As I recall, Garner was the designated stand in keeper but the crowd reaction when he took the jersey was so negative that Spud went in goal. It looked like a good call when Garner put us ahead but after 2 Cambridge goals, due in some part to Spud's height, Alex Smith went in goal while Spud went back on the wing in an attempt to save the game.
@Elmsleigh shrimper Ah. Thank you. It was Smith not Booth. I don't remember the bit with Garner initially looking like he was going in goal. Clearly a better memory than me. :Thumbs up:

Sunderland was an insanely good day but I feel like voting for a last minute relegation survival that we should’ve never been in is a bit crap. Man U will always be my goat. Just the most incredible night watching little old us, with Tilly at the helm, coming out on top against Fergie, Rooney and Ronaldo. It was class and I watch the dvd back more often than I care to admit.

Thank you to the 224 voters who have taken part so far - your interest is much appreciated

We still have a couple of days left for anyone else to vote - or you can always change your vote. Like one or two have said, as fantastic as it was on the day that Sunderland match, which currently sits in sixth place, seemed to be the catalyst for a long downward spiral and so throws a doubt as to whether it really is an 'iconic' match choice.

Anyway, thought you might like to see the top ten to date sorted in order:

1. Man U 185
2. Newcastle 141
3. Liverpool (1979) 130
4. Bristol City 98
5. Spurs 97
6. Sunderland 74
7. Brum 68
8. Stevenage 56
9. Norwich 48
10. Brentwood 47

Just bubbling under are Col Ewe with 44 and Millwall with 42

Interestingly (well, to me) I have just five (including the top four) of the above top ten in my own choice

I'll let all know which matches in the end we use for the prints and how many etc

I always think of the Aldershot 10-1 very fondly as a) there weren't many (1,281) of us in attendance b) we forget how good that team was & c) we got a decade or so of singing "You're so sh!t you must be Aldershot!".😁 Happy days.

Appreciate you can't have every game though. 😊
Remember I went to that game alone and stood in north bank. Can’t remember who shot but a shot whistled past my head, hit a steel upright behind me, ricocheted back and hit me on the back of the head, knocking me down a few steps…..I remember the game therefore for a couple of reasons…..

Not on the list but Tony Bullock getting sent off for Macclesfield I think it was for clapping the referee and then launching the ball into the East Stand.

Also our game verses Mansfield where Mike North passed away should be remembered for me. It was a sad occasion but the resulting game was the (and still might be) the only football league game played after the season has ended and given special dispensation. Mr North's family attended the rearranged game and all proceeds went to his family.

Has to be Wolves in 87 for me, the atmosphere was banging, 10,000 odd there but felt so many more, I miss nights like these.

Great game. A Ling header I recall. Superb.

I think it was the 1st year of a new thing called play offs. Wolves just missed automatic promotion & then lost to Aldershot (who were promoted) even though they were miles behind in the points total. I remember thinking that wasn't fair.

Well, the results are now in, and it's perhaps no surprise to see that Man U match at number one.
We will now use this to help us determine which matches will be selected for the match prints SUEPA is funding and will be working on with Football Stadium Photography to provide to our club to brighten up an area in the East Stand - lots of work now to do.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the poll and to Shrimperzone for letting us do this on your platform - we will keep you informed of how it all turns out re the prints.

You cannot argue with voting but come on guys, who didn't vote for the (second) first ever match at Roots Hall in 1955?

A game being played for the first time at our historic home, a home that was built by supporters and a win against Norwich City too!

You cannot get more iconic than that!

Great poll though and all of those games are memorable for different reasons.

The 4-0 v Newcastle was the first time I ever truly believed we had made it as a football club. I felt we were dead certain to make the top division. We totally played Newcastle off the park that day. So I look back on this game with both pride and dispare in equal measure at what we've now become. For that reason it has to be the Liverpool 0-0. Every one I knew was at that game including my mum.

Didn't the West Hame game get 96 votes?

I agree. The Wolves game was fast, furious and pulsating. Paul Clark was absolutely brilliant that night. His never-say-die performance literally held Southend together at a time of relentless and incredible pressure by Wolves to get back into the game. Jim Stannard was also not far behind Clark in terms of his contribution to the Southend victory.

Very hard choice

Between beating Fry’s Brum or Fergies United - it’s a bit of a cliche but atmosphere at those games were electric.
Agreed - that brum game was immense and full of vitriol towards the fat *******!

There’s a circus in the town!
