Jade Goody - RIP

Four pages of the usual with about 5-6 posts that create decent argument. This time I come down on Lord Footballs side. Jade Goody is a no mark who applied to a television programe and got lucky. I can imagine the producers thinking. We have the camp guy, the lesbian, the token black and the token Asian. Thats the bloke with a limp and the hansom fella taken care of,oh and the wannabe model we just need the thick bint with the big mouth who will make a prat of herself by trying to be normal. Now let me think, BINGO!! And shes an Essex girl, even better as the jokes are doing the rounds at the moment.

I grew up on a rough estate, my father was a builder my mother a pump girl. My playground was burnt out cars and delapidated buildings. Petty thieving was a way of life by the age of 7. I could barely write my own name at 8 years old and I was bunking off at 9. I wasn't any different from most of the kids from that area.

35 odd years on and I'm working hard, no mortgage, making sure my daughter don't take the path I almost went down and growing old disgracefully but within the law. Apart from the cancer bit just where is her life and upbringing any different?

I crawled out of the rut by hard work and determination not by getting lucky with acting the idiot on reality TV that just shows tosser wannabes craving for fame because the viewing public of this country are as shallow as the worthless clowns they are watching.

Now we are being subjected to watching her final weeks/days for financial gain for her kids and no good husband who will be going straight back to jail as soon as she does the decent thing. The cynic in me still thinks she might just make a recovery if that white witch has paid her a visit recently, I really wouldn't put anything past her.

A very close friends father died of cancer 3 years ago. Nobody cared, nobody wanted his photo or opinion, nobody cared for his wife, kids, grandchildren because he was a decent hardworking man who died coughing up blood and gasping for air while his son held him close and his wife and daughter cried helplessly in the corner of the room. No cameras, no magazine payout, no television air time.

As Lord Football said, what a shallow, sad breed the human race has become.

I have singularly failed to see how this low life has got herself such a massive media following.
Calling her a lowlife because her obvious lack of intelligence is a bit harsh Lord.
She is/has made money by doing the best she can with the resources she has. Is there anything wrong with that?

Its a shame she is dying, its a shame anyone dies and you dont have to read all the stuff about her if you dont want to. Whenever I see her picture I immediately switch off and my sympathy would rather go to the soldiers who died in Afghanistan today. People are born with a certain level of intelligence which is not their fault, doesn't mean they are low life.

Maybe if the time many people spend reading about so called celebrities and watching them on TV was instead spent with their own families and friends, people they actually know, then when the time comes and they have to say goodbye to an actual loved one they can do so knowing they made the most of their time with them.

I'm not going to pretend to have an overly high opinion of Jade Goody, or a particularly well formed opinion on her at all given that I avoid stories concerning her wherever possible, but she's not the problem in this instance.

The fact is that there's a large section of the media who stand for nothing other than a combination of the whim of their proprietor and whatever they think will shift copy. If Jade Goody wants to sell footage of her dying breath then I've no doubt whatsoever that there'll be media outlets only too keen to buy, and a sufficient audience out there to make it commercially viable. I don't deny either the media or the reader of that stuff the right to exist, I just happen to think that it doesn't bode well for us as a nation when somebody previously seen espousing racist filth on national TV can become the poster girl for "bravery" almost overnight courtesy of her publicist. The stories are going to appear - that's a given, but by no means are we forbidden to challenge them or question the motives.

Agree. What I'd add though is that the written media will "shift copy" only if we buy it. If Jade Goody, or any other similar non-entity, is on the front of a newspaper then I don't buy it, simple as that. It's nothing personal, just that if I don't want to give up my precious spare time reading about their inane lives. I just don't have space for it. To do so would render my life equally inane.

People who feel the same will buy that newspaper though. They may buy it half-asleep in the morning or without really thinking about it or because it's the newspaper they always buy, but they buy it. I'm afraid that this country has the kind of media it deserves.

By the way, can you be "on deaths door"? I'd say you were at it.

No Steve, there isn't. The issue isn't so much Jade Goody - I've actually no quibble with the woman. This isn't her fault, it is the people who write the stories and sell her stories.

She will be gone soon, and no doubt someone else will replace her as the next media sensation. I hope its Irate Ian personally......

Watching sport all day must be a hard life. ;)

Tell me about it H. This is a very difficult time of year what with the start of the flat season and the culmination of the national hunt season coming up. Plus the tennis season is hotting up nicely, then you've got all the Aussie stuff in the mornings.

Tough times.

"Earned her way" don't make laugh. Gets on BB and is very stupid is hardly the bedrock nor the example we should be setting those who are starting their way through life. In fact she epitomises a lot of what is wrong with our society, which is full of people who think they can get something from nothing. And that is one reason why society fails.

The media does not reflect popular opinion, that is niave in the extreme. The media sets popular opinion. Remember David Beckham, darling one day, kicks an Argie the next and there are effigies of him being hung in East London. An obivous example of how the media form public thinking.

If the media had seen her, and her kind, for what they are, I reckon society would be a better, and certainly, more intelligent place.

You just keep reading your copy of Hello to keep you up to date with what is laughing known as the real world.

PS little pathetic dig about "lefty whingers" didn't go unnoticed, btw, but then you knew it wouldn't.

I don't read Hello and your castigation of "society" is little more than a 6th formers view on some kind of Utopia.

We all create society - you can choose to live it or not. I listened to Radio 4 today and not once was there any mention of Jade.

People find what they want to out of life. For every Jade, there's 20 Jon Tickles, all ekeing out an existence on the edge of celebrity, but making do. Who are we to judge how they earn their money? Who are we to judge how our kids aspire?

In the 60s parents were aghast about the Rolling Stones of the world, nasty brutes setting an example of lewd behaviour. Guess what? The kids all settled down and lived normal lives.

You of all people should know that Britain doesn't really have an industry anymore- manufacturing is dieing on its arse, the City is a shadow of itself. If people can make money out of acting the fool, why it is no worse than the role of the court jester.

ps we are after all talking about a human life - one no more precious than any other, but just played out to a bigger audience. In a nutshell, that's all it is. As a libertarian we should let people live their own lives. Eventually, society rights itself.

Yes, she is a media freak but she is also a mother of two young children who will grow up without her.

Look on the bright side - at least her kids will grow up not being taught how to be a racist numbskull. Unfortunately, I suspect they will be well trained in terrorising taxi drivers with knives...

Kind Regards

I dont think it matters if its Jade Goody or the Queen dying of cancer in front of us. its the fact that she is dying that turns a lot of people off.
How many people have watched a stranger die or had no emotions when a loved one has died.
Death is the final stage of out life and we are all going to have to go through it, however nobody talks about it. We talk about everything else but yet death is a more taboo subject than incest, beastiality and other such low life subjects.
So is it the fact that a D list celebrity is dying slowly in front of us, or just the fact that people do not want to accept death and the emotions that goes with it.

Yup. Same goes for people who complain that their once-favourite TV programme/band/comedian is living on it's/their reputaion and not trying anymore. Withdraw your cusotm, hit them in the pocket and encourage anybody who feels the same way to follow suit. If they can make money whether they put in the effort or not then there's no need to really, is there?
