Just don't understand this at all. PB said earlier in the week that one deal would defo be done by Saturday. This clearly is McLaughlin. Why then is this affected by us trying to sign a defender? Surely the deal for McLaughlin must be all but done and we still need him, plus a striker let alone another defender

Doesn't fill you with confidence that one deal gets suspended to bring another in. Why not do both at the same time, we don't do anything quickly do we!

Clearly down to finance. If Bolger is out I would think another CB must take priority. I liked what SM offered as a player so hope that move still happens at some stage.

Can't be to do with any budget we have unless it's to much paper work for the behind the scene staff that we don't have:'(

All the playing staff should have been signed by now and all and a good pre season with three new team, we should not need to go out and get another defender we should have ample cover on all areas Browns had enough time to complete deals over the summer!!

I like SM but why are we trying to sign another midfielder when our top priority should be a striker(that can score goals) not a expensive injury prone Hunt!! We must have more midfielders then Chelsea.

I think it's going to be a long boring season!!

And we're still interested in McLeod......................yer 'avin a laugh! I've stated before that one is never quite sure what is causing the delay in signing players, is it; bumbling and indecision by PB; just the complications in getting deals done; finances? These latest tweets from CP would appear to strongly indicate the third reason and if so it's the most worrying news this season. We have a pretty small squad and already, after four games, we have two key players out for an unspecified amount of time. I understand the need to prioritise a central defender but we aren't talking of signing one, we are talking of SIGNING ONE ON LOAN..............so how the hell does that make a difference to bringing McLaughlin in? If we are that strapped for cash, then what on earth has been going on with the Bentley transfer saga? (if we are in serious financial straits, that surely puts the reasoning behind fbm's ecellent post yesterday, in a new light). Unless of course, the offers from QPR were not all they seemed to be. So, not only do we have a pretty threadbare squad but we may also have a keeper who is miffed that he didn't get a move. (Chris Phillips ‏@CJPhillips1982 18 août Basildon, England
Phil Brown: Dan Bentley will be disappointed if he misses out on move to QPR). I'm sure Dan would not let that get in the way of his professional duties but it probably doesn't help.
Not that I'm one for over dramatising a situation:winking:...........but for whatever reason (umbungo, severe financial difficulties), this is devastaing news. We are desparately in need of at least three or four signings and we are having difficulties just bringing one in. Failure to strengthen the squad will surely have consequences and is going to make it that much harder just to maintain our place in League One. Worrying and disappointing.

Wouldn't signing Adam Thompson solve the problem (if he's fit)?

Even if Thompson had signed a new deal, we'd still only be left with two fit centre backs in Barrett & Prosser.

If I was SM though, I'd be a bit annoyed at this. If he was "set to sign" before Saturday's game, then we delay it, I'd be annoyed. He has already missed three league games and one cup game this season as he isn't in the Forest squad, and I'm not sure how much more time he wants to miss.

If we want him, just sign him up Brown, as the likelihood is we will want him before the window shuts, so strike whilst the iron is hot so to speak.

Oh! If only life were that easy.............especially in 'Southendworld'............I'm sure however, that Phil feels your frustration.

Why have we jumped to conclusions that the McLaughlin deal is taking more time because of anything to do with SUFC? The transfer situation at Forest is rather unique at the moment, and I would hazard a guess that the delay is likely to be at their end.

When CP says deal has been "superseded" by the need for a centre back i don't personally think it is unreasonable to assume its us not Forest that are causing the issue. Why would our loan issues slow down Forest.

We must be in trouble if we can't sign two players at the same time....

Are we possibly reading too much into this? Perhaps it is simply a resourcing issue - if, say, Steve Kavanagh has to do all the final negotiations maybe he hasn't got the time to spend getting the McLaughlin deal over the line if Phil urgently wants a Centre Back in time for tomorrow and he's got to negotiate with three separate championship clubs/players/agents etc.

Paul Clark was spot on last night. He said Leonard throws them high in a loop, which is too easy for the defenders. He said he needs to throw the ball flat with pace, like all the best long throw specialists.

This isn't news though , everyone has been saying this for months and months and months and months - and nothing has changed.
