A bit extreme, but to play devils advocate - if we played this EXACT way for the next 3 seasons and ended up in the Premier League, who would mind?...

Maybe about 3,000 in Colchester. Obviously I'm including their players, ex-players, managers, previous managers, staff and directors when rounding up to that collossal number.

I honestly would mind (& a lot of friends and family who aren't as regular in going to games these days feel exactly the same).

We may only be Southend United (I don't have aspirations that we are a PL team or even Barcelona) but what we don't tolerate for any extended length of time is "tactically direct long passing" footb... - I mean hoofball!!!

I think if we go up and we play long ball and get thumped every week Luggy will come in for some serious criticism but for the moment we are top and I dont think there is too much dissent. But there is a noticeable, almost disinterest from the fans in the ground. Very little singing, I was looking around people were on their phones or talking to the person next to them.
We simply dont play like we did when we had Eastwood, Gower, Maher, Guttridge etc. We're functional. Id love us to play like Swindon and I do think we can. We have Timlin, Hall, Martin,Harris, Dicko, all good footballers. I think a lot of the problem comes from the defence, they are coached to hoof it by all accounts.

Imagine the reaction if we'd actually lost today. I cannot for the life of me understand why true Southend fans wouldn't be happy.

Look at today's attendance though, goes very much against the "we'll have a higher average than last time we got promoted from L2" argument. Guess the Rotherham game & other recent disappointments helped people vote with their feet. This "style" of football will NOT add thousands to the gate (in my mind, as a "true Southend fan" there's only a couple of scenarios that will)...

My only worry is Sturrock will get bored of the negativity and if a tempting offer comes along he'll take it. He is paid to win football games at the end of the day.

Anybody started the Sturrock to Notts County thread yet? ;-)

Sturrock will soon be investigated under the trade descriptions act, impersonating football. For those that say that they are happy winning games, this style will not stand the test of time as the others are winning for fun!

Wiggy thus far we've done our share to date in terms of results. Others are winning as you say but we are still above them at the moment. And I'm confident now we won't dip alarmingly away from the mix.

....but we are playing stadium emptying, lucky winning rubbish that can't go on!

Haha

This thought does worry me slightly, if we were to go up, could this style (use that term loosely) we're currently employing actually work? Is Paul Sturrock willing/capable of changing?

How does a person impersonate football? You don't make any sense as usual.

....and another thing. The first 20 odd minutes of the second half was actually quite good because of the width supplied by an not quite fit Dave Martin. What does he do, take him off as far to entertaining and dangerous and subsequent interview afterwards says he's wasn't on his game, unbelievable negative manager that hates anyone that goes forward. Premiershite may be double the price but it is 3 times the entertainment of the crud that he serves up every home game!

You've answered your own conundrum there.

As usual the fence sitter turns up protecting this rubbish that we are served up every week. You know what i mean and tell me, were you entertained today that's if you could bother to get away from your keyboard?

My concern is that of we do get promoted, we're going to see an even more direct style of play. On the assumption that we don't suddenly find a whole load of cash that needs spending - we won't be able to compete in footballing terms with the majority of the opposition so will need to be even more reliant on the more direct style. Truth be told I'd rather be successful with the big boot than relegated playing pretty, but either way I don't see a short term increase in enjoyment watching Southend.

I really do not understand what isn't entertaining about playing football in the opponents half!

Do you really think that every pass is long? How can that actually be possible!

Season ticket holder, south upper and I was there. I love watching the Blues play, I get excited every home game. The football isn't the greatest but it's the football that's needed to get us out of this division, thus our position.

We did play some good passing football at times today. I was disappointed with Phillips and his apparent love for just pumping the ball anywhere. I will support the Blues through thin and thick, good football or bad.

So will i but i won't pretend that i,m actually happy watching the tripe. Watch what happens when these one shot a game wins turn into draws and losses, you'll soon rear your ugly head as always!

We have had a bit of a bad run last few weeks and I supported throughout.

Do you honestly think a 17 game unbeaten run was all luck?

1 shot a game?

12 shots for us and 10 for them I believe!

But if you mean 1 goal a game I'll let you off!

Top of the league, smashed some teams this season, a bit of bottle and fight, that's what does it for me!

Not only that we have played football on the floor and direct passing!

We have adapted depending on the situation!

Football fans are a confusing breed though!

The few who are completely odd still support the club I suppose so I will try to respect your opinion and views even though I think it's absolute tosh and reading most things you say confuse me!

But I'll try to accept your twisted views on most subjects! Especially as it amuses me/angers! An emotion I can't quite place my dictionary on!
