Home Programme 1934 v Aldershot and 1948 v Charlton. Don't recognise any of our team for the Aldershot game and the only one in the Charlton game was Les Stubbs. In 1952 we sold him to Chelsea for I think £10,000..In 1958 we signed him back for 2 seasons.
Born and buried in Great Wakering he ended his playing days with Great Wakering Rovers and remember him playing against Rayleigh Town at KG Fields probably 1967 where he still showed his skills. My brother ogshrimper played against him that day.
His granddaughter works in my local Waitrose.
Note that No 7 for Blues Res v Charlton Res was cricket legend Trevor Bailey. He also played for Walthamstow Ave, winning the FA Amateur Cup at Wembley in 1952 and then being part of the Ave. team which drew 0 - 0 with Man U at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Fourth Rd. (per Wikipedia!)

Roots Hall Model.jpg

Model of Roots Hall created by John Le Maitre in the 1980s. The collection appeared on an episode of Blue Peter in 1986 and consisted of all 92 football league grounds plus Wembley all handcrafted by the artist.

Looks like the whole collection was discovered in a storage locker a few years ago and was auctioned in 2021 with the successful bidder paying £19,000 for the lot.

You can browse the entire collection here:

How are the players top and bottom of the right side picture? The other four a legends

Struggling a bit with the top one. Like anyone else who saw every game that fantastic season, I think I can recall pretty much all of the players. It looks like the name ends in a "Y" which would mean Beesley, Bentley (elsewhere on programme), Lindsey or Riley. Doesn't really look like them.

I'm pretty sure the bottom one (upside down in the picture) is Chico (signed Ian) Hamilton.
As to how he is, I've no idea ! :Winking:
Thruogh facebook I got incontact with a guy whos wife was a friend of Chicos wife .He said that Chico ha a villa in Spain and stays there a lot of the year . I did mention to him that the exSouthend wanted to get in touch with him . Since then a Southend guy says he lives not far from where Chico's villa is and knows the health club that Chico is a member of was going to go and see if he could get in touch with Chico .

I love it when old random games just pop into my YT. Still the greatest season and best memories in my opinion. Arguably we should have won the league that season. And a reminder how those in the west moved from one side to the other depending on which way we were facing.

Thank you! I couldn't begin to tell you the efforts we've made to date, so far without any success, to get in touch with Chico. Certainly spent several hours doing it, would've been quicker to catch a flight to Spain. 'Chico' even now comes up as one of my default words on auto spelling.
If you think it would help I can send you a message to pass on to your friend to send to Chico's wife? Just PM me if that is zn idea and we can sort it from there.
Cheers, Andy

Good spot! Coincidentally, earlier this week I finally tracked down former Shrimper Terry Kent whose one game for us was in 1959. Terry was one of those rare folk (tho more common back then) who played both football and cricket at pro level and he mentioned that when phe played for Essex CCC Trevor Bailey was in the side. Terry is pictured here in his 1961 Essex whites, perhaps 'white' was his colour as he is in the 1959 SUFC squad pic that I posted up on SUEPA Facebook this week whichbis the season 'Thd Blues' wore white. 20231208_101259.jpg

Great memories, bought my Hi-Tec shirt in the morning of the game from Bell Sports and wore it proudly that afternoon. What a day.

PS - shirt still fits me, just 😜

I went to Fulham away in the early 90s but must’ve been a different game to this one as I remember standing on the away terrace in the snow

We usually like to see wins on this thread, but I'm making an exception here for two reasons. First it shows what sort of very decent Stand you can have in 6 months that holds 6000, should that happen at Roots Hall in the future. Secondly, it was a great comeback after being 3-0 down. I actually forgot that Phil Holder was Peter Taylor's assistant.
