You probably remember it as The London.Tavern in the town...used to pop in the often coz i lived in a flat in Weston Rd.1977-78 times.
Remember one saturday night i was sitting by a small round table alone reading the Classified football results (Evening Standard) and two drunk Irishmen walked in and then started to fight each other, doing 360 degrees scuffling around where i sat(i refused to move). Then finished their drinks and walked out arm in arm!!
Does anybody remember some time, mid -late70s i think, when the police arrested a paddy in the Tavern pub and handcuffed him to the Police mini PANDA car (remember them?)
So the drunk picked up the back of the car and started pushing it away down i think was York Rd??? It was in some of the national papers.
Some real dodgy pubs about those days

Possibly. He was well known in Southend by the older fraternity. I never got to go around to his home, so never met his other half. He liked to have a little gamble if that helps. Can I ask - are you referring To John Flint that was married to Jeanette

I liked John. We got on well. I bet he helped you out, Lol, he was a very tough man. We used to take turns to pick up and look after Arthur Gibbons, AKA The Pier Master, after he got beat up and robbed of his casino winnings one night, going home from the Garons Casino.Yep that is John Flint. He was my uncle and helped me out a few time
Pub was shut a while back now, their resident (now exiled) darts team played against my lot Tuesday evening. Thanks Al and Jackie. I only went there once and didn't stay for long but the memory of it just came into my mind for some reason and I was curious as to what became of the place.
Here's another ... the Cork and Cheese down below in the Vic Circus development. I haven't been there in years. Is the pub still there?

Plans - The Ship in Leigh (Image: Newsquest)
LONG-awaited plans to transform a derelict Leigh pub dating back to the 1800s will go ahead after winning backing from Southend Council.
The Ship, in New Road, closed back in 2017 and has remained empty ever since, becoming a boarded-up eyesore.
The East Anglia Pub Company was initially given permission to transform the pub into a 15-bed hotel in 2019, but revised plans were thrown out in December last year.
Concerns were raised by Southend Council that adding balconies would cause “irreversible harm” to the character of the pub.
Now balconies have been removed, the plan has been given the green light and work can start.
Peter Wexham, Liberal Democrat councillor responsible for the Leigh ward, welcomed the news.
He said: “It had permission quite a few years ago but it seems there were a few problems.
“So, it is good an agreement has finally come through.
“It needs to be done as it can’t be left as an empty building. It is also better than it being turned into flats.
“There aren’t really many places to stay in Leigh like this. A hotel is needed in the area, so that will be nice.
“It will be a place for people to come and stay and see what Leigh has on offer.”
Plans will see a 15-bedroom hotel, all of which are to be provided with en-suites, alongside a small restaurant /lounge area for guests to use.
The current building will be extended to the west site on the ground and first floor levels and a new section added to the second floor.
The new proposal was originally rejected in December over fears the first-floor balconies would “result in the loss of original historic features, detrimentally impacting other historic detailing”.
Bosses have since revised the plans and have omitted the two balconies to bedrooms six and seven from the application.
The officer concluded: “The reason the refusal of the previous application has been overcome.”
Thought this was intereresting. Some welcome good news.Used to stay at The Grand back in the day.
