Jeremy Corbyn's Labour

Home already. After the predictable Bank holiday Monday washout, we now have some glorious sunshine on the Tuesday.

No Bank "holiday" Monday here, though we did come back to an impressive May Day demo on Sunday evening, around Plaza Cataluñya.

Back on topic, I see the new great leader says Labour won't lose any seats in the local elections on Thursday.

I do hope his crystal ball is accurate.

I went out posting leaflets locally yesterday - the local Labour councillers are deeply worried about Thursdays vote.

Someone I'm relatively close to sent me a whatsapp message last week, and we ended up talking about politics. Just to give you her background, she has been arrested twice in her life: once for possession of speed, and once for protesting at the M11 extension in East London many years ago. When she was at university she was a member of the socialist workers party. (She used to laugh at me for how right wing I was!) She also spent time on a kibbutz in Israel, where she met her now husband.

Anyway, these are extracts of a couple of her messages:

I have only ever encountered anti semitism, anti Israel sentiments and terrorist sympathy from the left who deem themselves to be the liberal [sic],

She then went on to call them:

Self righteous

And carried on:

From Socialist worker at 17 [and for a long time afterwards], I fully embraced the more centre-right...probably when I discovered Israel...and I voted Tory at the last election!;)

Ok, so one person is hardly a big sample size, but it does show that there are a number of people being put off the Labour party by their racism, and their inability to get a handle on it.

(Just to really annoy some people, the reason she messaged me originally was to ask I would act as a trustee for a trust she is setting up. Since her parents died she has inherited some money that she used to buy a house. The house is being put in a trust, the beneficiaries being her kids. That way they won't pay any inheritance tax themselves when the time comes! I said yes...)

No it doesn't.It does show that it's an issue for you (though, I think we all knew that anyway, thanks).

I disagree. This is an issue for me, but also for a number of other people. That number is yet to be quantified, but one thing's for sure: burying your head in the sand won't solve anything.

I guess the first thing you have to do is acknowledge you have a problem before you can fix it. It seems you're in denial, but at least the Labour leadership don't seem to be anymore.

There are two enquiries into this issue currently underway. One internal to the PLP and the other external.

I'm not "in denial" about anything but I'm confident that once these two enquiries have been completed and their findings made public, this media created "issue" will fade away.

Nope, you're in denial. The Labour party has a problem, and brushing it under the carpet as a non issue won't help. An independent enquiry should show that certain undesirables need to be eviscerated from the party.

Hopefully this will fade away because the Labour party will change based on any findings and people will then realise that the Labour party isn't the soft touch that it currently is.

Precisely. The colleague I have mentioned earlier in this thread is fuming at the state his party is in at the moment. If someone who was a party member for over 30 years is this angry about it - assuming he and londonblue aren't the only two - then it strongly suggests there is a problem. One can argue about how severe that problem is, but the fact that there is a problem cannot be denied.

The media doesn't create Racism...ignorance does.

and there was me thinking it was Livingstone who took it upon himself to tour the newsrooms to spout his bile to anyone who would listen, but all along it was Murdoch and the hated tory press!
It's a good job we have *** and yourself putting us right on this, otherwise I would just believe what I read in the Corbyn hating press.

Is this a truth, or is it because you hate the idea that people are (generally) unsupportive of the notion that he knows what he is doing, that he is Prime Minister material, or that he is little more than a maverick with a cult following?

Seem to recall you felt the same way about Miliband before he was trounced in the GE last May.

Guess we'll find out soon enough.....

and when they dump Corbyn (which they will very soon) he will say exactly the same about the next labour failure as leader.

And that terribly impartial BBC (no nasty right-wing press there to blame for Labours misgivings) are predicting a loss of between 100-200 local council seats. We shall see.

You clearly didn't read this quote from The Guardian:-:winking:

"Rallings and Thrasher are academics who specialise in council elections and, in an article in the Sunday Times (paywall), they said that recent council byelections suggest Labour is on course to lose 150 seats."

We will see.

Hopefully you don't buy any of those rags.:winking:
