@Elmsleigh shrimper Ah. Thank you. It was Smith not Booth. I don't remember the bit with Garner initially looking like he was going in goal. Clearly a better memory than me.As I recall, Garner was the designated stand in keeper but the crowd reaction when he took the jersey was so negative that Spud went in goal. It looked like a good call when Garner put us ahead but after 2 Cambridge goals, due in some part to Spud's height, Alex Smith went in goal while Spud went back on the wing in an attempt to save the game.
Remember I went to that game alone and stood in north bank. Can’t remember who shot but a shot whistled past my head, hit a steel upright behind me, ricocheted back and hit me on the back of the head, knocking me down a few steps…..I remember the game therefore for a couple of reasons…..I always think of the Aldershot 10-1 very fondly as a) there weren't many (1,281) of us in attendance b) we forget how good that team was & c) we got a decade or so of singing "You're so sh!t you must be Aldershot!". Happy days.
Appreciate you can't have every game though.
We now understand things a lot more.Remember I went to that game alone and stood in north bank. Can’t remember who shot but a shot whistled past my head, hit a steel upright behind me, ricocheted back and hit me on the back of the head, knocking me down a few steps…..I remember the game therefore for a couple of reasons…..
Has to be Wolves in 87 for me, the atmosphere was banging, 10,000 odd there but felt so many more, I miss nights like these.
Great game with 2 great teams and full of talented individuals.....never thought I'd be fondly reminiscing the days of league 2 football lolFreddie’s debut needs adding to the list - the start of all the amazing drama over the following 2 and a half years.
Newport County! Two great 4-2 wins after being 2-0 down missing from an otherwise great list.
I was living in Rye House at the time. A slightly uncomfortable train journey back to Liv St after that game!Has to be Wolves in 87 for me, the atmosphere was banging, 10,000 odd there but felt so many more, I miss nights like these.
Didn't the West Hame game get 96 votes?Thank you to the 224 voters who have taken part so far - your interest is much appreciated
We still have a couple of days left for anyone else to vote - or you can always change your vote. Like one or two have said, as fantastic as it was on the day that Sunderland match, which currently sits in sixth place, seemed to be the catalyst for a long downward spiral and so throws a doubt as to whether it really is an 'iconic' match choice.
Anyway, thought you might like to see the top ten to date sorted in order:
1. Man U 185
2. Newcastle 141
3. Liverpool (1979) 130
4. Bristol City 98
5. Spurs 97
6. Sunderland 74
7. Brum 68
8. Stevenage 56
9. Norwich 48
10. Brentwood 47
Just bubbling under are Col Ewe with 44 and Millwall with 42
Interestingly (well, to me) I have just five (including the top four) of the above top ten in my own choice
I'll let all know which matches in the end we use for the prints and how many etc
I agree. The Wolves game was fast, furious and pulsating. Paul Clark was absolutely brilliant that night. His never-say-die performance literally held Southend together at a time of relentless and incredible pressure by Wolves to get back into the game. Jim Stannard was also not far behind Clark in terms of his contribution to the Southend victory.Great game. A Ling header I recall. Superb.
I think it was the 1st year of a new thing called play offs. Wolves just missed automatic promotion & then lost to Aldershot (who were promoted) even though they were miles behind in the points total. I remember thinking that wasn't fair.
Didn't the West Hame game get 96 votes?
Agreed - that brum game was immense and full of vitriol towards the fat *******!Very hard choice
Between beating Fry’s Brum or Fergies United - it’s a bit of a cliche but atmosphere at those games were electric.
