get out there and vote

So Barna, only you and people who agree with you get it eh?
Obviously the rest of us are all easily led and politically uneducated.
You are arrogant and a very bad loser.

but I do love you:blush:

In a lot of ways I agree but what this shows is the public are not happy with the way things are and are having a shy at the government - not just the government, labour as well. I fully accept it is a protest vote and I don't expect UKIP to get a single MP come GE time but you just watch the change of tone from labour and the tories on issues like immigration and europe. Bear in mind please that we are not all ex-BNP voters.
Right, enough ranting for one day - battle cruiser awaits!

Everybody over 18 (and it should be 16,IMO) is fully entitled to a vote, and their opinion.

I fully agree with the sentiments you express in your last post.

(PS, I hope you don't mind me expressing a bit of man love, either, like wot I feel for Freddy.
pps.I'm not a bad loser and anyway Labour didn't really lose)!

UKIP's vote wasn't exactly an earthquake,either.

Certainly the earth didn't move for me.

And labour have hardly taken the election by storm either. It's a very average gain in seats and just plain rubbish for a party supposedly in waiting to be the next government. At least Balls has had the decency to say that the general election is now a four party affair.

Indeed, Labour did pretty badly. 2% above the Tories and did not gain the key councils is pretty wowful. I was interested that the pundits said Swindon was a benchmark constituency. Every general election whoever wins Swindon is the same party as the overall winners. Well the Tories gained one seat from Labour. It's not what should be happening 12 months before a general election. A year on if the economic picture remains positive which I think it will be (there are a number of major building start ups in Southend) and unemplyment is low and growth high (unlike Socialist France which will be pointed out every second sentence) then the election is wide open.

A year ahead of a general election, that was a pretty poor showing by the main opposition party.

I think Ed Miliband, image wise, is becoming more unelectable by the day. Style shouldn't win out over substance (and how much of that he has is another question) but that is how it works these days. Labour won't dump him now, but they will in a year when they fail to gain a majority in parliament.

You both seem to be forgetting that it was the Tories and the Lib/Dems who lost seats heavily on Thursday. Not Labour.

With UKIP's emergence now ushering in an era of four party politics (for the time being at least) I don't think it's sensible to talk about "what should be happening" in terms of the old three party politics, either.

Remember that only once in the last 80 years or so has a political party returned to power immediately after losing the previous G/E (thanks Ted Heath).

I would agree however that next year's election is "wide open."

Labour's showing in London is very encouraging - the Tories will be gutted about losing Hammersmith as that was their flagship council. Not doing enough to win outright at a GE though and a hung parliament is very likely to be on the cards. If UKIP split the right vote but don't gain many MPs then Lib Dems are very likely to be king makers again.

Six percent down on the last council elections, 2012 i think. Also as i said the first opposition party in history to have fewer councillors than the governing party. Pretty poor if you ask me.

Labour won more council seats than the Tories on Thursday but only about a third if seats were up for election so physically impossible to make up too much ground.

I sent a text at about 3am on Friday to one particularly objectionable council leader, who was sweetness and light when trying to get air time and self publicity, but tended to put the phone down on you or leave the studio if his views were challenged. He was booted out in a particularly surprising and unceremonious fashion. The text contained one word.

"Karma"

He's not replied since. That's the power of the vote.

was it a bit of a balls-up ?

Farage was on TV having a pint in The Hoy and Helmet.

He'd better not have been anywhere near the quiz machine because that ****er was getting ready to cough.

The new manager of the Hoy was being trained up yesterday at the Railway Bell in South Woodford (my local)
By all accounts it kicked off in there when Nigel Farage went behind the bar. Not everyone in there was a supporter apparently!

I'd say this is correct but to be fair you don't need a crystal ball to come to this conclusion. It's all about which way Nick Clegg slithers - funny thing democracy!

Will be interesting to see if UKIP's share of vote goes up or not when the euro results come in. Just thinking some may have voted differently in council elections but went for the two finger salute for the euro's.

See UKIP have been getting in trouble again.Oh dear.

Also see that:-"the BBC's projected national share figure showed Ukip got less than the 23% it had in council elections last year. Moreover, the party does not control any local authorities."

I think you may be right. I think some will have quite liked the idea of the fox in the hen house analogy. They'll certainly ruffle a few feathers.
