We usually like to see wins on this thread, but I'm making an exception here for two reasons. First it shows what sort of very decent Stand you can have in 6 months that holds 6000, should that happen at Roots Hall in the future. Secondly, it was a great comeback after being 3-0 down. I actually forgot that Phil Holder was Peter Taylor's assistant.

One of my first ever away games that.

Came back and then Alan Pardew pops up with an injury time winner. Was gutted on leaving the ground.

Was a very different Valley back then.

Definitely doesn't look like the Ernie who took over as manager a year or two after that picture. No idea who it is though I'm afraid.

interesting - any idea who? it was titled thus.

I think I have worked it out. Ian McKechnie was at Southend for the 64/65 season ( when he played in every one of our 51 games ) and the 65/66 season. Alvan Williams who was manager at Hartlepool took over in the summer of 1965. A coach called Peter Gordon, also coached at Hartlepool - I’m guessing that Williams brought him with him. The photo therefore would have been pre season in 1965.

Gordon played for Exeter between 60 and 62 and thus is a photo of him at Exeter. Could this be the same person?

Wiliams didn’t think much of McKechnie - he kept dropping him and playing Ray White and eventually brought in Trevor Roberts.

If my memory serves me well ( this could be pure fantasy though- I’m sure someone will confirm one way or the other) Ian was indirectly a major factor in our relegation. Peter Watson our centre half had his jaw broken in a pre season friendly - I think by Mc Kechnie. He only played 3 more games before he had to retire with double vision. Watson‘s last ever game was away at York on Oct 4 - our only away win of the season.

...
Could well be, although he's aged quickly in those 3 to 4 years. Working for Alvan Williams probably.

I remember Peter and Gordon from the mid 60s but have no recollection of Peter Gordon.
