Lost pubs in the Southend area

Was that named after Motel Burstin the Palace Hotel owner and I'll add the Long Bar talk8ng of the Palace
At that time the Palace Hotel was owned by Ivor & Stephen Burstin, Motel's sons. I worked for Stephen between 89-90, bloke was a complete loony tune. Ivor was the brains, who at that time also owned Burstin Travel & Travel Avery.
'The Long Bar' was the Teddy Boy's & Greasers hang out on a Sat night in the 70's.

Some places I remember BITD… mainly hip hop, funk and rare groove nights

High Society (Southend Seafront)
and
Hadleigh Suite (Next to ‘spoons London Rd Leigh)
When I was at Seevic 89-91 there were loads of parties in the Hadleigh Suite. I used to ore load on the bus there.

Always thought the the Ship was all right (remember their Fri eve.folk clubs well).
Used to go there when Val Bates & Ron owned it, around 23 years ago. It was a decent pub then, many customers were descendants of the 'Old Leigh' fishing families & many knew each other, which gave for a good atmosphere.
Regular quiz nights on a Saturday had the place packed ( imagine that in the 70's! ), & i preferred that to the other pubs in The Old Town.

I quite liked the Ship. The Smack(Ye Olde Smack) was popular at the time, but I preferred The Ship.

The Long Bar. Pier Hill.

It's a long while since I've lived in the Borough/City but I had a memory (from where I know not quite why) of a small pub on the arterial road just east of The Fairway junction and before the Progress Road junction. It had a bar on the right which had a pool table in. I went there in 1979 but don't recall seeing it for many years since. Was it called 'The Fairway'? I tried looking it up on 'the google' without any clues arising. Do any older 'Zoners recall it?

The Queens hotel was great. They had a talent night once a month. It was hilarious. Think of the worst of the worst in X Factor, or Britain's got talent. Every now and again someone with real talent performed.
The Galleon Disco down stairs at The Queens was a great disco . I met my future wife down there on the 12th Feb 1972 .

Yes it was named after him, my mum worked for decades for his son Ivor Burstin and became the manager of the Palace.

Ivor use to own Princess Air as well, a small airline with flights to Jersey from Southend airport

You may have known my mum Sandra

Tavern in the town...used to pop in the often coz i lived in a flat in Weston Rd.1977-78 times.
Remember one saturday night i was sitting by a small round table alone reading the Classified football results (Evening Standard) and two drunk Irishmen walked in and then started to fight each other, doing 360 degrees scuffling around where i sat(i refused to move). Then finished their drinks and walked out arm in arm!!
Does anybody remember some time, mid -late70s i think, when the police arrested a paddy in the Tavern pub and handcuffed him to the Police mini PANDA car (remember them?)
So the drunk picked up the back of the car and started pushing it away down i think was York Rd??? It was in some of the national papers.
Some real dodgy pubs about those days

Nobody has mentioned the Golden Lion yet surprisingly, so I will.

Originally built in 1901 and closed in November 2008 after falling into disrepair and of course was a favourite amongst Shrimpers until it was turned into the designated away pub. Suffered a couple of shall we say suspicious fires shortly after closure.

First pub I got served in (under age *cough*)

Had that courtyard garden (with a little pond or am I imagining things?) which then led to the large reception room and bar out the back.

Purchased in 2011 and is now of course a Porsche/VW spares store, with flats upstairs I think and to be fair to the owner, he did restore the place very nicely and at some serious cost.

But a big loss really and would be good to see it back to its former glory serving thirsty Shrimpers/Away fans one day. Especially now our long term future looks to remain at RH.

It will never come back as a pub Smiffy. First of all it was dead in there apart from match days. Secondly, the consortium are going to improve the bars in the ground, and do the fans thing in the car park, which looks like including beer.
