Home kit 2023/24 - New Shirts Revealed

Wrexham have just announced that they sold 8,600 next season shirts yesterday, first day of sale. Prior to the takeover their total shirt sales was 2,750. The power of new ownership and a customer oriented and successful club.
The international fanbase and interest stoked up by their owners probably helps in the shirt sales department...

they sold something like 25,000 in total last season - admittedly some were overseas sales but so what? Even Ryan Reynolds couldn't get one he told the BBC when they were on telly v Sheff Utd.

Why is there this disturbing and unhealthy obsession with yellow?

Because it was a part of our most successful spell in club history.

However for me the most important thing is developing a recognisable identity. I want something that is easily identifiable as Southend. Not some generic blue that could be Everton, Chelsea, Birmingham, Rangers, Leicester, Portsmouth, Ipswich, Chesterfield, Cardiff, Peterborough, Oldham, Eastleigh, Halifax, Wealdstone etc etc

The two distinctive kit attributes in my lifetime have been the navy or the yellow. Either instantly narrowed down the number of teams we could be, like a light/sky blue being Man City or Coventry, blue and white hoops being QPR, Sheffield Wednesday and Brighton being blue and white stripes, West Brom a darker blue and white stripes, Blackburn and Bristol Rovers being quarters, Tesco carrier bags being Col Ewe etc. It may not be unique but either would make us more distinctive. The kit should be identifiable other than by the sponsor’s name and logo.

But the double relegation custard splat was a monstrosity that should never be repeated.

If it's something uncommon you want, why not the 1980/81 Division Champion winning kit? White body, blue sleeves, blue shorts, blue socks. And a lovely beef and mustard hooped away shirt.

Combining individuality with heritage. Perfick!

I don't understand the dislike for navy. Just like yellow, it may not have been an SUFC colour from the very start, but it's now well known and distinctive. I don't know of many other professional teams that play in navy, there are certainly a lot more who play in royal blue. With the right kit (Macron notwithstanding) I think it can look quite classy.

I guess at the end of the day most people like the colours they associate with their formative/favourite SUFC years and it's hard to argue with that.

Maybe my memory is playing tricks but I don’t recall a yellow away kit pre Laing getting involved. I thought the yellow away kit was linked to them (plus having no bits of yellow with the royal blue on the home)
You may well be right but we've had many yellow away kits in recent years and the 'yellows' chant always sounds good.

Well one of us has the memory playing tricks on us! Cos I remember back in the 70's us having an all yellow away kit. I have distinct memories of an away game at Layer Road in the 76 / 77 season. 19th March 1977 Colin Morris grabbed a late winner wearing an all yellow strip.

Also on the 'Old Photos of Southend United' thread #2,249 a picture shows Peter Taylor and Jimmy Greaves dressed in a yellow Southend United Admiral (?) shirt complete with black chevrons across the chest (2012 - 2013 away shirt perhaps a nod to this?). Of course Spud and Greavesie were probably only playing in a charity / testimonial match so it may not be a genuine away shirt. But it rings a bell.

The Layer Road win however is still a strong memory of, for me, an early away triumph as a 15 year old. Celebratory Fish and Chips bought and eaten from a chippy near Sandon on the way home.

1981 was my first game so I stand corrected…:Thumbs up:

Agreed. We've had some stunners in the navy era, despite the fact that some were Nike templates. The 2014/15 L2 promotion home kit was great. The 2020/21 Hummel home kit was brilliant too. And my personal favourite, the 2011/12 home - navy shirt with white 'V', white shorts and white socks. That was a super smart look.

That Layer Rd win with Colin Morris getting the winner was my first away game, 76/77 as you say.

My second away game was , Elm Park 77/78 and he did the business again, this time with a header in another 1 nil win.

What a great spell he had with us.

How about this for a modern take on the beef & mustard away shirt? 🤔
