national league

A lot of the clubs in the NL see the latest offer of help as more of a loan which puts them even deeper in debt so would rather scrap the season ....we can only hope there's enough of them

So, if the worst happens and we are indeed relegated to the National League, here is a somewhat sobering thought.

Since relegation and promotion between the Football League and the National League was increased to two up, two down for the 2002/03 season 33 clubs have lost their EFL status. Three (Barnet, Macclesfield and Torquay) have managed this twice.

Only 25% of these teams have managed to regain their Football League status in under five years:-

1 - Bristol Rovers, Carlisle, Cheltenham, Shrewsbury
2 - Barnet, Leyton Orient, Torquay
3 - Tranmere
4 - Oxford
5 - Exeter, Luton, Mansfield

This suggests roughly a 10% chance of bouncing back at the first attempt!

Of those who have taken more than five seasons to regain their membership less than 20% have managed it so far!

6 - Grimsby, Lincoln, Macclesfield
8 - York
9 - Cambridge

The following 19 clubs have so far failed to regain their status following their most recent demotion:-

Aldershot, Barnet, Boston, Bury, Chester, Chesterfield, Dagenham & Redbridge, Darlington, Halifax, Hartlepool, Kidderminster Harriers, Macclesfield, Notts County, Rushden & Diamonds, Stockport, Torquay, Wrexham, Yeovil, York

Something to think about!

17 NL north and south clubs have released a statement asking for them to not fulfil fixtures until the outcome of the vote is known.

Clubs are going to start going under soon

Good work BD. I actually make it more than 33.

Do you have the figures back to when the one down automatically started in the 80's?

Most clubs that have made a statement so far in the NL have stated a wish to continue.

Resolution 1 will pass.

NLN/NLS will stop. NL will continue.

What if just a few clubs refuse.....Plus from what i'm hearing players may refuse if certain things don't improve. One group of players had a vote one wether to boot their manage out the other night.

I’m not sure about that unless they get the minutes from the meetings that went on from the start of the season most chairman feel betrayed also it’s about Covid testing and safety there’s more to it that’s going on,
The scenario of clubs just not carrying on will put a stop to the Lge in my opinion

Any NLS/NLN club that wants to stop will vote for resolution 1. So they're not forced to play against their will. Likewise, any NL side that wants to continue will vote for it so they're not forced to stop against their will

What about the NL sides that don't want to continue?....You cant force someone into debt and possibly make them fold because you want to continue.

Exactly and there’s at least 6 clubs that will not take on dept at all.... the vote means nothing the only way it continues as a campaign is if the government change it to grants not loans these clubs wouldn’t have started the season if it was loans so why would they finish it with them, it’s chaos and it’s all going to kick off

It is sobering when you have it laid out like that (well done BD). I'be been saying for a long time that there's virtually no difference in standard between the NL and L2, so its like trying to get promoted from L2 when there's only two spots available. Not easy. Most clubs who drop into the NL have a very tough first season, usually lower half, before they stabilise. You'd like to think we would eventually rise to the top (after a few seasons I mean) as we would be one of the 'big' clubs in that league with bigger crowds & hopefully a better budget than most, but its far from guaranteed I know.

Two a year for 18 years and three "duplicates" gives 33. Where did you find your extra ones ?

The last team to fail in their bid for election to the Football League was Enfield at the end of the 1985/86 season. Automatic promotion and relegation (one up, one down) was then introduced for the following season. This remained the case until the increase to two up, two down from the 2002/03 season to date.

During this period three teams (Northampton, Exeter and Torquay) escaped relegation because the grounds of their prospective replacements (Kidderminster, Macclesfield and Stevenage) were deemed below standard.

This resulted in a total of 13 teams being relegated to the National League during this period. Of these, only two (Lincoln and Darlington) managed to return to the Football League at the first attempt. The number of seasons taken to return by the 10 who made it back were:-

1 - Darlington, Lincoln
2 - Colchester
4 - Barnet, Chester
5 - Doncaster, Halifax
9 - Hereford
16 - Aldershot
25 - Newport

The remaining three, Halifax (again), Maidstone and Scarborough, have never made it back! In fact, all three sadly had further troubles in the following years!
