Most talented Blues player you've ever seen

Collymore - The complete striker had he had a level head would be put down as one of the all time greats..

Marsh - Mike Marsh oh blimey how good this guy really was, worth every penny of the £500,000

Powell - Legend at Southend and possibly one of the most solid, consistant left backs in his time..

Whelan - Amazing feet, incredible talent, remember one really incredible freekick outside the box, amazing.

Otto - Was just so talented, really had everything a winger wanted..

Another vote for Sammy McCrory. I remember him scoring against England while a Southend player despite Duncan Edwards trying to keep him in check. After that Stan and Chris Powell equally.

Jesus, Sam McCrory he stopped playing for us in 1960 I wonder how many other fans we have that have been going for over 50 years. Can't think of many apart from Norman.

Whelan - until he became our ****E manager - think it overshadows how good a player he was for us...

Stan, Freddy, Marsh.......

I am only 67 !!! I saw my first home game in 1947 and since around 1955 I have seen most home games and also a fair number of away matches. Sammy McCrory stands out because he received his international call up whilst still a Southend player. He had a rare partnership with Kevin Baron another favorite of mine. When he scored against England I didn't know whether to cheer or cry. I seem to remember reading that he had been wound up by Duncan Edwards who kept sledging him calling him and "old man" and how satisfying it was to score as a result.

He was decent I suppose and at times you could see he'd played a higher level.

He always looked more solid with Newman though and had Tinkler settled I don't think he would have played as many games as he did.

Me as well, saw Sam play in my 1st game against Man City, lost 1 O . Was prehaps one of the best Southend teams ever had. Barron, Hollis, McGuigan, Lockhart and many others, but Sam McCrory was in my opinion the best of them all

Surely you're talking about the wrong Whelan? Unless I grossly misinterpreted things, all the praise in this thread was for the footballing genius of Ronnie rather than Phil....

Stan
Peter Taylor
Anto Otulakowski
Colin Morris
Chico Hamiltion
Chrissy P

All players on the up

Players who were great before they came to us
Ronnie Whelan
Mike Marsh
Eddie Clayton
Eddie firmani
And probably the best of the lot (but before all bar cricko's time ) david Jack
(on his day the most expensive player in the world )

Didn't bother saying it as most people here probably hadn't heard of him but Eddie Firmani was pure class. He joined us at the end of his career in mid 60's but had more skill than most we have seen at the Hall. Saw him back heel into goal from a corner and tight angle and another time when a keeper gave a short goal kick he just hit it first time back into the net from 30 yards. A real crowd pleaser.
