We've just received from the daughter of our second oldest SUEPA member 93-year-old Jim Thomson (a Shrimper May 1956 to March 1959) these four fabulous pics (we love it when this happens). That's Jim heading the ball - can anyone put names to all the other faces?
And in the header shot, might that be Jim scoring v Liverpool in the FA Cup in Jan 1957?
I might be going up to Scotland next Spring - if so I'll be popping in to see Jim, he's a top man to talk to, loads of memories and he may well have some more pics. Thinking of doing some voice recording sessions with some of our oldest Shrimpers otherwise at some point those memories will be gone forever.

You’ve got to love the FA. Greyhound racing started at Wembley Stadium in 1927! It was staged there for nigh on 70 years (my family were regular visitors).

That to be fair is some photo, the agony and the ecstasy ... and love the close positioning of the photographers

Match report from the Jan 1957 game v Liverpool doesn't mention the winner was scored from a header.
Thomson didn't play in the 3-2 home replay defeat to Liverpool.

Stamford Bridge had a greyhound track before it was redeveloped and The Shay in Halifax had a speedway track. Don’t know if there were any more. White City where QPR played for a bit was also the home of Athletics. I guess it depended on whether the track impinged on the size of the pitch. The views from behind the goals at those grounds were rubbish as you were so far away from the action.

Eastville stadium.. Bristol Rovers old stadium was multi purpose with greyhound and speedway racing. I think Watford had a flirtation with greyhound racing too but the bends were too sharp. The old Kursaal picture is the only time I’ve seen the track go over the pitch.

I’d forgotten Eastville.
