Breaking News Macauley Bonne Signs

Those highlights are very impressive even through my very, very raki filled rose tinted glasses here in Crete.
Seemed to be two footed & if he's 5'7" then I must be at least 5'11" & 3/4.
Looks like a talent gone very much gone to waste.
Should be a real threat at NL level & if the 3 amigos get his head right could be a real find. Let's just hope he doesn't need the Healing Hands of JG too much. 😇😇

This guy a finisher and I wouldn't be surprised by the end of the season we have 15 plus goal season striker on our hands. He only 28 and has played at all levels in the EFL. Moncur and bonne should have plenty of fun at this level considering how poor some of the sides are in the National League. Our squad is starting to shape up now. Play offs are looking real possibility now.
Plenty of fun........unfortunately they are also likely to be kicked off the pitch. The defences are not up to much...but they know how to kick a player.

Very good signing on paper - has a great goalscoring rate at this level, has scored goals all the way up to the Championship, and is in his prime years. Could be a very astute signing if it works out.

I'm always mindful of players dropping down the divisions, especially when it has happened as quickly as it has for him. Has he lost the hunger and drive? Maybe, and we'll soon find out.

Similarly, it could be that things just haven't gone his way in the last couple of seasons. He said in his interview that he's been "moved from pillar to post". Perhaps he just needs a fresh start, an arm round the shoulder, and somewhere he can get settled and enjoy his football again, just like Moncs.

Most of the good players on their way up who were playing in the level below were gone by the time we were able to do any serious transfer business. We now have to wait for the well to replenish with this season's gems. In the meantime, this feels a fairly low-risk solution for us, and if it doesn't work out then he leaves at the end of the season, and we'll be able to have an entire summer transfer window unencumbered to replace him.

We are delighted to announce the arrival of prolific striker Macauley Bonne!

Bonne joins us on a one-year deal with a Club option and will wear the number nine shirt at Roots Hall.

Having been born in Ipswich, the forward was in the academies of Ipswich Town, Norwich City and Colchester United, signing his first professional contract at the U’s.

While at Colchester, Bonne would play with current Blues man George Moncur, before he joined Leyton Orient in 2017.

There, the striker enjoyed the most successful spell of his career. Between 2017/18 and 2018/19, he scored 45 goals in 90 appearances as Orient were promoted back to the EFL.

The season after, he netted at a ratio of one in three at Championship level for Charlton before doing similar for Ipswich in League One in 2021/22.

Last term Bonne spent time at both Gillingham and Cambridge, and the 28-year-old arrives in Essex fresh and ready for the challenge ahead!

He said: “I’m really happy to be here and crack on. I’ve been in today and trained with the boys and it’s a really good group, so I’m really happy.

“It’s been me my whole career, scoring goals. The last couple of years haven’t really gone to plan but I spoke with the manager and hopefully I can get back in the swing of things and back to scoring goals in a league I know really well.

“I’ve done my own training here and there where I can. I thought my fitness would be a lot worse off than where I was today, and if I can get 90 minutes or one minute, I’ll be grateful to be back playing.”

Head Coach Kevin Maher added: “[Macauley]’s got a proven record in the National League and has played higher up so we’re really pleased to have someone of his pedigree in.

“He’s at an age where he’s still got loads to offer the Club and the team. He’s not been playing but he’s kept himself in good shape, so we’ll look at how we get his football fitness up to speed.

“He’s still got the desire and the hunger to score goals and he wants to be part of something successful, and that’s the most important thing.”

Welcome to the Club, Macauley!

Bonne could make his debut tomorrow evening at home to Eastleigh.

Is it me you’re looking for?

The only good season he has had were in this division. He is proven at this level and should be comfortable out there. Great signing.

Oh, another one of our cast-offs. Good player 5 years ago. Far too mobile, strong and industrious for the Conference when we got promoted. Shadow of that player in recent seasons. Career has gone down the drain since his beloved Ipswich refused to sign him on a permanent in ‘22. Absolute w**ker of a bloke.

How do you know shadow of that stats or seen him play?

Charlton supporting pal saying if he comes without his huge ego and we can get a tune out of him then he’s a hell of a signing

Did say he expects him to be a bit controversial and can be very difficult character to manage

Sound like anyone familiar 😉

The stats tell their own story, but no I’ve seen him play for both Gills and Cambridge. Nothing remotely resembling the player I watched at Orient. I’d recommend asking Charlton fans about him the most - the reason why they withdrew a contract offer and let him go instead is particularly amusing.
