Lost pubs in the Southend area

Hi Rob. This is from the Southend Echo.

Said to be Southend's best-known real ale pub, the Cork and Cheese in the Victoria Plaza shopping centre closed its doors in 2007.

At the time, landlord John Murray said trade had dropped during the Victoria Plaza redevelopment scheme, which disrupted trade. With the subsequent ban on smoking in public places looming, the landlord decided to call it a day.

The pub was later demolished.
This is what the area that was the Cork & Cheese looks like now, it’s a childrens party venue.
However the doors looks very similar to the old doors of the pub & were open when I walked by the other day & the stair case down to the lower bar is still in situ.

The Britannia ('The Brit') along the seafront was our first underage drinking pub. They would serve us there when we were 16 no problem, some of the other pubs were more difficult. This was c. 2004/2005. Now a fish and chip shop.

The Esplanade on the seafront.

The scene of many a night out after home and away games back in the day.

The nightclub side in 'The Cage' was always an interesting night. Plastic glasses only for obvious reasons but they sold bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale!

I've seen people go to the bar to buy one with the sole intent of cracking it over someone's head.

The bouncers were legendary with 'Big Phil' in residence, a lot of people used to get taken outside never to be seen again :Takethat:

Golden Goblet became the Rusty Bucket and is now MacDonalds.
I used to play for the Rusty Bucket on a Sunday back in the day. The team was managed by the brother of the sadly recently departed Ken Clarke …blimey that brings back memories!

I've got a feeling that when it first opened the Joint and Jar came into being as a themed pub called The Bier Keller.

The Railway Hotel in Nelson Streeet is another sad casualty.

Were you related to Johnny Flint? Nothing bad by the way. He was my friend.

Nothing came close to Quills,(Eddie Quills place) now Chinnerys. The Quills were a famous boxing family from the East End. They also owned the Blind Beggar. Every summer Saturday without fail there was trouble. They kept running out of bouncers. It was the summers in the late 70s, early 80s, when about 50 coaches used to come down from London and surrounding areas on a Saturday early in the day. They parked in the Seaway car park. They were here for stag and hen outings. Beano's, a pub crawl. Getting extremely drunk and ending the night with a huge brawl seemed to be the aim. It was coach party v coach party, or coach party v locals. Some would just steam into the bouncers. That night that quite a few got glassed when a coach load from Bermondsey and another from South Tottenham clashed(It was in the echo), it spelt the end of glasses. Plastic from then on. It really was like the wild west. Quills was the main disco on the seafront itself. Free entry. No dress code. Closed at 2am. So after the pubs were shut, the day trippers all headed to Quills to carry on drinking.
