Mark Molesley

For those who claim MM actually wanted to play ugly football, think this is a good read...

For those who claim MM randomly changed from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 for no good reason, this is a good read...

The signings MM did make were dreadful as was the football (if you can call it that).
In MM's defense we had an awful reputation at the time, I doubt who we signed was his first, second or even third choice, we were signing players who wanted EFL football but had no one else interested in them. Maybe if we had a manager with contacts it would have been different but MM had links to Bournemouth and that's about it.

I’ve always found it strange that MM started out playing an idealistic, purist’s style of football with us then after a few weeks changed to play a style of football so negative and dour even the likes of Allardyce, Pulis etc wouldn’t resort to it. Both styles were terrible to watch and were unsuccessful. Ultimately a more pragmatic middle ground would have been better then these two vastly different approaches.

I really felt for Molesley, he was sold a dream and was an up and coming manager. That dream was shattered shortly after walking through the door. His hands were tied with his inability to sign players and he was left with some absolute dog ****! Players who were good enough but wanted out and some players who should’ve left a long time ago.

The atmosphere on the dressing room was toxic and something that has only just been ironed out now by the excellent job done by Maher, Currie, Bentley and Stan.

Yes he was allowed to bring in players but he was struggling and scrapping the bottom of the barrel at times. He brought in some good players on loan with the likes of Olayinka, Taylor and Cordner. Remember Hobson was also our player of the season and look alright in the league above.

He was the right manager at the wrong club at the wrong time! I do not understand this dislike for the guy who wanted nothing more than for the club to succeed. I’d much rather have had him for the final few games and start of the next season than Phil Brown.

But it is what it is! That’s in the past now and we have got the better deal out of this. I genuinely think it would’ve taken a miracle to have saved the club last season. I don’t even think Maher at the time could’ve done it. The club was rotten to the core! Luckily all those who seem to have been the root cause are now with P45 in hand and the club seems to be on the mend.

I wish Molesley all the success in his career and hope he does bounce back against everyone except us!

All except the owner!

Yes and it’s not even close.

It’s why Molesley has a job and Brown doesn’t.

Molesley inherited the worst side in Southend history. Under Bond and then Campbell we’d won 4 out of 35 matches and been relegated. We’d conceded 85 goals in 35 games. What little talent there was was then sold off, first in the January window under Sol (no replacements allowed) and then under Molesley, who was only appointed what should have been 2 weeks into pre-season was then allowed to sign just two players - a 20 year old who had never played a league game but has since been an ever present under Maher and a loanee winger, who having beaten his man once too often was then cynically injured and never played for us again.

Unsurprisingly we lost our first game 4-0, a result that bookended Brown’s spell as well. But whilst Molesley lost his first game 4-0 to a team who was up for it and from there on we showed steady progress for Brown it was the opposite and we got more and more disorganised ending in a 4-0 humiliation to a team who didn’t get out of second gear.

Molesley was far from perfect - understandably from a rookie in his first full-time job - but under him we improved. He showed he could coach and organise what had been a rabble, to make a team that had conceded 85 goals in 35 games keep clean sheets. Under Brown we just went backwards. Whilst the embarrassing performances under Molesley were at the start, with Brown they were at the end (although nothing compares to that shambles v Col Ewe) with games like Chesterfield, Solihull, and against a winless Aldershot where we were gifted a lead but still managed to throw it away against a truly woeful side, who sacked their manager soon after.

He benefits from the lowest bar of all-time but Molesley was better than the 2 managers who preceded him and the manager who succeeded him. Thankfully Maher outshines them all.
This aged well……

Yeah but we’ll see how long that lasts. His last two stints in English football have lasted 16 and 32 matches and 8 and 12 matches at his two clubs in India.

Barrow clearly haven’t done their research: they thought we were unbeaten under him last season!

Let's see if MM lasts at the end of the season ;) I don't think he will. Aldershot will get rid.

I am sure he did at the time but he had no previous connection to the club and once sacked probably didn't give us too much more thought. He and his numerous helpers had ambitions to manage a league club - they weren't up to it and we paid the price. Thank goodness we have the current management team in place now.

Will last longer than Moseley will at aldershot. Don’t see why everyone is so defensive of him he is a crap manager and has showed his negative football at southend and aldershot. He has probably done worse at aldershot than he did at us somehow. It’s got nothing to do with his bad hand he got at us it is his negative football that lets him down.

Move on mate, he's nothing to do with us now.

Fair enough, provided you say the same for negative comments about Phil Brown.
Willingly. As for Brown currently people are commenting on his latest move. When it comes to picking over his previous spell with us my view is the same as with Molesley. Done, dusted, move on. By the way, my posts in this are as a ordinary poster not a mod.
