Most talented Blues player you've ever seen

If we're going old skool, it's gotta be Harry 'The Hitman' Halse - didn't he score about 600 goals in a season? (Obviously that's an exaggeration, but it was something like 91?)
I must have to much time on my hands. Quite right Harry Halse, signed from Clapton Orient. Playing 64 games for Southend he scored 91 goals, before being transfered to Man Unt for the princely sum of 350 pound

Imagine what Man Utd would be paying for a 91 goal player these days! Harry - a legend.

Based on natural gifts I'm going:

1. Stan Collymore
2. Ian Benjamin (had he the natural gift of pace he would have played for England IMO)
3. Ricky Otto
4. Paul Byrne - the natural gift of drink and flab put paid to him though
5. Freddy Eastwood

Stan
Peter Taylor
Anto Otulakowski
Colin Morris
Chico Hamiltion
Chrissy P

All players on the up

Players who were great before they came to us
Ronnie Whelan
Mike Marsh
Eddie Clayton
Eddie firmani
And probably the best of the lot (but before all bar cricko's time ) david Jack
(on his day the most expensive player in the world )

Oo yes Colin Morris! Can't believe I forgot him. He was probably the most exciting player we had in my first (and most prolific, attendance-wise) decade as a fan around '75 to '85. Could skin any full back at will, inside or out, cross or cut in, plus scored a good few goals. I seem to recall Sheff. Utd. then at Championship level breaking their transfer fee record to sign him, & everyone thinking he'd sold himself short. Think he came from there anyway.

Personally I like Mark Gower but CM was like Mark on his best days, and he never seemed to have off days. Ah memories...

Ronnie Whelan, i can't believe we once had a centre midfield of Mike Marsh and Ronnie Whelan albeit only for a few games, I think!

I'm afraid not. Whelan signed Marsh after he picked up his bad injury on the first day of his first game of his spell as Player-Manager. Whelan never recovered from that injury so they never played with each other (although I'd guess that they did at Liverpool).

Whelan's managerial spell I think tends to lead people to forget just how good he was when he played for us. Ok, he couldn't run but he could certainly pass the ball.

1) Stan Collymore
2) Ronny Whelan
3) Freddy Eastwood
4) Mike Marsh
5) Ricky Otto

1) Stan Collymore. My first game was his last, but the man should have been a top england international. Bad time bad attitude? Certainly not the case when he was with us.
2) Ronnie whelan. Dont know the stats but i bet he has a few top flight medals in his bedroom dresser. Class for us on the pitch shocking off it.
3) Chrissy Powell . Stayed as loyal as any player could at a club like southend. Time after time he could have goneand probably should have been sold earlier. Geniunely nice fella aswell.
4) Ricky Otto. The bloke just beat people for fun , but unlike JCR actually could score a fantastic goal and he set up a **** load.
5) I am going to be controversial here. Seeing as the title says most talented ever seen i am going to say Neville Southall. May not have been anywhere near his best whilst with us , but it is fair to say that during the 80's and early 90's was ranked as the best keeper in the world. He may even have one european footballer of the year i seem to recall?

There are loads who should have been in the top 5 but the memories of them were tarnished by events after or before leaving ala Eastwood.

Mine are a bit of a composite mix of everyone else's:

1 - Stanley Collymore
2 - Freddy Eastwood
3 - Colin Morris
4 - Andy Ansah
5 - Mike Marsh

And on Tommy2Holes lines of thought what about John Burridge? He was fantastic too, and was in a lot better nick than Southall when he played for us.

Spot on there mate, I would add John Burridge (albeit a loanee) and Billy Best, maybe not the most gifted but easily the best goal scorer I've seen in a Southend shirt.

I'm not trying to mend fences here after me and Thomas had a little spat, but he's spot on with this one. Yes, Nev was fat and a wee bit useless when he played for us, but he was, in his day, the best keeper on Planet Earth.

B.A.G in 2holes shocker LOL.

Even though Nev was past his best i remember being geniunely in awe of the man when he made his debut at brentford. Pulled of a fabulous save if memory serves to earn a point. Also played in the 5-0 defeat away at carlisle where it would have been 10-0 but for some world class saves. Moved very well for an extremely big man and would love to see someone like him training flavs/collis.
Incidentally i also remember big Nev playing in a mid season friendly at home to everton when we sold the Angel to them. He got slaughtered by the north bank and just took it so well. Top top man and a truly world class player in his day.

Sorry to go back a bit,but for me Sammy McCorry just edging out stan the man

Can we have a bit more info for us young 41 yo's please :hilarious:

Jeez this is tough ! Top 5 for talent over 35 years of watching.

Morris, Otto, Gower and now Black
Parker, Phillips, Cadette, Crown, Angel, Collymore and now Barnard
Moody, Prior, Paul Clark, Prior again and now Liptak :p

Another vote for Sammy McCrory. I remember him scoring against England while a Southend player despite Duncan Edwards trying to keep him in check. After that Stan and Chris Powell equally.

1. Stan Collymore- By far the most talented player in the clubs history
2. Mike Marsh-Skillful player but had no ambition should have gone much further in the game
3.Anton Otulakowski-Really skillful player scored some spectacular goals, then we sold him to Millwall with Cusack for no reason. Neither wanted to go!
4.Freddy Eastwood-Without him there would have been no double promotion or beating Manu
5. Ronnie Whelan-Forget his disastrous time as manager it was a priviledge to have a player of his quality playing for Southend
