Lost pubs in the Southend area

Nobody has mentioned the Golden Lion yet surprisingly, so I will.

Originally built in 1901 and closed in November 2008 after falling into disrepair and of course was a favourite amongst Shrimpers until it was turned into the designated away pub. Suffered a couple of shall we say suspicious fires shortly after closure.

First pub I got served in (under age *cough*)

Had that courtyard garden (with a little pond or am I imagining things?) which then led to the large reception room and bar out the back.

Purchased in 2011 and is now of course a Porsche/VW spares store, with flats upstairs I think and to be fair to the owner, he did restore the place very nicely and at some serious cost.

But a big loss really and would be good to see it back to its former glory serving thirsty Shrimpers/Away fans one day. Especially now our long term future looks to remain at RH.
Used to prefer the Golden Lion to the Spread back in day. Went there for a sharpener before getting married in St Marys in 1975!

At that time the Palace Hotel was owned by Ivor & Stephen Burstin, Motel's sons. I worked for Stephen between 89-90, bloke was a complete loony tune. Ivor was the brains, who at that time also owned Burstin Travel & Travel Avery.
'The Long Bar' was the Teddy Boy's & Greasers hang out on a Sat night in the 70's.
Tangled - wasn`t the Long Bar where we got harassed by some young teds at a gig

Unless I've missed it, the Nelson seems to have been forgotten, probably for the best although I spent many happy hours in there when I should have been at work in one of the many office blocks that occupied most of Victoria AVE in the 70's and 80's. Strange that given its position near to the ground, the Nelson seems to have played a small part in pre or post match drinking compared to the Lion or the 'Spread.

The Long Bar. Pier Hill.
Think it was in The long Bar that I nearly got my head filled in back in the 70's.I was dancing backwards from the bar when I collided accidentally with some Ted with huge forearms (must have been working on a building site).Fortunately he seemed bemused by my excuse & apology that I was just enjoying the (rock n'roll )music.

I seem to remember some objection to us non-teds liking rock and roll despite us being several years older - `why are you listening to my music?`

You could be right, it was a long time ago.Anyway remember the guy's mate (also a Ted) teling me that I'd been lucky,as only a few night's previously his mate had duffed up someone "over nothing".He certainly looked the type. :Winking:

The Woodmans Arms in Thundersley closed late last year. The brewery are still deciding what to do with it. They said they may open it back up as a gastro pub, despite local rumours that it will become a Tesco Express.
