And of course both Tilson and Webb played with targetmen anyway.

As for who Sturrock is brining in - one of Akinfenwa or Harrold, please.

Ant ' mate you can keep saying this till your blue in the face it doesn't change the fact that I don't like what I see on the pitch. It IS different to how we have ever played. It's ugly. Uninspiring. Will drive people away. Will drive me away. Is driving me away.

You think Harrold would want to come back here after the abuse he received from the 'fans' during his last stint?

I gave him some grief recently on twitter about that tackle on Mohsni a couple of seasons ago. He complimented me on my good memory but reckons he didn't make contact. Not sure he would come back but he could do a job for us.

This club is as close to the brink as I can ever remember it being. I simply don't believe that we can afford to be picky about the style of football we play. Our best hope is to get out of this league, and the person with the best chance of getting us out is Luggy. We don't have time or money to seek out and put in place a realistic alternative. So if you don't like what you see, and feel the need to walk away so be it. The survival of our club is far more important at the moment than playing attractive football to satisfy the fans.

Well I'm not going to argue with that, but I will say that driving away the few hardcore fans we have is probably not good business? I can see attendances dropping below the 4000 mark this season.

Akinfenwa would be fantastic here. We'll be losing Assombalonga in a week or two won't we? And Belford? Would the wages from those go on Akinfenwa with potentially a striker going the other way? (Benyon) to sweeten the deal.

Short term pain, etc.

And I hope I'm not being too controversial if I make the point that it's the one's who stay who can call themselves hard core, not the ones who go. People stop going to football matches for a multitude of reasons. The majority of twenty-somethings who go attend regularly will be occasional or non-attenders by their forties, kids, mortgages, got bored, new interests, moved away... What is important is to get this club into the new ground (and I still believe that Sainsburies will ensure that happens) and up to a standard of football that attracts and keeps the fans. History tells us that isn't League 2, it's at least League 1 and hopefully the Championship. And if that means playing **** football to get up, bring it on.

I'd like to keep Assombalonga for the rest of the season as he looks like a real prospect at this level but I would also love to get Akinfenwa here as he'd compliment all our other strikers really well and he'd also score goals.

Thinking about it I'm assuming Akinfenwa would cost a fee? As for the lack of pure football it will be a bitter pill to swallow but if Luggy's style gets us into League 1 then brilliant and I'm not totally ruling it out as things stand but not being too critical my gut instinct is this season at least we won't quite manage promotion.

I've not had the pleasure of seeing them this season. I saw them in the friendly against Spurs and the team were playing passing football. They were playing it badly but they were playing passing football.

It sounds like Sturrock is going to move us back to playing longer from now on. Meh. I prefer to not but lets face it it is what half the clubs at this level play. I doubt Northampton were knocking it around for fun this afternoon.

We're not paying anything towards Belford or Assombalonga's wages.

Akinfenwa wouldnt be a bad addition as big and strong but didnt we have him in for training when PS first joined and his wage demands were to high, cant see it myself unless its a loan deal.

Tubbs on loan from Bournemouth would be awesome he not getting a game now Barnard there - we can dream

Not a hope in hell of Tubbs, besides which he's not a targetman. My money's on Akinfenwa.

I would like to see that:winking:

for what its worth, with Sturrocks style of football I am surprised we have never been linked with him before. I think he would be extremely effective for us and would be a real fans favourite

We have been, he was very close to being one of Sturrock's first signings two years ago. Only reason he joined Gillingham was because Ron couldn't agree terms after Akinfenwa stated in the press that he wanted to join Southend.

For all those of you praising Sturrocks call for a 'target man' , that's fine , and maybe we do need one.
But please remember what you wish for and don't come on here in a months time saying the football is 'direct hoofball' and you wish we played better football.
We have Harris , Benyon and Eastwood as strikers who like the ball to feet or in the channels , and who have barely had any game time between them yet this season and I don't really understand why ( apart from Eastwood ).
We can't say they're not working if they're not on the pitch ?
Cresswell scored yesterday and won us our first point , but putting a centre back up front rather than try recognised strikers is IMO a sign of desperation so early in the season.
We all want points and wins , but if last seasons comments on style are to be repeated , then that is not going to change anything - in fact it is likely to make the style worse.
As I say , maybe a target man will help , but then don't be surprised at why we never play the ball on the flloor and the sudden disenchantment of Spicer.

Yup, spot on.

I do agree with the sentiment of this post. However last year we were playing Dickinson as the targetman and this isn't his game at all. How he came in for so much stick last year was beyond me coz he was not being played to his strengths. To get the goals return he did was admirable.

Akinfenwa on the other hand is a natural targetman and IMO more of the aimless punts upfield would actually stick with him up there. Add to that he always scores goals wherever he goes I think its a no brainer if we can afford his wages.

It goes below 4000 then we are back where we started 98/99 season full circle!
