I believe that Luke Hyam is the first to be told surplus to requirements at Roots Hall and to find a new club ....

Good, outside of Ridgewell he’s been a terrible signing possibly one of the worst of the current lot.

According to the morn8ng press Sol hopes to bring in Emmanuel Osedebe from Macclesfield

Midfielder. Good to see there’ll likely be some changes to the squad in this area. Also someone who currently plays at L2 level, so presumably no issue playing there next season.

Interesting that we are going after a contracted player and not a free agent.

I actually like Hyam, on his day, I think he can do the dirty stuff out on the pitch in the kind of role previously held by Timlin and Deegan, which none of the others seem to have the vaguest idea about. Trouble is, of course, that he is rarely fit enough to do so.

I really wanted Hyam to be a success here, but he hasn’t shown any signs of being anything other than a bit part player. I guess fitness is key here, but when played he has been off the pace and hasn’t offered anything more than what we already have.

I always thought Hyam was the sort of player you brought on if seeing a game out. He would try and play keep ball by forever passing sideways and backwards. So when chasing a game and going forward, absolutely useless. I would also say he probably ran half the distance in the rare 90 minutes that the likes of Timlin or Will Atkinson type midfielders.

So did Kevin Maher. It turned out that if you had a Mark Gower for Maher to pass to he looked twice the player. Like Milligan who plays a similar role, those types of players will look a lot better when they have players who are available for a pass and can do something with a pass.

Hyam's problem though was that he was never fit.

Hyam was typical of our recruitmment under Powell - up to the level technically but always a bit part player at previous clubs . Similar profile to Lennon, Kiernon - but as time has gone on the reason why they were not regulars can be seen.

I reckon the hairband and rolled up short show a lack of self confidence and an attemp to bluff a personality when in fact you are scared of playing in front of crowds and would rather phone in a hamstring ..

a shame really but professional sport requires mental toughness and some don;t have it ...

of course if I was manager and coaching him he would have become the new Alan Ball ;-)

Dont confuse injuries followed by lack of match fitness to mental toughness.

His first league game was the season opener at Home to Doncaster.....The most one sided first half you ever likely to see. Forget the half way line, they couldn't get it further than 35yds. The reason was mainly Hyam and Mantom won every lose ball and gave it simple to a fit and playing well Kightly (see first line of post) and McL.....Or rolled it forward to Hopper and Cox. There was a decent young lad at CB who won the headers from their goal kicks which also helped....Harry Lennon, wonder what he is up to these days.

Later on two impact subs came on in Barratt and Theo and played well but we missed far more chances in that game than Doncaster created when the put 7 past us a while back.

Then we gave a sloppy gaol away by not dealing with the first ball, fell asleep from a throw for their second and then looked like a poor unorganised Sunday side with no organisation for their 3rd......

Still at least we don't do that any more.......creating lots of chances I mean.
As for conceding 3 goals in a game you never should.....You only have to look at the 2019 league table to see how well we have excelled in that department.

Maher was twice the player. Yes he learnt not to lose the ball, meaning he would go sideways a lot, but he did try the threaded forward pass when it was right. He also never stopped running, and he scored about 1 in 9 games for Southend. Not too bad for a midfielder. You don't see Hyam thread a forward pass, and you don't see him bust a gut without the ball, unlike Maher.
